Regular Noon Hour Supervisor for September

Thankfully, we have had a couple of community members who are now able to help us from time to time as Noon Hour

Supervisors. We could still use someone who is able to help with supervision on a regular basis from 11:45 am to 12:45 pm daily now and for September. If you or someone you know would be interested in this paid position, please contact Ms. Elcombe.

FDK Outdoor Learning News Spring! We are moving into another season, and students continue to explore the natural environment as we continue our inquiries. Shadows on a sunny day generated interest among some students so we explored shadows. One student asked, “When you run does the shadow go away?” The student discovered that, “my shadow was running and not going away!” Try it at home! What did you discover? One idea is to extend this by playing a game called, “Guess the shadow”. Students take turns guessing the shadow of different objects and people. We are continuing to explore the interests of students through our inquiries.

As we change seasons, please remember to dress your child for the weather. You can help your child to enjoy the great outdoors by ensuring that he/she comes to school dressed appropriately. Items of clothing to consider for Fall/Spring include rainboots, raincoat, hat, sunscreen (applied at home before school), sweater, plash pants, warm mittens/gloves as temperatures are still low. From Mrs. Bowald’s Grade 6 & 7 Class Grade 6’s have been learning about SPACE. We have learned an enormous amount of information about “what’s out there”. Some students have made the case as to Pluto, the small spherical mound of ice that used to be considered a planet and some think it should still. Hear from the students themselves…

I think Pluto is a planet. Just because it does not orbit like other planets doesn’t mean it isn’t one. Venus is warmer than Earth so why should Venus be a planet if Pluto can’t? Some planets have an gassy surface and some have a rocky surface, why aren’t planets with a gassy surface not planets? Mercury is very small compared to some planets, so why is it a planet? Earth is the only planet that has a huge amount of surface covered in water, no other planets do so why is Earth a planet? I think Pluto should be researched further to find more information on it to help us understand why it should or shouldn’t be a planet. By: Kayden H I think that planet Pluto should be a planet because size should not really matter. What if Earth was only half of Mercury? Would earth then be considered not a planet? If Earth had a tilted orbit would it be then not considered a planet? Uranus’s surface is icy but it is still a planet so I still think Pluto should be a planet. By Chloe J Storybook Character/Superhero Day This Friday, April 12, dress up as your favourite storybook character or superhero. Wondering who we will be greeting at the door? Wonder Woman? Pete the Cat? Superman? Harry Potter? Shazam? Waldo? Black Panther? Anne of Green Gables? The possibilities are endless!

East Oxford Talent Show Student Council will be hosting a talent show on May 2 to exhibit our students’ many talents. Sign up sheets will be available next week outside the gym with tryouts during first recess from April 24 - 26. Poetry reading, singing, dancing, joke telling, karate demonstrations, magic tricks...all talents are welcome to audition. Acts are limited to 90 seconds. Auditions will be held at the same time for a couple of talented students to act as the host emcees! Looking forward to showcasing our many talented EO students! Grade 3 and 6 EQAO assessments All grade 3 and 6 students will be writing the provincial EQAO assessments during the May 21 to June 3 timeframe. Exact dates and times have not yet been determined. If possible, please refrain from scheduling appointments during the school day for the assessment period. If you know that your child will be away during this time, please send a note to your child’s teacher. Public Input requested The TVDSB is requesting public input on the revised Pediculosis (Head Lice) Independent Procedure. Please use the link below to share your input. https://www.tvdsb.ca/PublicInput/ Clean & Green 20 Minute Makeover This initiative is coordinated by municipalities to promote neighbourhood clean ups by businesses, organizations and schools. These actions, although small, have significant positive impacts on the environment and demonstrate the possibilities of collective impact when working together. This is one way to empower our students to make a visible difference in their community. On Tuesday, April 23 at 2:30 pm, we will conduct a school yard clean up to promote stewardship of our school’s local environment. Community members are welcome to join us. Please dress appropriately, and bring garden gloves from home to use if possible.
