Physics classes have been studying one dimensional kinematics—focusing on calculating velocity, acceleration, displacement, and determining the difference between scalars and vectors. Students analyzed graphs of motion to determine velocity and acceleration from a graph. Currently, they are studying free fall and constant acceleration. After a week-long building compe-tition for an apparatus that would hold an egg and keep it from breaking, the students dropped the apparatus and egg from the football field bleachers.

AP Physics classes recently prepared and tested their new Kinematics Buggies!

Livestock Class at East Valley High School

East Valley has a new class—Livestock Production and Management. This class falls into the category of Agriculture Education which includes a three component model for instruction: Classroom/Laboratory instruction, Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE), and FFA activities. In our class we just completed our first unit of study: Goats: dairy, meat, and fiber. Students learned about the different breeds and uses of goats. We also studied the digestive system, proper nutrition, wellness issues, and how to judge showmanship and market animals. The last day of the unit consisted of a hands on lab with live goats! The students were able to put into practice the concepts they learned in the classroom. Some students will pursue being a part of our FFA Livestock Judging Team and will compete at the district level, with hopes of making it to state competition this May.

East Valley High School Students Support “Lock Box/TakeBack Event”

Several high school students and staff volunteered at the East Valley Lock Box/Take Back event held October 27. East Valley

Community Coalition in partnership with the CHAS Health Clinic, Spokane County Health District, and the Spokane County

Sheriff Department took in pounds of unused prescription and over-the-counter medication and provided over 100 free lock boxes

to community members. Students also participated in The Red Ribbon Campaign and wore Red Ribbons to present a unified and

visible commitment towards the creation of a Drug-Free America.

There were 15 students who applied for the Greenhand FFA Degree, and 13 were in attendance at our first Greenhand Ceremony. Students had to demonstrate their knowledge and get signed off in the following areas: FFA Motto, Creed, Mission Statement, Jacket, and Emblem. Students also had to have a sufficient plan for a supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) and know the history of FFA, dating back to 1928. Our students worked hard for three months to achieve this first of four degrees that can be earned in FFA. In addition to earning a certificate, each member earned their Bronze Greenhand Pin that can be worn on their FFA jacket. As an advisor, I am so proud of these students and I am grateful for the support of their families and our school district.

Last summer, 42 brave and adventurous Knights traveled to Europe to see and experience firsthand the places they have been learning about in class. Students and parents traveled to Italy, France, and Spain to discover the history and culture of each country and to practice speaking the languages they have learned at EVHS. They were an interesting and attentive group of travelers who managed to have a lot of fun along the way!

The EV World Languages Department packed their bags to attend the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Conference held November 16-19 in New Orleans. The annual conference offered over 800 educational sessions covering a wide spectrum of languages with over 7,000 attendees. The conference featured professional development for language educators of all languages, focusing on new trends and research based practices meeting the needs of language professionals. EV World Languages Department had the opportunity to collaborate and learn from internationally recognized language educators.

We had two teams compete at FFA Subdistricts. The Agricultural Issues team, (Abigail Willey, Dakota Hanson, Kaylee Coburn, Megan Walsh, and Gwendolyn Skeen), debated the Reintroduction of Grizzley Bears in the Northern Cascades. They wrote and memorized a script, produced a slide presentation and are now working on a portfolio for District competition January 30. Gwendolyn and Dakota are also competing in Employability Issues and are qualified for District competition.

FBLA Attends Annual Teddy Bear Toss!

The Spokane Chiefs recently hosted their annual Teddy Bear Toss to raise money for the Spokesman-Review Christmas Fund. Their goal was to raise $525,000 to pay for food, toys, and books for needy families. After the Chiefs Hockey Team scored their first goal, teddy bears are tossed from the stands down to the ice rink. Volunteers picked up all the toys, which were collected into five trucks. Volunteers from five high schools helped carry off all the toys and count them. When the hard work was done, everyone gathered around to celebrate. A total of 7,655 bears were collected—breaking the record. This is a wonderful way to spread the holiday spirit!

Five Reasons to Take MicroSoft Certification Class 1. Receive Industry Recognized Certifications in Word, PowerPoint, Excel 2. Receive Free College Credit 3. Looks Great on Resume 4. Required by Many Four-Year Universities 5. Your Teachers and Classmates Will Love You! East Valley High School students in grades 9-12 are enrolled in MicroSoft Certification classes and are working to fulfill industry recognized certifications in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Students receive certification with a score of 700/1000. If a student scores at least 80% (800/1000), they can qualify for free articulated community college credit. Our goal is for students to score

900/1000. Certiport is the certification company we use and they also offer other certifications. Currently, seven students are certified in Word: Ben Donohue, Illya Kononykhin, Marcos Marroquin, Rodney McGee, Tanner O’Brien, Ellie Syverson, and Leah Syverson. The overall goal is to get certified in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel within the semester. Congratulations to these early achievers! These tests are not easy, but students persevere and feel a great sense of accomplishment when they pass. We are certain many more will reach the standard.

“Amber!” my dad yelled at me.

“Coming!” I shouted back.

That day my dad and I were leaving for our annual camping trip. Every year, during the second week of summer, we went on a week-long camping trip. We had loaded the cooler full of food, our camping bags, sleeping bags, books, and other supplies into his big, black truck but I had forgot to grab my toiletries bag on the way out the door.

I rushed to the front passenger side and hopped in. I grinned widely at my dad as he started the truck and pulled out of the driveway. I was a 15-year-old girl at the time, living with my dad in a small,

AP Government

Lori Merkel, Teacher

AP Government students were assigned a project compiling the President’s advisors and cabinet, key legislative players, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Titled the “Who’s Who” projects, students were highly creative. Alyssa Whittingham made Mrs. Merkel a sweatshirt and Tyler Strebeck used his Computer Science class and did some coding, creating a program written in “C”. Students (and parents) can access to test their knowledge of “Who’s Who” in the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government. A great example of cross-curricular application, Tyler applied knowledge from two classes to produce a lasting and impressive product. Also, an example of how fortunate we are at EVHS to have such an amazing program that affords the opportunities for our students to show their knowledge beyond one particular class. Check out your knowledge of “Who’s Who” in government at: https://onlinegdb.com/HygfP73yE. Here you will see the actual code as well as have the

ability to run the program to test your knowledge.
