Easingwold Parish Church is dedicated to St John the Bapst and All Saints. The
Feast Day of the Birth of St John the Bapst falls on 24 June, and the parish will
celebrate Sunday 21 June as it is patronal fesval. As in previous years we shall
invite our friends from Easingwold Methodist Church to share the service with
us. But what is a patronal fesval? And what can we learn from St John the
Bapst?
Put simply, a patronal fesval is like a birthday or anniversary celebraon. It is
an occasion for looking back over the previous year, for reflecng on what has
happened, on what has been done, on what has not been done. That reflecon
might generate one or more responses: thankfulness, regret, determinaon to
do be2er next year. It is an occasion for reflecng on how things are now as one
year ends and another starts. And it is an occasion for looking forward in faith
and hope to the year ahead. Certainly there is a lot to look back on over the last
year and a lot to look forward to. Perhaps our celebraons and worship on 21
June will help us in our reflecons.
And John the Bapst? Maybe we think of the story of his birth and naming.
Maybe we think of the prophet in the desert, oddly dressed and with an unusual
diet. Do we think of the crowds who flocked to hear his message to change the
direcon of their lives, and to be bapsed to show that they meant it? Do we
think of him as the one who prepared the way for Jesus’ ministry? Maybe we
think of him as someone who lost his head – literally - because he stood up for
the right. Certainly there’s lots in his life to inspire thought and reflecon on
their implicaons for us in 2015. John the Bapst is someone who has accompa-
nied, challenged and inspired my public ministry – I was admi2ed as a Reader on
his day in 1971, and rered from parish ministry on his day in 2013, and on the
way was ordained on (almost ) his day and served in two parishes dedicated to
him. Perhaps he will also accompany, challenge and inspire you as you reflect
on his life and the life of our parish church.
With every blessing
Peter Bowes

The church bells everywhere that had fallen silent for the duraon
of WWII were rung with gusto one of them by a young teenager
Arthur Rogers and his friends on VE Day 1945 at the parish church
in his home town Elland in what was then called the West Riding
of Yorkshire. “We went up, cheered and celebrated the end of
the war...it was just simple basic ringing rounds and core changes
(for those of you that know about bellringing!)”. And 70 years
later on May 7th he was pulling the bell ropes again—this me in
Easingwold. He is part of the regular bellringing team, who pracse every Thursday
and ring on Sundays and for special occasions, some of whom joined him on this oc-
casion. His technique shown for all to see on the BBC and ITV has not changed - pull
(the ropes) reach up & catch.
Church Appointments
Easingwold was the first Deanery to appoint a Deanery Co-ordinator with the main
task of maintaining and strengthening contacts between clergy and laity across the
whole area. Carol Colbourne has now also been asked to be the Administrator for this
parish, working mainly in Easingwold for three hours a week. She has been asked to
do the weekly noce sheets for church, proof read and print the magazine, also help
sort out the files and do some new copies of the service books. She is familiar with
Publisher, which Barbara Twigg uses to prepare the magazine. Carol understands that
her dues may change when the new incumbent is in place. To contact Carol email:
Also, Lizzie Stewart has been appointed Caretaker of the parish rooms to succeed Eric
& Mary Galloway who recently rered aSer many years of looking aSer them. She
lives round the corner in BonneycroS and her telephone number is 01347 823161.
