New Members By Lucy McGee, Congregational Development Coordinator

Being in the Youth Praise Band makes me feel great that I am contributing to worship. When we play on Sunday mornings I can tell that we make some people's day, and that then makes my day.

Jason Hickman

Being in the Youth Praise Band means a lot to me! It let's me worship and help the other youth worship in a different way than just sitting listening. I also like jamming with my friends.

Wyatt Cheeseman

Youth Praise Team By Chuck Cheeseman, Director of Music Ministries

The Youth Praise Band includes youth from sixth through twelfth grades. The group practices on Sunday evenings at 5 pm. Interested in playing or singing in the group? Please contact Chuck Cheeseman, Director of Music Ministries, at [email protected].

Being in the youth praise band is so important to me. Every Sunday when our whole band comes together, I feel God's presence more than anywhere else. Through our worship, we hope to inspire others to feel His presence as well. I wouldn't change my participation in the youth praise band for anything.

The Peg Gordon Memorial Prayer Garden is beautiful! Many people spend quiet time there in reflection and prayer. The engraved pavers, which have been placed in the garden to honor or memorialize a loved one add to its beauty. Pavers can also share a favorite Bible verse. Please consider taking the opportunity to honor or memorialize a loved one with a prayer garden paver. They are available in two sizes (8‖x8‖ or 4‖x8‖). A sample paver is on display at the Welcome Center. Order forms are available at the Welcome Center or on the church website at www.EastLakeUMC.org. Payment can be made on-line at the church website or checks can be made payable to East Lake UMC with ―Paver‖ in the memo line.

Vision By Carol Toyer

"Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am in distress." Psalm 31:9

More than one million Americans at or over age 40 are currently blind. Vision impairment creates problems for an additional 2.4 million. As Baby Boomers age, these numbers are expected to double. That means this is a problem for all of us. Blindness and visual impairment from many eye diseases and disorders can be reduced when detected and treated early. The leading causes of vision blindness and visual impairment include:

Diabetic Retinopathy: This common complication of diabetes affects and impairs vision in nearly half of all diabetics to some degree over their lifetime. Blood vessels of the retina can break down, become blocked or leak. Effective treatment includes laser surgery and some medications. Diabetics require annual dilated eye exams.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): AMD is the most common cause of legal blindness and vision impairment in older Americans because it damages central vision. There is no generally accepted treatment, but laser therapies may reduce the risk of further vision loss.

Cataract: This is a clouding of the lens of the eye and usually appears with advancing age, but can be linked to

smoking, diabetes and excessive exposure to sunlight. Surgical treatment can eliminate vision loss by replacing the eye's lens.

Glaucoma: Vision loss is caused by gradual damage to the optic nerve which carries visual information from the

eye to the brain. Vision loss is not noticed until significant nerve damage has occurred so screenings are important for early diagnosis when it can be controlled. Any vision loss cannot be restored.

We have a responsibility to care for our eyesight. God has given us our body and the resources to care for it. In I Corinthians 3:16 Paul tells us, "You yourselves are God's temple and God's spirit lives in you." In verse 9 he says, "You are God's field, God's building." By seeing our eye doctor regularly for vision exams and following our doctor's advice, we can become stewards of our bodies. We use the resource God has given us so we can become the extraordinary servants He intends us to be.

(Source: American Foundation for the Blind, www.afb.org)

The father of a righteous man has great joy; he who has a wise son delights in him.

Proverbs 23:24 (NIV)

Blessed to be a Blessing

As we pause to celebrate the birth of our great country, let us also remember how abundantly our Lord has blessed us.

God promised Abram, ―I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you … so that you will be a blessing‖ (Genesis 12:2, NRSV). Especially on the Fourth of July, we in the United States remember that God has blessed us as a nation.

That isn’t to say everyone here has an equal share of resources. Our government

isn’t perfect, and our land isn’t necessarily more beautiful than any other place on

earth. It doesn’t mean we alone model ―liberty and justice for

all‖ — or that we do so flawlessly.

