Eastern Washington Gateway Railroad Loco History EWG locomotive roster Updated 04/29/2015 (photos added by Sue Schmaltz 11/29/2015) Eastern Washington Gateway RR (EWG) began operations in the summer of 2007 with 3 ex MRL SD45’s – 375, 8924, and 8925. 1617 joined the roster in 2009 when EWG assumed operation of the Spokane County owned Geiger Spur. Currently, two active units, 8702 and 8319 are owned by Western Rail and are leased by EWG. They carry WRIX reporting marks. Eastern Washington Gateway RR (EWG) began operations in the summer of 2007 with 3 ex MRL SD45’s – 375, 8924, and 8925. 1617 joined the roster in 2009 when EWG assumed operation of the Spokane County owned Geiger Spur. Currently, two active units, 8702 and 8319 are owned by Western Rail and are leased by EWG. They carry WRIX reporting marks.

Units extensively used on EWG in the past

NIWX 375: SD45, built 01/1968. Builder # 33857, frame # 7993-54. Ordered by the Pennsylvania, but delivered as

Penn Central 6233. Served Conrail, then became CNW 6556, then NRE 6556, MRL 375, IMRL 375. Painted MRL blue. Retired April 2012 when FRA discovered a defective wheel. Sold to dealer Western Rail in Airway Heights WA. Scrapped at Airway Heights in June 2013.

NIWX 8924: SD45, built 09/1971 as SCL 2024. Builder # 37715, frame # 5784-1 Became SBD 8924, CSXT 8924,

VMV 8924, MRL 8924, IMRL 8924. Assigned MRL number 382 but never renumbered. SBD gray. Last active SD45 on EWG when retired 8/8/2012 and sold to Western Rail. Held for possible sale. 8924 left Cheney eastbound in early January 2015 as "VLIX 8924". VLIX is the reporting mark for "Vintage Locomotives, Inc". of Pearland, Texas. Rumor was that it was going to the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum in North Judson Indiana, but this is not yet confirmed.

NIWX 8925: SD45, built 09/1971 as SCL 2025. Builder # 37716, frame # 5784-2 Became SBD 8925, CSXT 8925,

VMV 8925, MRL 8925, IMRL 8925. Assigned MRL number 383 but never renumbered. SBD gray. Retired late 2010 due to turbo clutch failure and traded to Western Rail for 2891. Scrapped at Airway Heights in 2012. All 3 SD45s were transferred to the I&M Rail Link (IMRL) in 1997. On July 31, 2002, the IMRL's operations were taken over by the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern Railroad. The 3 SD45s returned to MRLwhere they apparently saw periods of lease service with BNSF before being placed in storage.

NIWX 1617: GP7, built 12/1953 as CB&Q 261, EMD b/n 18977, a steam generator equipped passenger unit initially

assigned to Chicago IL commuter service where it would have replaced steam power. Became BN 1617 after the 3/2/1970 BN merger. Rebuilt by BN in the 1970s. Reconfigured for short hood forward operation and short hood chopped Sold about 1982 to dealer Great Western in Colorado, Transferred to N-C-O Division (Lakeview, OR) in 1986 and then sold to the Lake County Railroad in 1996. Traded to dealer Western Rail Inc in Airway Heights WA. Leased for several months to St. Maries River Railroad, Plummer, ID, in late 2006. Returned to Western Rail and assigned as power for the Geiger Spur on 11/8/2007. Sold to NIWX 01/2009 when Geiger spur operation changed to EWG. Retired by EWG and sold January 2015 to “Everywhere West”, a dealer owned by Scott Nauer. Shipped to Blackwell OK 1/2015.

NIWX 2891: SD40T-2R, “tunnel motor” built: Jul 1975. Builder # 756046-7. Delivered to D&RGW as 5362. Became

UP 4049, then 8619, and finally 2891. Painted UP yellow. Acquired by dealer Western Rail Inc at a UP auction. Purchased by NIWX late 2010 using 8925 for trade-in credit Re-acquired by Western Rail from NIWX in 2014 and used occasionally by EWG in 2014 and 2015. Sold by Western Rail and shipped out on 4/17/2015. WRIX 3000: SD40-2 ex USRC 3000, exx UP 3164, built Feb 1972, Builder number 7334-42 Painted in a yellow and brown scheme that is reminiscent of UP's paint scheme from the mid and late 1930s. Retired by UP on 24 January 2008 and sold to Larrys Truck Electric; lettered first as LTEX 3000, then Utah Southern Railroad 3000. Shipped from LTE's facility in MacDonald, Ohio, on September 30, 2008 and delivered by UP to Utah Southern at Iron Springs UT on October 16, 2008. Sold to dealer Western Rail Inc in 2011. numbered MRL 210 and renumbered to 260 when rebuilt to SD40-2XR 08/1991. I understand that 260 recently (summer 2013) acquired a truck from the 375, sold to MRL by Western Rail.
