Weekly Calendar Rector’s Corner

"Come, let us sing to the Lord and shout with joy to the Rock that saves us."

Thus begins the Invitatory to the Liturgy of the Hours, the daily prayer of the Church, taken from Psalm 95. On Easter Sunday we find hope in the Resurrection of our Lord. Having taken on our full human condition, Jesus lifts up our humanity,

redeeming it and calling us to become like Him so to have a share in His divinity. He bridges the gap between our sin and God’s mercy. This is the day we say to Christ, "Claim us once more as your own!" We acknowledge our need for His love to rule all within us, and thus open our hearts to the coming of the Holy Spirit.

In the weeks ahead, anticipating Pentecost, I will be sharing brief reflections on the fruits of the Spirit, from Galatians 5:22-26. These are provided in contrast to life in the flesh, and are produced by docility to the Spirit. On this Resurrection Day we celebrate not only Christ's victory over death, but also the possibility of life according to the law of love. Love—divine charity— seeks the good of the other and leaves little room for the disordered love of self. Divine charity calls us to become the best version of ourselves. In coopera-tion with the Holy Spirit we learn to overcome the desires of the flesh and its relentless self-interest. We learn to allow God’s love to reign over all: this is “life in the Spirit.” All the virtues are ordered to charity, and it is only in acknowledgment of our need for God that we can become fitting dwelling places for Trinitarian love, temples of the Holy Spirit.

“The whole weight of the Law and its myriad commandments are not so much eradicated by evangelical grace as they are subsumed under the single heading of love, that we love our neighbor as ourselves. For whoever loves his neighbor and does good to him and not evil fulfills the entire Law. If love is taken out of the equation, villainy prevails in society and people go on the attack and finally are consumed by one another. But you, brothers, must live by the law of the Spirit so that you do not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Jerome, trans. Andrew Cain, Commentary on Galatians)

The Catechism says the following as well: “By charity, we love God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves for love of God. Charity, the form of all the virtues, ‘binds everything together in perfect harmony’ (Col 3:14)” (CCC 1844). Thus, the first fruit of the Spirit is love—charity. Easter Sunday

Padre Tim

Easter Sunday: In the first reading we hear Peter proclaiming the Good News of Jesus risen from the dead and that in his lifetime, Jesus went about doing good, healing the sick and that God was with him! As disciples of Jesus, filled with grace through his resurrection, we too are called to this mission. What good are we called to do this week? Who are those, sick in mind, body or spirit that we might minister to this week? How can we bring the presence of God to others this week?
