Please come along and support our school at our next P&C meeting. First Bronze and Silver Awards Tristan, Noah, Sam W, Sam J, Daley, Jasper, Koko and Kit have received their Bronze awards. Jasper had achieved 20 merits this year which makes him our first Silver recipient. Many children have achieved their Bronze but still need to bring in their cards. If the merit cards are lost let me know, as I have kept a record of all awards and your child will be awarded their Bronze. Our Debating Team Our first debate was last Thursday when Hunter, Sam W and Jasper debated Moorland PS. The topic was that Humans have Destroyed our Environment on Earth and we were the affirmative. Throughout the week our students had worked very hard researching the topic and writing and practicing their speeches, and their effort paid off. Every member of our team delivered their speech in a very convincing manner and totally annihilated our opposing team. This week’s debate is against Mount George PS and the topic is that All Zoos Should be Closed. Kit is our 1st speaker, Koko our 2nd speaker and Tristan is our 3rd speaker. The students have researched the topic and are in the process of writing and practicing our speeches. On Tuesday 13th June, two students from stage 2 and stage 3 will represent our school at the Manning Small Schools Multicultural Public Speaking Competition at Taree PS. This week I will select our representatives which will provide the students with a week to perfect their speeches. Biggest Morning Tea Last Thursday our students enjoyed having morning tea with our local community. The tables were laden with mouth watering delights and our students shone, as they displayed their very best manners and social skills. I was complimented many, many times on our children's’ beautiful manners and behaviour. Upper Lansdowne students are exceptional! P&C Meeting Our next P&C meeting is next Wednesday 6th June at 2.00pm.

Healthy Harold Our students were delighted to visit Harold in the Life Education van. We would like to thank the Upper Lansdowne Hall committee for allowing us to park the van at the hall and providing us with electricity. An Ex-student Returns Last Friday Stephanie Jordan (nee Vernon) visited us to “walk down memory lane”. Stephanie attended Upper Lansdowne PS in 1959 as a 7 year old with her twin sisters. She told our students about why and how her family moved to Upper Lansdowne. Originally her parents and 4 older brothers lived in Yugoslavia and fled to Australia as refugees in 1952. Stephanie told the students about the hardships and poverty her family endured but their life improved when her father managed to bring the family to Upper Lansdowne. They lived on a dairy farm and remembers helping in the dairy sheds but unfortunately she couldn’t remember where the farm was. Stephanie had one photo of her school days which shows Stephanie sitting in her classroom which is very near my Principal’s desk. Totally amazing!! Thank you Stephanie for taking the time to visit us and share your story. External Validation Upper Lansdowne PS has been selected to participate in this year’s External Validation. External validation provides an opportunity for schools to discuss their judgements about the school’s practice – and the evidence that underpins them – with a panel of peers. Each year approximately 20% of schools are selected as representative samples of NSW schools. Once during a five-year cycle, all schools undergo an external validation of the evidence of their assessment of their progress. I will be meeting with a panel to discuss the submission I am required to prepare which outlines our progress. I would like all parents to take this opportunity to share your opinions on our school’s learning, teaching and leadership. In the next newsletter I will attach a survey which will provide you with this opportunity. Also at the P&C meeting I will briefly outline the process and seek your opinions. So mark Wednesday June 6th 2.00pm in your diaries to come along and share your thoughts. External Validation is a time consuming process and requires my attendance at meetings and time to collect and annotate evidence. This means I will need to take a few “office days” to achieve this. SENA Testing Last Friday Mrs Powell commenced SENA testing with the students for our records and to align with the new mathematics progressions.

Mrs Powell hard at work last Thursday evening 6.30pm at Taree PS.

What Makes ULPS Special It’s moments like last Thursday’s Biggest Morning tea and debating experiences plus our Friday’s “jam” session. Tristan, Kit, Koko and Jasper had enjoyed putting together an arrangement of tunes to share with the other students and parents who stayed for “play and stay”. Yes, ULPS is awesome!!! Visiting Support Person Last Wednesday Fiona visited Mrs Powell’s class and told her what an amazing job she was doing. Fiona also commented on how lovely Mrs Powell’s visual classroom was. Her students were all engaged, supportive of each other, well mannered and enjoying learning. Yes it is moments like this that reinforce our students and staff’s awesomeness!
