Hi! I hope you love this Earth’s cycles interactive notebook as much as my students and I do! Whether you are an interactive notebook newbie or a pro, I think that you will enjoy this notebook. I included lots of real life pictures to help you every step of the way. I know how frustrating it is to have a product but have NO clue what to do with it! Each student will need: -A composition book or spiral notebook -Glue (I prefer bottled to make sure everything sticks, but glue sticks are fine too!) -Copies of the papers for each student -Scissors -Colors (markers, crayons, colored pencils… whatever you prefer them to use!)

Page 4: Earth Cycles - MLMS 6th Grade - Home · Glue Earth in middle. Glue moon to the right. Label appropriately. To save paper, there are two Earth’s/moons on a piece of paper, and two

The pictures are pretty self-explanatory. You will see that for each interactive piece of the notebook, I included a blank student copy and an answer key. Sometimes if I am in a rush, I simply give my students the answer key to paste into their notebooks. They are quick review for the kiddos, and still effective. It is up to you! You know the speed and strength of your classroom best. These interactive notebooks are awesome for going back and studying with. You do not even need to give students a study guide for the test because they have their beautiful notebook to use! These notebooks are a sense of pride for students, they put their heart and soul into creating them.

CONSTRUCTING: Construct each page with your students. I use a document camera, but you can also stand in front of the room and do it. It speeds up the cutting process when you say “cut out the rectangle in four motions like this” and demonstrate it. Kids tend to keep up much better. COLORING: I give my students about one minute to color. Many of my girls love taking theirs home to color and make beautiful, and some work on it during our fifteen minutes of quiet time. Don’t take too much time coloring, just a quick scribble of a colored pencil will add some brightness and fun to it! TABLE OF CONTENTS Have the kids label each page. When you get to a new topic, remind them to add it to their table of contents.

Page 6: Earth Cycles - MLMS 6th Grade - Home · Glue Earth in middle. Glue moon to the right. Label appropriately. To save paper, there are two Earth’s/moons on a piece of paper, and two

You will see that each handout for the kids to cut has three different options. This is because I include: -Answer key handout -Fill-in-the-blank handout -Blank handout If you have a lot of kids who have fine motor skills and have a difficult time taking notes, opt for the fill-in-the-blank handout or even the answer key. They can highlight or circle key words on the answer key to make it more interactive. Depending on my year’s class, I usually do the fill-in-the-blank or answer key handout for my kids. If your kids are very independent and quick writers, give them the blank. It is easy to differentiate with the options. You know your kids best, so choose what will be best for them J

I included a cover page. You can also have your kids make their own! After the title page, glue in the table of contents. Every time you start a new topic, remind kids to write it in their table of contents.

Make sure kids number their pages as well J

“Cycle/sequence” flipbook: Cut out both rectangles. Glue down the definition paper. Place glue on top strip. Place “Cycle/sequence” rectangle on top. Cut line between cycle & sequence to make flipbook.

Cycles & Sequences

“Examples of Cycle”: Cut out rectangle. Cut in half on dotted line. Glue strip onto paper so that the paper opens like doors. Inside, students will write down examples of cycles that they can think of (like day/night, seasons, water cycle, school schedule… they can be creative!)

Cycles & Sequences

“Causes of Earth’s Cycles” flipbook: Cut out both rectangles. Glue down definition rectangle. Glue down only the left-hand strip of the “causes of earth’s cycles.” Cut between each cycle to make flaps for a flipbook.

Phases of the Moon

Moon Phases Accordion book: Cut out both accordion strips. You should have a total of two pieces (do NOT cut between each moon phase). Glue the Waing Crescent to the strip on top of the New Moon. Let dry. After dry, fold the moons like an accordion. Glue down the Last Quarter moon to the paper. Fold back up. It should resemble the blue “Moon Phases” box on the bottom right of screen when folded.
