Review of February Meeting Minutes

East Local Valuing People Group - March 2014 Minutes Page 3

There was a discussion about having two versions of the minutes. Some members thought that there should be a easy read version and a non easy read version

John Spedding commented that there should be a record of the important things that were discussed at the meeting and people should know exactly what happened at the meeting.

The group would like more detail in the minutes

Cath White mentioned that at the Partnership Board Away Day a member from the Self Advocacy group felt that there should be a easy read and non easy read version of meeting minutes.

Tom Moore said that the resources and time available to write up two versions of the minutes needs to be looked at.

Cath White asked the group to vote on how they would like the minutes to be presented. The options were:

Joyce Smith said that if she misses a meeting then she does not know what happened at the previous meeting. She would like to know a bit more and have more text. However she felt that it was really good and in a accessible format for many people

• Easy Read version • Non Easy Read Version • Easy Read with more detail • Two separate versions – easy read and non easy read

The group decided on having the minutes as a easy read format but to have a added section with more detail.

Now Future

Partnership Board Away Day

East Local Valuing People Group - February 2014 Minutes Page 5

Debbie Robinson from a company called Kaleidoscope Social Enterprise helped run the Away Day. She asked to think about the Partnership Board now and in the future.

At the Partnership Board Away Day it was decided that there will be a Partnership Board meeting in April and May but then the meetings will be every other month

Debbie talked about:

Self Assessment

Framework Winterbourne View

Our achievements

over the last 12 years

Have we got the right people as

members?

How often should the Partnership

Board and Valuing People Groups

meet?

Groups Comments about the Partnership Board Away Day

East Local Valuing People Group - February 2014 Minutes Page 6

A decision was not made about how often the Valuing People groups should meet. Somebody suggested to have 11 Valuing People groups which would be located according to the 11 district and borough councils in Surrey. Or to have them around the Clinical Commissioning Group areas.

Jen Fookes said that she really enjoyed the Partnership Board Away Day. The feedback given by parent carers was listened too.

People with learning disabilities were listened too. The members felt that district and borough councils should attend and also provider organisations that support people with learning disabilities

Surrey Care Association and Smart Enterprise also are represented at the meeting

Gaynor Gibbins felt that we had the right number of parent carers and people with learning disabilities at the group. There has been good attendance at the meeting. If the meetings change to every other month and a member misses one meeting then it may be a long time until they can attend another meeting.

Anne said she really enjoys coming to the meetings

Joyce Smith said that a meeting every other month would be easier for her to attend. This would work well for the Partnership Board meetings. Sometimes important issues may come up which need to be discussed at the meetings.

Joyce said that she may plan to come to meetings but something else very important may happen which means she cannot attend the Valuing People Group meeting.

Important

John Spedding said that having the Big Lunches gives the right balance for the meetings. The non big lunch meetings allow us to talk about important issues.

Stuart and Gaynor thought that meeting up once a month was a good idea.

Cath White told the group that there has been a lot of news sharing at the last couple of meetings. Cath asked the group that if the news sharing is important and more time is needed then they should inform Maha or Cath and it can be put as an agenda item.

Joyce suggested to have information sharing and networking to be the agenda for every other month

The group decided that the meetings will be a information sharing meeting one month and the next month will be a meeting relating to a specific topic.

How can we strengthen the East Surrey Valuing People Group?

Cath White ask for people’s opinions which were the following:

Inviting more people that we know

Invite GPs

Invite someone from the Clinical Commissioning Group

Invite David McNulty – the Chief Executive Officer of Surrey County Council

Have a member of Healthwatch attend the meeting

Invite little charities

Invite someone from Buses for you – transport is a big issue

A member of parliament to attend group – Sam Gyimah

Invite Reigate and Borough Councillor Rita Renton

Cath told the group that if they had any other suggestions, could they please email Cath or Maha with them.

Invite Surrey Independent Living Council

Why should people attend the East Surrey

Valuing People Group?

Cath White ask for people’s opinions which were the following:

A place to know what is going on locally.

A place to quickly access and network of local and professional people

A chance to give people with learning disabilities and carers a voice

Professionals have the opportunity to hear the voice of parent carers and people with learning disabilities

It is a change of environment and reminds us ‘why we do what we do and reminder of our job

Wonderful speakers and good updates. Friendly welcoming people.

Opportunity to influence locally and Surrey wide

Katie Gatt to send Maha a electronic copy of the Live It project brochure. Maha to send invitation to the Mid Surrey Valuing People group

Joyce Smith felt that we needed to re-introduce the communication cards because it is difficult to understand if more than one person speaks

Gaynor asked whether YMCA could be opened up in Epsom. Rita Wright told the group that there will be a name change to Reigate and Redhill YMCA. One of the options are YMCA East Surrey. There will be regular sessions in Colebrook for Zumba.
