ECHS Library Literacy Tip
How can you encourage your teen to read? Set an example! Let them see you reading for pleasure, and talk to them about what you are reading.
ECHS Library Book of the Month
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas: "Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right." Read the book, and then go see the movie!
Transportation News Corner We are requesting parent’s assistance to encourage students to walk single file facing traffic. Cross directly across road to bus stop. Look left, right, then left again for approaching traffic. “Be alert, don’t get hurt.” Do not throw objects or wear headphone devices when walking to the bus stop. No horseplay. Carry personal belongings in backpacks or sport bags. Make sure bus has stopped before leaving their seat. Take all
belongings with them. Exit in an orderly fashion without pushing or crowding. Hold handrail when walking down steps, don’t jump off. Walk at all times. When crossing the road, use the 15 feet rule. Make eye contact with the driver and watch for hand signal to cross. Stop and look both ways at the centerline, then continue crossing. Go directly to house; do not go to mailbox, etc. If you leave an object on the bus or drop it on the ground always check with the driver before retrieving it. We you and your family a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving break!

Parent and Family Engagement Family, school, and community engagement in education is a critical component in promoting college and career readiness so that students can successfully compete in today’s global society. Richland One has implemented a “Cluster Support Model” for parent and family engagement designed to ensure that school, parent, and community partnerships are integrated and aligned with each school’s mission and are an integral part of school reform. The Cluster Support Model is based on Joyce Epstein’s Framework of Six Types of Involvement which are listed below:
Each month we will highlight a Type of Involvement. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at Eau Claire High School. Thanks, Kimberly Brunson Kimberly Brunson Parent and Family Engagement Specialist Eau Claire High School 803-735-7600

RICHLAND ONE ANNOUNCES HURRICANE FLORENCE MAKEUP DAYS
Richland One has announced the days that students will make up instructional time they missed when schools were closed September 11-14 by order of the governor.
Gov. Henry McMaster ordered schools in Richland County and two dozen other South Carolina counties to close ahead of Hurricane Florence to help clear the roads and make preparations to accommodate residents of coastal counties who were being evacuated.
At tonight’s (September 25) meeting, the Richland One Board of School Commissioners approved October 12, December 21 and March 8 as makeup days. Each makeup day will be a half day for students and a full day for staff. The Board also approved a request from the district’s administrative team to waive the fourth missed day.
October 12 previously was designated as a student holiday/district professional development day; December 21 would have been the first day of Winter Break; and March 8 would have been a holiday for students and staff.
South Carolina school districts are required by state law to designate three makeup days in their academic calendars. Three missed days must be made up, but local school boards can vote to waive up to three days if schools are closed four to six days due to snow, extreme weather conditions or other disruptions. If schools are closed six to nine days for any of the same reasons, local school boards may request a waiver from the State Board of Education.
Richland One employees will receive information from the district regarding Hurricane Florence makeup days for employees.