Rather, God’s promise to Abram and us means we aren’t to

hoard our blessings. We are to share our wealth generously,

cultivate liberty and justice, and pass on to the world the gifts

we enjoy in this land.

The mission, core values, and four broad goal areas for the Children’s Ministry were shared in the May newsletter. In this issue, we want to provide more detail about the goals in the first area: Worship and Spiritual Growth. The 2016 goals in this area and intermediate steps are as follows:

A dynamic children's worship has been implemented to energize spiritual growth. (#3) 2014 Benchmark: A game plan for building a dynamic children's worship has been created. Next Step: A team, of at least four, has been recruited to research how churches similar to ours approach children's worship. Research should include onsite visits, interviews of leadership and revenant reading.

Two child driven mission projects per year have been successfully completed. (#4) 2014 Benchmark: Coordinate with the Missions Team to include the Children's Ministry mission projects.

The Children's Ministry encourages professions of faith by our children. (#10) 2014 Benchmark: Kids taking the "Communion Class" and the "Learning to Use their Bible Class.‖

The remaining three goal areas will be detailed in future editions of Pathways newsletter. They are Family-friendly/welcoming ministry, Seamless programming infant to youth, and Infrastructure/support.

The work that lies ahead is exciting! We hope you will pray for our children as we implement the mission, core values, and goals of the Children’s Ministry.

YOUNG DAYS NEWS continued

On June 2, the families of our VPK students joined us for worship as part of graduation Sunday. Our VPK children received a special blessing as they leave Young Days Child Development Center to attend kindergarten next fall. We graduated 67 children at an exciting graduation ceremony that was held in the Sanctuary on Wednesday, June 5.

Registration is going well for the 2013-2014 school year. We are planning to add a class for three year olds on Tuesday and Thursdays for next year. In addition to the music and movement, students will experience science and discovery next year. Both enhancement classes are taught by church members. Janelle Morgan will teach music and movement, and Alix Arndt will teach science and discovery.

Over the summer, we will have new flooring installed in the entrance and lobby of the Education Building. We thank the church Board of Trustees for their help and support as we partner on capital projects to support all programs.

Youth News By Laura Smith, Interim Director of Youth Ministries

Graduates On June 2, we celebrated seven

members of our youth program as they graduate from high school. We are very proud of all of our graduates and thank these seven and their parents for providing information we could share in our celebration. Each of these wonderful young people received a prayer blanket so they will feel the love of ELUMC as they pursue their next steps in education. We wish them many blessings!

Meet Laura Smith...Hello Eastlake Church Family! My family moved from St. Louis to Tampa one year ago, and I'm so thrilled to have found a church home in Florida. Now, I'm privileged to grow with our youth. The youth of Eastlake UMC are incredibly dedicated and spiritually mature. How many youth directors get to say that their youth group is excited about summer Bible study?! I'm looking forward to getting to know each young person better this summer, as we all continue to grow in Christ.

Favorite Bible Verse 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.

5 Love the LORD your God with all your

heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you

today are to be on your hearts. Deuteronomy 6:4-6 (NIV)

The next UMW program will be in September. Watch for details regarding date, time, and speakers. (Topic: human trafficking)

JOIN A UMW CIRCLE If you are a Methodist woman and still have not joined a circle, we have four active circles at East Lake UMC. It's a great way to meet other Christian women and to become involved in mission. Three circles meet monthly during the day and one meets at night. Please stop by the Welcome Center on Sunday morning and pick up a UMW brochure. It will describe each circle for you, so you can select the one that fits you and your schedule. The contact information of each circle leader is listed in the brochure. An example of some circle activities is included here...

