One of the activity is forulation of Indian Standards on different su!"ects of #ngineering through various $ivision %ouncils. &he %ivil #ngineering $ivision %ouncil is res'onsi!le for standardization in the field of %ivil #ngineering including Structural #ngineering, Building aterials and co'onents, (lanning $esign, %onstruction and )aintenance of %ivil #ngineering Structures, %onstruction (ractices, Safety in Building etc. &hese standards are evolved !ased on concensus 'rinci'le through a net *or+ of technical coittee co'rising re'resentatives fro esearch and $evelo'ent Organizations, %onsuers, Industry, &e sting -a!s and ovt. Organizations etc.  &he %ivil #ngineering $ivision %ouncil is *or+ing to*ards to achieve the a!ove goal through /0 Sectional %oittees covering *ide range of su!"ects and one of the Sectional %oittee is #arthua+e #ngineering Sectional %oittee, %#$ /9.  India is one of the ost disaster 'rone countries, vulnera!le to alost all natural and an ade disasters. A!out 802 area is vulnera!le to one or ulti'le disasters and a!out 032 area is in high seisic zone including the ca'ital of the country. $isaster 'revention involves engineering intervention in !uildings and structures to a+e the strong enough to *ithstand the i'act of natural hazard or to i'ose restrictions on land use so that the e4'osure of the society to the hazard situation is avoided or iniized.  5ialayanNagalushai region, Indoangetic 'lain, 7estern India and %utch and athia*ar regions are geologically unsta!le 'arts of the country and soe devastating earthua+es of the *orld have occurred there.
