Explore East India: West Bengal

• The State of West Bengal lies on the eastern bottom neck of India. It stretches from the Himalayas in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south.

• Bengal has two natural divisions i.e. the Himalayan north and the alluvial plains. The Darjeeling Himalayan hill region to the extreme north of the state has Sandakfu, the highest peak of the state.

• The rest of Bengal is essentially a flat, featureless alluvial plain and a large portion is a part of delta of river Ganga, known as the Hooghly River in its lowermost reaches.

• Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta, is the second largest urban agglomerate in India, With A population of over 15 million, and it stands on the left bank of the river Hooghly.Calcutta/Kolkata served as the capital of India during the British Raj until 1911 and for long has been acknowledged as the centre of modern education, industry, science, culture and politics in India.

• How did the city get the name Calcutta / Kolkata ? • Kalikata is derived from the Bengali word Kalikshetra meaning

"Ground of the Goddess Kali." • Some match the name to the Bengali words for lime (kali) and burnt

shell (kata), since the area was noted for  manufacturing shell-lime.

Mother Teresa, has come to epitomise selflessness in her dedication to the destitute, the suffering and the dying. Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Serbia in 1910 to Albanian parents, she was sent to Darjeeling as a teacher. Moving to a school in Kolkata in 1937 she was horrified at the numbers of poor people left to die on the streets of the city because there was nowhere else for them to go. she spent her whole life helping the poor and needy

Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali poet, novelist, musician, painter and playwright who reshaped Bengali literature and music. he was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Tagore denounced the British Raj and supported independence. He authored Jana Gana Mana as well as Bangladesh’s national anthem “Amar Shonar Bangla”

"Patriot of Patriots", this is what Mahatma Gandhi described Subhash Chandra Bose. Subhash Chandra Bose was a brilliant young man. Subash Chandra Bose, popularly known as Netaji, occupies an honoured place in the history of Indian independence movement. he was a man of great courage, a single minded and dedicated leader who burned with patriotism. He wanted to free India from British yoke, not by peaceful agitation or petitioning, but by waging open war.

Swami Vivekananda became one of India's leading social reformers of the modern era and was a champion of humanitarianism and service to God through service to others. He is revered both in the East and West as a rejuvenator of mankind through the eternal truths of Hinduism. He spoke widely on Hinduism and its true meaning as written in the vedas and founded the Ramkrishna Mission, one of India's leading charitable institutions.

• Darjeeling the dream land of the East. Due to the proximity with three international borders, this place is strategically very important. Darjeeling is surrounded by lofty mountains. Outside of the monsoon season (June to September), the views over the mountains to the snowy peaks of Kanchenjunga and down to the swollen rivers in the valleys are magnificent. Darjeeling is a fascinating place where you can see Buddhist monasteries, visit a tea plantation and see how the tea is processed, go for a ride on the chairlift, spend days hunting for bargains in colorful markets and handicraft shops, or go trekking to high-altitude spots for closer views of Kanchenjunga.

• The country offers immense opportunities for wildlife tourism. The immense heritage of wildlife in India comprises of more than 70 national parks and about 400 wildlife sanctuaries including the

bird sanctuaries. The Indian government has established 14 Biosphere Reserves of India which

protect larger areas of natural habitat and often include one or more National Parks and/or

preserves.

SUNDERBANS NATIONAL PARK

• Located in the Ganga delta in West Bengal, spanning the Hooghly in the west and Teulia river in the east, Sunderbans was declared a National Park in 1984. The park covers a vast stretch of mangrove swamp, lush forested islands and small rivers near the Bay of Bengal. Sunderbans is home to the magnificent Royal Bengal tiger. Crocodiles and the gangetic dolphin are to be found aplenty in the Raimgangal river. The Sajnakhali sanctuary, famous for its rich avian population, is regarded as a part of the Sunderbans National Park.

Chilika Lake: South West of Puri - Orissa

• Chilika Lake situated southwest of Puri a distance of 100 km from Bhubaneshwar. It attracts a large number of migratory birds, like the flamingo, teal, bar headed goose, shoveller and white - bellied sea eagle. One can enjoy boating, fishing with 150 variety of fishes. Bird lovers can enjoy by visiting here in winter because migratory populations wing in from places as far as Siberia. Chilika is easily accessible from both Bhubaneshwar and Puri.Prominent fauna is Flamingo, teal, bar headed goose, shoveller and white - bellied sea eagle and Gangetic dolphins.

Manas National Park: Guwahati - Assam

• Manas is situated in Assam spread over an area of 391 sq km, earlier it was known as North Kamrup, declared as a sanctuary on December 01, 1928. It was accorded the status of World Heritage Site in 1985. Manas houses 19 of India's most endangered animal populations. It has the largest population of tigers among Indian reserves. It is a home to the rare golden langur . The prominent fauna here are the rhino, wild buffalos, elephants, gaur, swamp deer, capped langur and clouded leopard. . The main highlight of the park is the giant hornbill, two subspecies of which, the pied and grey varieties are to be found here. Butterflies and reptiles are also found aplenty in Manas.

Kaziranga National Park: Assam

• The Park was first established in 1908, as a reserve forest with only about a dozen rhinos and was declared a National Park in 1974. Kaziranga is famous for the great One-Horned Rhinos. Tigers, which are natural enemies of rhinos, are also there in sizable numbers in this area. Other attractions of this national park include the wild buffalo, magnificent swamp deer, hog deer, wild boar, , capped langur (badger). A wide variety of snakes including the rock python and the monitor lizards also found here. Many birds like pelican, teal etc. are found.
