We will never know why Siman Peter andsix of his companions - all disciples ofJesus - went all night fishing. Were they
so confused by all that had happened that theythought they had better try and "get back tonormal"?Weretheyunsure of the firsttwo appearancesof Jesus after hisdeath? Was it allreal? Or were theyjust plain hungry?
Whatever thereason, it wasa fruitless night:they went out andgot into the boatbut caught nothingthat night.
But there was aprovidential planbehind their lack ofsuccess. The RisenLord was going to give them an unforgettablelesson about growth in faith.
At first light Jesus appeared on the shore callingto them and asking about their catch; when theseven fishermen did make a massive haul (153 bigfish) recognition dawned. The disciple Jesus lovedwas the first to recognise him: It is the Lord. Loveleads to recognition; love and faith are intrinsicallylinked in the Christian experience. The impetuousPeter leapt into the water to come to Jesusimmediately: faith and love lead to action.
Some of the large number of fish providedbreakfast, prepared by Jesus himself. But theyalso symbolized the growth in faith: these samedisciples had been told they would be 'fishersof men'. Faith grows in our hearts but also inour communities; indeed in the Second Readingtoday we get a hintofthe spread offaith when the
Easter Faith
prophet looks forward to hearing every creature inheaven and on earth and under the earth and in thesea all praising the Lamb of God.
The Risen Jesus had something else in mind thatmorning. He took Simon Peter on another stage
of his journey offaith - and love. The dialoguebetween Jesus andPeter is echoed inthe hearts of allwho have everlet Jesus down. Itis not a dialogueof reproach forinfidelity, but adialogue of loveand responsibility.
It would bespiritual arroganceto imagine thatour faith is anystronger than that
of Simon Peter - or of the other six in the boat!We all share a history of infidelity, one way orother. Yet, equally, when we encounter the RisenJesus there is no reproach: we share a history ofrepentance and we echo Peter's confession Yes,Lord, you know I love you. Our faith grows throughsuch an encounter andwe can move forward withnew and more serious responsibilities for the faithof the Church.
We can hardly turn away from today's Gospelwithout a question or two. Do I keep my faithto myself as a sort of private, secret, garden-enclosed? Do I feed Christ's little ones (his lambs)?Do I invite colleagues, relations and friends (hissheep) to breakfast with the Lord?
Such questions are a way of dealing with thestrong invitation of Jesus at the end of today'sGospel: Follow me.

Just a thought
PREFACE What is the difference between a Preface and a Foreword to a book? The Foreword is written by someone other than the author. So, an author often tries to get a distinguished person to write the Foreword. To publish a book with a Foreword by Pope Francis would be quite a coup! A Preface on the other hand is written by the author of the work. In the Preface the author explains the purpose, prospective readership and scope of the book; it is a sort of introduction so that the reader has some idea of what to expect. All our Eucharistic Prayers come with a Preface and in the Easter season there are five special Easter Prefaces. Each of these Prefaces highlights a certain aspect of the mystery of Christ’s Resurrection. Easter Preface I praises Christ as the true Passover Lamb whose death has destroyed death. Easter Preface II proclaims that Christ is the new life in whose death we have become children of light. Easter Preface III acknowledges Christ as the great priest who makes in-tercession for us before the face of God. Easter Preface IV portrays Christ as the founder of a new age in whom the world is renewed and humanity restored, a cosmic vision. Easter Preface V declares Christ the priest, the altar and the lamb of sac-rifice. The Prefaces of Easter are a mini commentary on the Feast of Feasts and they repay pondering over and praying in the light of the Resurrection. Fr Sean Wales, C.Ss.R.
