PARKINGPARKING

I am in the process of having NO STOPPING signs painted in the Car Park adjoining the Kindergarten. This is to remind parents that once the bays are full they should drive through and find street parking. Of late, several parents are parking in the drive through area and blocking off cars that are parked in the bays. This causes serious problems to our general traffic flow and to the well being of our children, who often risk being hit by a car while negotiating the car park.

The same situation arises in the Car Park that runs off Turkich Parade on the South side of the school. This Car Park is for the Dental Therapy staff and tradespeople who visit the school to do repairs.

Your cooperation in abiding by these rules is appreciated.

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTION VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTION

At the last School Council meeting I presented figures on the number of our families who had paid this nominal contribution. To date only 61% of our families have done so. It is quite possible that this could be an oversight as the beginning of the school year is a busy time for all of us.

I would be grateful if you came in to pay this amount which is only $50 for students in PrePrimary and above and $60 for Kindergarten children.

It is my intention to send out letters to families who have not paid. I ask that you pay this amount at Reception either in cash or by EFTPOS. Your attention to this matter would be

much appreciated.

END OF SEMESTER REPORTS END OF SEMESTER REPORTS

As the Semester draws to a close, it is Reporting time again. This year we are sending out Kindergarten and Pre Primary Portfolios. These are a collection of outstanding work samples that reflect your child’s progress in the major areas of endeavour and reflects the enthusiasm with which they do their school work.

The Year 1- 6 children will receive a Summative Report, directed to you as parents. The levels reflects your child’s performance over the semester and are compiled from on going data the teacher collects on your child over the given period.

Early next term we will be having an early close – half day, to give you an opportunity to discuss your child’s report with their class teacher. Details of this early closure will be passed along to you next term.

THE JOY OF MATHS AND MEAL TIMESTHE JOY OF MATHS AND MEAL TIMES

Believe it or not helping to organise meals not only gives children responsibility it is a great way to help with their maths. If you are having toast for breakfast, ask the child to get the slices of bread needed.

If you are making lunch and you have to make 2 rounds of sandwiches explain that you will need four slices of bread because you need two for each sandwich and two add two is four. Count them together and show the child the two groups of two.

At dinner time Ask your child how many people there are in your family? Ask How many forks do you think we will need? How many spoons, knives etc?

Then ask your child how do you know if you have the right amount? Hopefully they will suggest they lay the table and put a knife and fork in each persons spot. If not encourage the child to share the number out. You could then count all the pieces of cutlery you have put out. You can do the same with plates, napkins or what ever is special at dinner time at your house.

Chopsticks are great for counting by 2’s. If there are four in our family we would need four lots of 2 that means 8 chopsticks altogether. If you use cutlery you can talk about the different groups and then the total number. To set the table we needed e.g. 4 knives, 4 forks that is 8 things altogether.

Maths is also good for clearing the table. E.g. Thankyou for putting your cup away. Oh that makes one less, how many are on the table now?

Remember this is all fun and not meant to be added pressure on you or the kids. Praise your children and encourage them to touch each thing, say the numbers in the correct order and celebrate when they get it right. Happy meal times.

EMOTIONAL EMPATHY AND PATHSEMOTIONAL EMPATHY AND PATHS

In the PATHS program, children learn many words to describe their feelings which assists them to interpret how they are feeling and how others around them may be feeling. This is a difficult concept to develop, as misinterpretation of how others feel about a particular situation, can occur. As adults, it is difficult to put into words how we ourselves are feeling. Children participating in the PATHS program, are given strategies to try to figure out how they are feeling and how others may be feeling. For example, a student may politely ask the other student what they are feeling and thinking about. It is also important to think about different clues in order to understand how other people might be feeling. Through PATHS training, the children “act as detectives” in trying to figure out the feelings of different characters by using various clues. A framework is used to assist students in the classroom or the playground. The questions children need to be asking themselves are:

How does the person look?

What is he or she doing?

What’s going on?

What is the person saying?

How does the person sound?

Has this happened to me before?

How would I feel in this situation?

Using this framework, the children develop the ability to empathise with others and know how to react in particular situations so not to incite the situation. When events happen at home or in stories, movies, etc. you may take that opportunity to review the lists of clues with your child to help them to understand how they are feeling or how others may be feeling. You can model the use of these clues aloud, so your child can observe how you can use them to understand your feelings and those of other people and the behaviours that have been displayed so that the situation is not compounded by those around.

5pm to 7pm

Hi Everyone

We have had a fantastic couple of productive weeks. Firstly what a great response from the students and their families for our Hot dog and juice day. We had 200 students place their orders and it was fantastic to see all their smiling faces sitting out on the grass area at lunch time enjoying their hotdog. The P&C team would like to say a very big thank you to our volunteers: Corrina Fiorentino, Dimitra Godfrey, Carly Hearn and Kelly Smith-Brodigan and let us not forget our two extra special helpers on the day that were so patient and played beautifully in the undercover area, Miss Carrie Fiorentino and Ashlyn Hearn. It was lovely to see some new faces amongst us. Let us not also forget our two regulars Michelle Del Nero and Renae Chamberlain.

Secondly the orders and donations for our very first chocolate fundraiser were incredible and we look forward to delivering the fundraising boxed chocolate on Wednesday, 3 June to the eldest child of the families in their classroom.

Two quick reminders, one being our disco that will be held on Friday, 28 June from 5pm. So to all our students remember, get dressed to impress and come along to enjoy yourselves. All orders for Pizza closed Friday, 21 June. To our volunteers who placed their names down to help with the disco at the last P&C meeting, I will be in touch with you throughout the week.

The second reminder is our school banking is still going strong with 41 deposits last week and 48 this week. We have a total of 75 students registered to participate in banking, so for those students who may have missed a few banking days and would like to continue, Helen and Katrina would love to see your beautiful smiling faces again. Just a reminder to our parents it isn’t about the amount the children deposit. It is purely about banking regularly and being part of a whole school activity where the students get to receive a reward that they choose for all their hard work and consistency.

Have a great weekend

Be safe and keep smiling
