Jodar Farms was primarily a hobby farm until Aaron Rice took over operations after graduating from Colorado State University in 2010. Over the last two years, Jodar Farms has grown and developed a strong following and a reputation of high quality. The success of the farm is due to the passion, hard work and creativity of Aaron, his father, mother, brother, sister and girlfriend. A successful garden starts with the soil. At Fort Collins Nursery, we work closely with our soil providers and the Colorado State University Soils Lab to ensure that you fi nd what you need to build the best soil for your plants.

Fort Collins Nursery has been home-grown since 1932, when we began as little more than a roadside fruit stand. Today, we are an 11 acre garden center that grows and sells everything from perennials, trees, and shrubs to heirloom vegetables and annual fl owers. GROWING NEW FARMERSWho’s going to grow your food?

Demand for locally grown food at home, in restaurants and in schools is growing, and has generated a growing segment of market farmers—producers who grow and sell vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, dairy and other food products directly to consumers and retail customers. Many producers who want to fi ll this demand have limited agricultural business background and don’t yet understand how to manage their fi nancial and production risks.

The Building Farmers Program began in 2007 in Boulder County through Colorado State University Extension. The eight-week course is designed to help new, intermediate and experienced farmers assess their ability to start and maintain a new, more diversifi ed farm operation, or to expand and improve the management of an existing one. The program came to Larimer County in 2011 as a collaboration between Larimer County Extension and Be Local Northern Colorado.

The program offers weekly networking and an informal group meal, plus business planning, management and marketing classes presented by experienced local farmers, ranchers and agriculture professionals. Instructors cover topics such as production strategies, managing seasonal labor and diversifying production. The program also helps participants plan for and succeed in local markets, and provides access to producer networks for agricultural inputs, fi nancing, technical support and water resources. Participants who complete the program and present a business plan are eligible to apply for a mentorship with an experienced producer to gain in-depth production advice.

GROWING NEW BUSINESSSometimes it’s easier not to do it alone.

Rocky Mountain Salsa Company has been producing chunky traditional style salsa since 1991, based in Fort Collins but using kitchen facilities in the Denver area. In 2008, they decided to begin operating their own kitchen in Fort Collins. And today, Rocky Mountain Salsa’s kitchen serves as an incubator catering to small food production. Owners Amy and Gregg Lasley and their son Keegan do all their own salsa production and manage the very busy commissary.

Currently there are 25 businesses utilizing the Rocky Mountain Salsa kitchen. Many are new start-up businesses, and some are more established producers who are growing. Amy and Gregg are very committed to providing guidance and assistance to their tenants; they have lots to offer concerning health department regulations, maintaining product quality and assistance with the manufacturing process. In addition, Amy coordinates everyone’s participation at some of the area farmers markets.

Clients in the Rocky Mountain Salsa kitchen include gourmet bakers, manufacturers of salad dressings, varieties of pasta, BBQ, Asian & hot sauces, toffee, relishes & mustards, energy bars, granola, fl avored raisins & breakfast burritos. And recently a local aquaponics outfi t has begun processing locally raised fi sh. There’s more than salsa coming out of this kitchen!
