FEBRUARY 2015MT GRAVATT PL AZA EAT WELL, L IVE WELL FLYER

1. Where do your blueberries come from?

Our blueberries are grown in Wollongong, New South Wales.

2. What’s the secret to choosing a good punnet of blueberries?

The general rule is the darker their colour, the sweeter the taste.

3. What’s the best way to store them?

It’s best to refrigerate them in the container you bought them in. We recommend washing them right before you eat them. Any sooner, and the rinsing softens their skin and can cause them to spoil much sooner.

4. Finally, what’s your favourite way to eat blueberries?

In vanilla ice-cream (hey, all in moderation right!) or a fruit salad.

BERRY GOODNESS This month we chat to Peter and Joe from Crispy Carrot about the humble blueberry! Not only are blueberries packed full of antioxidants, but just a handful a day has proven to slow the ageing process, improve your memory and reduce your risk of diabetes.

Emily Visser is the loving mum of 20-month-old Max, a naturopath and the owner of Vitality Health Foods at Mt Gravatt Plaza. Emily and her husband Michael have owned the store for almost four years, although the store has been in Michael’s family for over 30 years. Emily says that she has wanted to be a part of the health food industry since she was a teenager battling chronic glandular fever and depression. “Western medicine and pharmaceuticals continued to let me down and after starting a healing journey with holistic and natural medicine I knew this was what I wanted to do.” While Emily admits that owning her own store can be stressful at times, the pros outweigh the cons. “I love the fact that we often get shown new and exciting products before consumers are relatively aware of them. I also love that I am constantly learning and growing with the market. Our customers often teach us so many new tricks and tips”.

04. ECOTAN COCONUT SUNSCREENWe all know how nourishing coconut can be for your skin, and now there is a coconut sunscreen. It is tinted for a beautiful glow, great for sensitive skin, offers UVA/UVB protection, it is water resistant, SPF30 and can be used on your face and body.

01. LILLY CHEWELLERYA beautiful local company that is a personal favourite of mine! They create stunning jewellery that keeps my toddler busy and amused. Their necklaces come in a wide range of colours and designs, and are BPA free and non-toxic. I love that your children can tug on them and that the safety clasp easily unlatches, instead of potentially choking you like other necklaces!

03. HIMALAYAN SALT LAMPSI always get loads of questions about these. They are great for asthma, colds and flu, sinus and have also been shown to aid in insomnia and depression. They are dim enough to have on whilst sleeping, and are safe as they never get very hot. Salt lamps make for a great gift, or are handy in a nursery as a feeding light.