Mary Martha Circle is working hard to support Metropolitan Ministries in Pasco (Metro Min). In August, they will collect cans of green beans, cream of mushroom soup, and fried onions for Metro Min’s Thanksgiving meal distribution. Donations from others in the congregation will be greatly appreciated. In addition, the group is making Christmas placemats and prayer cards for Metro Min. Please consider joining this circle. They meet on the third Thursday of the month at 11 am in the Glasgow Room

ROOMMATES NEEDED! Consider attending the UMW School of Christian Mission (now called Mission U). It is a four-day experience of listening and learning from leaders in the field of mission. This year's subjects are Walking Sacramentally, Living Justly, The Roma of Europe, and Poverty. The dates are July 11-14. Participants will stay in dormitories at Florida Southern College in Lakeland. Registration forms are available in the church office. Please Contact Lois Watson or Pat Peterson for possible roommates.

ARC: Volunteers for At-Risk Children By Bonnie Swan

My father and mother walked out and left me, but God took me in. –Psalm 27:10 (Msg.)

The Missions Committee is offering an opportunity to the members and friends of our church to literally be the hands and feet of Jesus through a new mission program: ARC--volunteers for At Risk Children.

In cooperation with Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County, the United Methodist Cooperative Ministries (UMCM) will operate three Centers for Early Learning for low-income families. These families are without resources to provide their children with adequate early learning experiences to prepare them to enter kindergarten with the necessary skills for success. Without this kind of intervention, it has been proven that the identified children are doomed to failure in school and ultimately society.

Our church will be providing volunteers to assist certified teachers and aides to serve up to 60 children (ages 2 months to 5 years) at the UMCM Center for Early Learning at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Clearwater. Volunteers will work with the staff to:

read to children help at feeding times rock babies help with art and craft activities work with teachers on enrichment activities

Each volunteer will commit to work at the Center once a month for 2 hours. If you really like it, you can do more. Because working with children requires certain security checks by the State of Florida, all volunteers must complete an application form and sign certain legal agreements to be approved.

Security is key to protecting children, thus it will be necessary for volunteers to arrive and depart on a programmed schedule by car-pooling to and from the church to the Center.

ARC offers opportunities for involvement in mission requiring little more than loving the little children just as Jesus taught. It offers opportunities of blessing galore for folks of any age and life situation—working, not working, retired, high school or college student, flex-time, married, single, parent, grandparent, childless, empty nester—to share God’s love in a most special way. Some of us will be available once a month and others will go more often by choice. Some may wish to be drivers and others not.

An information meeting with specific details and the distribution of the application forms will be forthcoming. Watch for further details on Sunday mornings. Bonnie Swan will be serving as the ARC Program Coordinator. You may contact her at [email protected] or 727-935-5547 (Please leave a message with a call back number).

Dear Emmaus Community of East Lake UMC,

On behalf of the Nugent family, we as their family of faith would like to thank you for donation of $130 to help with the ongoing expenses for Ireland. The outpouring of love and support has been incredible. These expressions of support have helped the family during this extremely difficult time. Ireland is improving daily and we plan to keep people updated on her progress on www.facebook.com/Ireland Nugent Support.

Blessings Rev. Dennis Reid

Mission Statement To reach out in loving support to our Church Family and community in times of need by giving concrete

expression of love and compassion through faith in action as taught by our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Caregiving Ministry organized a group of 11 to serve at Religious Community Services (RCS) sorting nonperishable food items during the mail carriers food drive on Saturday, May 11. The group was made of members of the Tuesday night pathfinders group, Emmaus, and one middle school youth. The Ministry also formed a special transportation team to assist Faye Monroe, our organist, during the six weeks she had need of assistance in the way of transportation because of a badly sprained ankle as well as a broken ankle. We provided daily transportation to and from her piano lessons, as many as three day, as well as to and from church. This took the giving of the gift of time as well as the gift of spirit and finances since none of these servants would accept payment for gas.

Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works James 2:26

During the months of June and July, the Missions Team will support ―Backpacks of Hope‖ in connection with Metropolitan Ministries Kids Camp. Our goal this year is 50 filled backpacks, 100 pairs of tennis shoes, and 100 packs of underwear.

