FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKJesus is risen from the dead! When Mary Magdalene saw the empty tomb she ran and told the disciples, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him (John 20:2).” She saw the empty tomb, but didn’t yet understand what was going on. Peter and John saw the empty tomb, and didn’t understand. In fact the gospel of John says, “they returned home” (John 20:10). Mary stayed there and wept, and it was then that Jesus appeared to her. It’s easy for us to not fully understand the Resurrection. This is the central mystery of our faith. The disciples who were closest to Jesus in his life didn’t fully understand it. To be raised from the dead is completely inexplicable. This is a special Easter Sunday for us. Jesus is still risen from the dead even if we are still confined to our homes. Christ’s Resurrection is a new birth. It is his being born again never to die. In our own lives we have been born again in baptism. We have been raised from the dead. St. Basil reminds us that we need to make a break from our former way of life in order to truly be raised to new life. He says that in order for our new life to begin, we need to put an end to the former one. St. Basil states, “When runners reach the turning point on a racecourse, they have to pause briefly before they can go back in the opposite direction. So also when we wish to reverse the direction of our lives there must be a pause, or a death, to mark the end of one life and the beginning of another.”Now that Lent is over, and we celebrate the joy of the Resurrection, let’s put to death that old former way of living! We hear on the news that life might not ever be exactly the same after the stay-at-home order is lifted. We as Christians know that there’s joy in that prospect. We know that the life we experience at Easter can truly be a new life for us. When our lives are made new in Jesus, there is no loss at the death of a former, sinful way of life. There is only joy and peace.I know how much our RCIA catechumens and candidates desire their sacraments. We are united with you in prayer, and long to see the day when you desire for full union with the Catholic Church is fulfilled. Baptism is so closely related to the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday with the renewal of baptismal promises and sprinkling with holy water. We really can’t think of one without the other. I hope you at home can renew you baptismal promises with your family members and reclaim your new life in Christ. To rise from the dead with Jesus means to leave a former way of life behind. To mark a turning point in our lives. This Easter is a turning point for us. Life for us now can never be the same. May the Risen Lord Jesus give you his joy and peace in this Easter Season! In the Risen Christ Jesus, Fr. Hartge

CATECHISM CORNER989 We firmly believe, and hence we hope that, just as Christ is truly risen from the dead and lives for ever, so after death the righteous will live for ever with the risen Christ and he will raise them up on the last day. Our resurrection, like his own, will be the work of the Most Holy Trinity: If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit who dwells in you.1002 Christ will raise us up «on the last day»; but it is also true that, in a certain way, we have already risen with Christ. For, by virtue of the Holy Spirit, Christian life is already now on earth a participation in the death and Resurrection of Christ: And you were buried with him in Baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead . . . . If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.1226 From the very day of Pentecost the Church has celebrated and administered holy Baptism. Indeed St. Peter declares to the crowd astounded by his preaching: «Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.» The apostles and their collaborators offer Baptism to anyone who believed in Jesus: Jews, the God-fearing, pagans. Always, Baptism is seen as connected with faith: «Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household,» St. Paul declared to his jailer in Philippi. And the narrative continues, the jailer “was baptized at once, with all his family.”1228 Hence Baptism is a bath of water in which the «imperishable seed» of the Word of God produces its life-giving effect. St. Augustine says of Baptism: “The word is brought to the material element, and it becomes a sacrament.”

DEATHS: Our love, prayers, and sympathy to the families of Vic Pacino, Rosemary “Tosie” Allen and Msgr. Carl Clagett. We are sorry for their loss. May Jesus bless the deceased with eternal warmth, everlasting life, and may they rest in the arms of the Risen Savior.
