The PasTor’s Desk

Join us for our annual celebration of CINCO

DE MAYO on Saturday, May 4, at the Carnevale Center.

Tickets are available in the Parish Office. Doors open at 6:30 PM.

If you’ve purchased anything significant lately, you were probably offered an extended warranty. You know the deal, if you lay out extra cash, you can purchase long-term care for your computer, iPod, cell phone or even your automobile. For just a few extra bucks you can have a little peace of mind and a guarantee that you will be protected. For the most part, we like those kinds of guarantees. We like to know that if anything goes wrong, we can return the product for a nice, shiny new one! Life may not come with any guarantees but purchases sure do!

Well, sisters and brothers, we are not only about purchases, we are about life and living life to its fullest. It is true that there are no guarantees and certainly no returns. Life is wonderful and tragic, happy and sad, adventurous and boring all at the same time. You take what you get and do the best you can. No guarantees, no returns, no shiny new replacements. Because of that we must care for and respect life at every turn and on this Good Shepherd Sunday we hear that first and foremost we are respected, loved and cared for by God.

To be cared for by God is a wonderful and comforting thing. But to be cared for by God means that we must care for one another. We must always be willing to forgive one another. We must love all people. We must always be inclusive. We must always be non-violent. We must always recognize the power of the Holy Spirit in all people. That really is what it means to respect life. Too often we define respect for life in narrow terms. We are willing to go to the sword to protect the unborn, and that is fine, but it is only the beginning. Respecting life may begin with the unborn, but it does not end with the unborn.

God has given us eternal life. It does not happen after we die, it is ours right this very moment and for all of our lives. We have been given eternal life and that means every life has meaning and every life is sacred. That includes the unborn, it includes people who work in abortion clinics, it includes victims of violence, it includes the perpetrator of violence and it includes the sick, the elderly, the poor and the lonely. Every life has meaning and every life is sa-cred. Now, that does not mean we are sinless and blameless. It simply means all our lives have meaning, we are all shepherded by Jesus Christ and every human life must be respected no matter what you or I or society might think of that human life.

We have been made a light to the nations and a means of salvation, so we must be totally taken up with our world. Our response to that call must be one of total immersion in the goodness of our world so as to challenge the evils of our world. We must not place the economic gain of a few above the common good of all people on earth. We must not ignore the interconnection of all processes and we must not ignore the well-being of future generations. We must be converted from a consumerist lifestyle, address poverty, end war,

shun violence, promote education, endorse a just wage, uphold justice and pursue peace at all costs. These are all part of respecting life, having eternal life and being in the flock of the Good Shepherd.

As we continue the great celebration of Easter for the next five weeks, all of you will be in our prayers! Thanks for a great week!

Live music by Mariachi, Latin-American Dances, Latino food and much more.

GIFT - Spring Semester

GIFT Class I - The Book of Acts Instructor: Fr. Charles Parr, Ph.D.Tuesdays: April 23, 30, May 7, 14 from 9:30 to 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Parish. The Book of the Acts of the Apostles is the largest of all the New Testament texts and was written by the same author as the Gospel of Luke. This narrative tells the amazing story of how the Church grew from a small sect of Jewish-Christians in and around Jeru-salem and spread throughout the ancient world. The Book of Acts is always read during the Easter season and is a story that speaks to the power of the Holy Spirit and how the Third Person of the Trinity enabled ordinary people to do extraordinary things. This class will examine and discuss Acts in its historical, cultural and theological significance. Please bring a complete Bible.

Inquiries will always be attended to and handled confidentially. This ministry is provided on a no-fee basis.

GIFT Retreat Day - And They Were All Filled With the Holy Spirit...Saturday, May 18 - 9:00 AM - 12:00 NoonOur Lady of the Magnificat - KinnelonFacilitated by Msgr. Thomas Nydeggar and Deacon Andy Golden

Join us on the beautiful campus of Our Lady of the Magnificat on the eve of Pentecost Sunday as our GIFT retreat this year will focus on answering three questions: Who is the Holy Spirit? What does the Holy Spirit do? and How can I be filled with the Spirit? Reflections will include biblical references to the Holy Spirit in both the Old and New Testaments, the role the Holy Spirit in the history of our Church, and how we may experience the power of the Holy Spirit. Additional reflections will address the ability of the Holy Spirit to change and influence our lives. Please join us for a wonderful day of prayer and reflection on the day before the great feast of Pentecost which celebrates the day those who gathered in the Upper Room were filled with the Holy Spirit and changed the world.

A Taste of Silence ExperienceExperience Centering Prayer

Tuesday, April 30, 7:00 PM, Carnevale Center, Room 201

Life is increasingly hectic. Just when we think that the pace of life has reached its maximum, it speeds up some

more. There are only 24 hours in each day, but the demands on our time seem to increase continuously. We risk burn-out, estrangement from our loved ones and professional collapse.

How can we hold things together? In Psalm 46:10, we hear the words, Be still and know that I am God. When we hear these words, there is a quiet, powerful stirring in our innermost beings and in our minds we whisper Yes, this is what I want. But, how do I do it?

St. John of the Cross said that God’s first language is silence; in Centering Prayer we learn this language, we learn to open to God’s gift of contemplative prayer.

Therese M. Saulnier will present this experience. Theresa earned a Master of Arts degree in Theology with a concentra-tion in spirituality from Fordham.

Come and learn the language of silence and be open to God’s will for our lives. To register, or if you have questions, call Barbara Heap at 973.838.4617.

There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens -Ecclesiastes 3:1

Make it your time to work through the sadness, worries, oppressions, fears, loneliness or whatever is weighing you down.

Sickness, loss of income, death of a loved one,

family issues and many other life struggles can

weigh us down. Call for a Stephen

Minister today who will listen in Christian love.

Daily Readings for the Week

Sunday Readings

First Reading: Acts 13:14, 43-52—Paul and Barnabas addressed many people, and large crowds gathered to hear them. Some of the Jews became jealous and argued with whatever Paul said. But Paul and Barnabas continued preaching their message of salvation and everlasting life, until they were eventually forced to leave the town.

Second Reading: Revelation 7:9, 14b-17—John saw a vision of many people surrounding a throne and the Lamb. One of the elders told him these were the people who had survived great periods of trial, but maintained strong faith in God. Now they would receive eternal protection and comfort from God as reward for their loyalty.

Gospel: John 10:27-30—Jesus states that his sheep know his voice and follow him, and will receive eternal life. Jesus also says that no one can snatch his followers away, because God is greater than anyone who might try and Jesus is one with God.
