Many o us think o wire when we think o cra ting our own jewelry (mysel included), but really, wire can actually be usedquite expressively in dimensional works o art that go beyondadornment. The collection o projects in Wired Up includesnot only a bracelet and a pendant but a couple o displaypieces, too. Have you ever considered not only the intrinsic

qualities o wire, but the correlating symbolic ones as well?Wire is strong, yet at the same time, exible. It begins straightand smooth, yet its shaped by orces that apply pressure toit. A single strand cannot do as much on its own as severalworking togethereach o ering a di erent direction.

All our o the projects collected or you here share some-thing similar in the processes that are used to create them.Whether its weaving, coiling or randomly winding, eacho ers an almost meditative action to working with wire. But, o

course, theres more or you to learn here than simply workingwith wire. Youll see that copper wire is easily blackened withliver o sul ur. Youll see how un it is to weave assorted paperand fber bits into a nest o wire. Youll create a vessel thatresembles actual bone, but is really simple PVC pipe andyoull turn a humble wood hanger into a piece that displaysphotos. I really love each o these projects and I hope youenjoy the process as much as the fnished pieces.

From the author:Crystal Neubauer created her talisman with a gorgeous wire basket centerpiece. She

ingeniously made the small basket by weaving steel wire and suspending an old mother-o -pearlcross, taken rom a rosary, inside it. Crystals talisman is based on verse 2 o Corinthians 4:7, But wehave this treasure in jars o clay to show that this all-surpassing power is rom God and not rom us.

Crystal explained it like this: In the Bible, the term jars o clay represents our human railties. The treasure inside the jars is God. I wanted to use the wire to represent the jar and to show thathaving God in my li e is where my strength comes rom. I then designed the top o the basket toresemble a crown o thorns.

In the example stepped out here, Ruth added a button-stack charm that was made by Liz Smithin place o the rosary cross used in the original piece.

3 Begin curling the spokes up toorm the general shape o thebasket. Take the piece o twistedwire and wrap it around thebase o one o the spokes.

4 Start to make the basket bywrapping the twisted wire 360degrees around each o thespokes, working in a spiralaround the entire piece, rombottom to top.

5 As you continue working aroundand begin to shape the sideso the basket, keep the spokesevenly spaced and your tensionconsistent. When your basketis the desired height, fnish bywrapping the wire one extra timearound one o the spokes.

1 Twist enough 24-gauge wire to create 48" (122cm)o loosely twisted wire. Cut fve pieces o 10"(27cm) 18-gauge wire. Also cut a 3" (8cm) pieceo 18-gauge wire. With the 10" (27cm) piecesstacked, fnd the center and wrap the 3" (8cm)piece around them to secure. Start the wrap with ahook at one end o the wrapping wire.

2 Wrap the wire about our times, and cut o theexcess wrapping wire. Use the pliers to really smashthe wrapping to hold it together tightly.

8 Trim the excess, i any. Trim theremaining spokes each to 2"(5cm). Starting with round-nosepliers, create a spiral on eachpiece. Switch to chain-nosepliers to coil each spiral downuntil it meets the basket.

9 Dip the basket and a 5 (13cm)piece o 20-gauge wire into livero sulphur to blacken it. Rinsewith vinegar and water and letdry. Use the piece o 5" (13cm)wire to create a rosary wrap onthe charm you wish to suspend

    rom the basket.

10 Wrap the end o the wire tothe eye loop hanger at thetop o the basket.

6 Trim the twisted wire with ush cutters. Choose twowires that are opposite one another. Bend one wirein toward the center, and then straight up. Bend theopposite wire toward the center and wrap it aroundthe frst wire.

7 Trim the wrapping wire. Form the frst wire into an eyeand wrap the excess around the base o the loopover the frst wrapping.

My scribble heart with wings represents my artists soul, ree and able to y. It can soar into theclouds or skim the edge o the ocean, wherever my dreams lead it. I think o it as my talisman. Ithangs in my studio, and as I work it reminds me I am allowing my heart to y ree through my art.

You can personalize your scribble heart by including symbols, abrics, quotes or anythingelse you eel describes who you are. Make your heart meaning ul to you. Then hang it in yourhome as a visible and potent representation o your artists heart.

4 I think the scribble heart looks better when its a littlesquished. Set the heart on a hard sur ace and pushagainst it with the palm o your hand to fatten itslightly.

