DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Our East Low Country District, made up of twenty-two clubs and two Councils, works hard to improve our communities, preserve the environment and pursue gardening projects to provide habitats and encourage population growth of essential pollinators. I am delighted to have been elected by you to serve as your Director for the next two years. I look forward to visiting each club and meeting every member in the clubs and getting to know you personally. I’m anxious to hear what your plans are for the coming years, plans for your projects and what you would like to see happen in our District in the next two years. I will be working with your Co-Director, Meg Lee to provide you with information you need in your clubs to have all the tools needed to understand GCSC goals and objectives, upcoming events and how to submit award applications to receive recognition for the hard work of your clubs. Again, thank you for electing me as your ELCD Director. Please share your ideas and suggestions on how to make our District the best ever. I look forward to your calls and ideas.

EAST LOW COUNTRY DISTRICT Sue B. Lawley, Director 565 Seaward Drive Charleston, SC 29412 [email protected] 843-696-3794 “GardenFORLife As We Plant America” Immediately after their wedding on April 24, 1965 in Mobile, Alabama, Sue and her husband Glenn moved to Charleston and have happily resided here since then. She worked as a Civilian Federal Employee for a little over 30 years before she retired in 1995. During her career she was employed as a Secretary in offices at the Charleston Air Force Base, the United Kingdom Office in the Navy Supply Center, and Charleston Naval Shipyard. She was Public Affairs Officer for Southern Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command which covered 26 states East of the Mississippi for 10 years before her retirement. Her father taught her from a young age about growing flowers, shrubs, trees and vegetables. Because of this, she has always loved to dig in the dirt and watch things grow into beautiful plants. Upon her retirement and because of this love of gardening, she immediately became a Master Gardener in 1996, joined Lawton Bluff Garden Club in 1997 and then The Garden Club of Charleston in 2004. She has been actively involved in both clubs as chairman for a number of projects and events. She prefers working in the trenches. A favorite was as committee chair for the landscaping of a Habitat for Humanity home, a wonderful success which included installation of a complete landscape for the home including grass, flower beds with shrubs, trees and flowers, and a raised vegetable garden to provide vegetables for the family. The committee also trained the owners how to maintain it. She has extended her service to the garden club by actively participating for ten years in the Council of Garden Clubs of Greater Charleston as Corresponding Secretary and Recording Secretary and chairman of many committees and projects. For the past twelve years she has served in several capacities to the East Low Country District which included being horticulture chairman and heading up several committees. For the past twelve years, she has served on the GCSC Board as NGC and SAR Life Membership Chairman, Flower Show School Chairman, Students and Corresponding Secretary. For the past 4 years she has served on SAR board as NGC Life Membership Chair. She is an Accredited Landscape Design Consultant and has served as Secretary for the Landscape Design Consultants of South Carolina. Sue is an Accredited Master Judge and is a member of the Nationally Accredited Judges Club of South Carolina and served on its board for six years. Two years as Corresponding Secretary, two years as Chairman Flower Show Schools for Students, and Membership and Nominating committee for the last two years.

Glenn and Sue have no children of their own but have been blessed with many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and a nephews all of whom they consider as their own. Basset Hound lovers for many years, they now have a beautiful 2 year old Boston Terrier mix rescue puppy that Sue found, in of all places, at a Council meeting in Charleston. Bella has become the love of their lives. Meg Lee, Co-Director 1086 Perch Drive Manning, SC 29102 [email protected] 803-460-7517 Meg grew up in East Tennessee where she met and married her husband Don. She and Don have 3 children, 4 grandchildren, and a much loved Springer Spaniel Katie. Meg says being married to her husband has truly been a moving experience! They lived in Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Georgia before moving to Manning, South Carolina in 1989. Because of it’s beauty and gracious people, Manning quickly became home. While living in Athens, GA, Meg spent 10 years as office manager for the University of Georgia’s College of Arts and Sciences student advisement program. After moving to Manning she worked as the Executive Director of the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce. Meg retired in 2014 after 11 years in banking. She was a charter member of the Pilot Club of Manning and a past president. She also served on a City of Manning Downtown Development Committee. Meg inherited her love for making things grow from both grandmothers who had beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. After moving to Manning, Meg developed an interest in perennial gardening with an emphasis on variety and unusual species. Every time Meg sees a plant she doesn’t have she wants one. So her cottage garden contains a variety of plants, many in what she refers to as drifts of one. Meg enjoys wildlife so she also plants for birds, butterflies, and pollinators. She is a Master Gardener. Meg joined the Azalea Garden Club of Manning in 1999 where she participated on and chaired several committees before serving as the club’s 2015-2017 president. She served as a member of the Manning Council of Garden Clubs the past 4 years. Meg has completed 3 of 4 Landscape Design School Courses and looks forward to becoming a member of the Landscape Design Consultants of South Carolina. Beyond gardening, Meg’s hobbies are reading and travel, but her greatest love is spending time with her family.