Items Needed: Backpacks filled with the supplies on the list provided for either elementary or middle/high school students, backpacks only (appropriate for boy or girl), school supplies only (supplies on list only please), a new pair of sneakers for a child in kindergarten through 5th grade, or a pack of either boys or girls underwear a child in kindergarten through 5

th grade.

Supply lists and tags indicating what you will contribute are available at the Missions Booth in the courtyard. We ask that you take a tag and attach it to the purchased items when you return them, using the same process as we do for the Angel Tree gifts. Mary Martha Circle is supporting this collection. We invite other groups to participate.

We ask that all items be returned by July 28th

so they can be delivered to Metropolitan Ministries in time for their August Kids Camp. Thanks for your support.

VBS participants will be helping with our summer mission projects. During both VBS sessions, new sneakers and underwear for children in kindergarten through 5th grade will be collected. Let’s see how many pairs of sneakers we can donate to the Kids Camp at Metropolitan Ministries in Pasco. Before school was out, the Young Days families also donated items for this project.

We have all seen the toys made by the ToyMakers of East Lake on display in the court yard and we have seen them being blessed on the altar, but many probably don’t know much about the lives they touch once they are delivered. This ministry makes over 7,000 toys a year and they are delivered to over 20 different organizations throughout the Tampa Bay area and beyond. The ToyMakers select organizations that provide services to children and families in need looking primarily for those organizations that focus on children that have been placed in stressful situations because of medical issues, financial problems, the break up of families or other emergency situations affecting the children. We are in the ―wholesale‖ end of the business, as we do not deliver directly to the children or families. We depend on organizations that deal directly with children and families to do the ―retail‖ delivery. These include hospitals, homeless and battered women’s shelters, homes for at risk children, and places like Cooperative Ministries, The Red Cross, Ronald McDonald and Fisher Houses to name just a few.

One of our unique out reaches is to the East Lake Fire and Rescue, the Pinellas Sheriff’s Department of Child Protective Service and the Pasco Sheriff’s Department. These organizations use the toys when they are dealing with young children, who have been involved in an accident, police action or are being removed from the home. They use them as something to ease the children’s fears and allow the first responders to establish a relationship with them.

Children being brought into shelters such as The Haven, Sallie House or The Red Cross often have only the clothes on their back and so a simple toy provides them something to hold on to that they can call their own and serves to comfort them in a time of great stress and uncertainty.

Tampa General Children’s unit is one of the places we give special attention. Here children suffering from trauma and disease find our toys a wonderful diversion from the difficult things going on in their young lives. When a child is flown in by life flight helicopter and they have reached a stable condition they are presented one of our toy helicopters with a big red cross on the side. For those arriving by regular ambulance, they are given one of our toy ambulances. We have received letters from several mothers saying how much these simple little toys meant to their children and how much they appreciated them.

If volunteering in an organization that serves children in need interests you, ToyMakers might be just what you are looking for. In addition to wooden toys, we have members that make beautiful rag dolls and others who repair and recycle bicycles. You don’t have to be a woodworker, seamstress or mechanic to join us. We will teach you all you need to know to get started. All you need is the desire to help children in need. We meet at the Annex Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Come join us.

We want to include all events in the Bulletin/Announcement Loop/Newsletter. Please help us by

making sure all events get correctly recorded on the calendar program

in the church office. To add an event or meeting or to cancel one,

please contact the church receptionist, Vickie Downing at

727-784-9250 or [email protected]

Join us the first Thursday of each month at Vetture’s Pizzeria for fun

and fellowship from 5:30 till 8:30 pm. Identify yourself as being from East Lake UMC; and Rick Maida, the owner of the restaurant, will donate 10% of the check

to the church. Vetture’s is located at 36137 East Lake Road in the Brooker

Creek Publix Shopping Plaza.

Can’t join us for the fellowship time?

Rick has agreed to donate 10% of the check to the church for anyone who let’s their server know they are from ELUMC anytime on the first Thursday of the

month. Please thank Vetture’s for supporting ELUMC!

We thank our advertisers for their support!