5Form a pair o wings rom 16-gauge wire by ormin1 wing, wrapping the wire at the center and then

orming the second wing. Cut the wire rom thespool, leaving some excess or astening it to theheart.

1 Working rom the spool, orm alarge heart shape rom 16-gaugewire, starting and ending at the

6 Insert the excess wire rom the wings through thescribbles on the back o the heart, bending the wireto secure. I the wings arent securely attached, use19-gauge wire to attach the elements more snugly.

7 Tie 1 end o a abric strip to a wire on the heart.Thread the rest o the strip through and aroundthe heart. Tie the other end to another scribble tosecure. Repeat this process as o ten as desired. Besure to weave strips through the wire, as this createsdepth.

8 Tie 1 end o a skein o embroidery oss near thebase o your wings. Wrap the oss once around thetop wire, and then bring it down to the bottom wire.Wrap the bottom wire twice and then bring it upto the top wire again. Repeat this process, movingacross the entire length o the wing. Once youvewrapped hal the wing, start to wrap a little morehaphazardly. Continue until the entire wing hasbeen wrapped. Repeat this step with the secondwing.

9 Choose objects and sayings to include in the heartto personalize it and give it meaning. Include toolso your trade (like an old paintbrush), buttons orpretty ound objects youve collected. Attach theseitems with 1"2" (2.5cm5cm) pieces o 19-gaugewire bent into "U" shapes, or simply insert themthrough the scribbles (as was the case with mypaintbrush). From the author:Women (and sometimes men) rom various cultures wear pieces o jewelry that contain

prayers o di erent sorts. The containers or these prayers range rom Coptic snakeskin vialsto sterling silver boxes and tubes, and are used by both Christian and Muslim religions. Whatis contained in this jewelry varies just as much. Sometimes it is a prayer or the protection o achild, sometimes a section o the Koran or perhaps a plea or deliverance rom adversity.

    Some Like it Rough

I you can get an old hammer, you cantexture the wire completely. You can do this byturning the wire regularly but randomly whilehammering, and by hammering on a roughsur ace such as concrete or the side o an anvil.

    1 Cut 45" (114cm) o 18-gauge copper wire. Using an

old at- aced hammer, pound the wire to texture it.(An old hammer will leave more o an interestingtexture, as will the uneven sur ace o the side o youranvil.) File the ends o the wire.

2 Using a spray paint can, tightly wrap the wire

around it. 3 Using a jewelers saw and a Faux Bone blade (or

    pipe cutter), cut a 1" (4cm) piece o " (19mm)PVC pipe.

4 File the ends o the PVC tube square. Use the Faux

Bone orming tool (or the round side o a hal -roundfle) to smooth and bevel the inside o the pipesedges.

    5 Trace two 1" (3cm) circles onto 24-gauge copper

sheet. Using a cross-peen hammer, texture thecircles. Using a 116" (2mm) drill bit, drill a hole inthe center o each circle. Using a jewelers saw anda metal blade (or tin snips), cut out the disks romthe sheet. Place one disk into the largest hole in thedapping block and use a round- ace hammer toshape the disk.

    6 Cut a 4" (10cm) piece o 16-gauge copper wire.

Bend it into a U shape. Using a at- aced hammer, atten the bend.

    Lets Get This Straight

Heres a super trick or using paper as a guidewhile drawing a straight line around a cylinder.Bring the ends o the paper evenly together. When the paper lines up, draw your circle alongthe edge o the paper.

Use 19-gauge wire to hang the objects. You may

need to experiment with the wrapping to fnd thebest solution or each item. I used a trapeze-likesystem or the dice and a coil wrap or the dollarm. 13 Take the wire o the dowel, and snip the shortend o the wire to leave at least two rings.

14 Trim the long, straight end o the wire to the

length you want it to hang, then create a smallhook on the end. Create as many additionalphoto holders as you desire.

15 To create hangers or the objects, create a hook

at both ends o a length o wire, using round- orat-nose pliers depending on how sharp you

want the angle o the hook to be. 16 Another way to hang something is to drill a hole

in it, just large enough to accommodate thewire, insert the wire through the hole, and thenhammer the end o it at to spread it, making ittoo wide to come back through the hole. (Foldthe wire on each side o the object to hang.)Create a hook on the opposite end.
