  • PARENT SURVEY PARENT SURVEY

    Last year, several parents took the time to respond to a Survey on how they felt the school was going in its Foundation Year. The results of this Survey will be made available to the public in our Annual Report. Details of how this Report can be accessed on the Internet, once completed, will be given to you via this Informer. My sincere thanks to the parents who responded to the survey. Improvement can only be achieved through feedback. Thank you.

    Despite the fact that we love our dogs, one location they are not allowed to visit are schools. They are prohibited for both Health reasons and of course the obvious one, keeping our children safe.

    We are happy to announce that we now have an EFTPOS machine available at administration to pay Voluntary Contributions, Uniforms etc. I have been aware o f the inconvenience of not having one for some time. Please do come in and pay your Voluntary Contributions if you have not done so already.

    PARKING PARKING

    In building our school and providing parking facilities, the architects have provided 155 bays. These include:

    • 46 street embayments [street side parking]

    • 31 community oval precinct bays

    • 78 school site bays – this includes 4 ACROD bays. Many of these are being used by staff, with the bays on the South side of the school being reserved for the staff from the Dental Therapy Unit, our school Gardener and Canteen volunteers.

    Current school numbers indicate that these facilities are more than adequate.

    You are asked to ensure that:

    • Those parked in the Edgerton Drive car park are allowed to back out by those dropping off or picking up children.

    • You don’t park on the verges outside the Administration area and around the school.

    • That children are not permitted to walk or run through the car park unless accompanied by an adult.

    The City of Swan and the school are working together to ensure the safety of our children. The Swan Ranger has been asked to advise parents and guardians of these rules.

    Following a grace period, infringement notices will be issued. A pamphlet entitled – Vehicles – School Parking is available at Administration, this is a City of Swan publication that details Parking Offence fines as per City of Swan Consolidated Local Laws 2005.

    You are reminded that speed in our School Restricted Zone is 40kph. Signage around the area has been erected to remind those who tend to speed. Once again, a vital matter to ensure the safety of our children.

    I thank you for your cooperation in these matters. It is important that we all adopt the correct procedures when our school is young and student numbers are low. As the school grows, this will serve us well.

  • I am sometimes asked what to do to help the younger kids to become confident in number work.

    The first thing your child needs to be able to do is count a given collection.

    Counting is a complex task combining actions and sub-vocalising. It involves children nodding heads, moving objects, touching objects, pointing, eye movements and saying the numbers. Sub-vocalising means they say or chant under their breath.

    Counting is not calling out numbers in order!!

    WE SAY A CHILD CAN COUNT WHEN THEY COMBINE ALL THESE BEHAVIOURS!

    • The numbers must be touched or included exactly once as the numbers are said.

    • The numbers must be said once and always in conventional order.

    • The objects can be touched in any order and the starting point and order in which you count them does not affect how many.

    • The arrangement of the objects doesn’t affect how many. The last number said tells ‘how many’ in the whole collection, NOT the name of the last object.

    So around the house, reading a book together or out and about at the shops, give the kids an opportunity to count. In this case, practice is the ONLY way to improve counting confidence.

    HIDING AND CHANGING FEELINGS HIDING AND CHANGING FEELINGS –– 2 2

    Through discussion and role play children will develop an understanding of the difference between hiding their feelings and changing feelings and the affect these decisions will have on them. Hiding our feelings involves having control over our behaviour; changing our feelings involves having control over our feelings. When we hide our feelings, we still feel the same way inside but if we are successful at hiding our feelings, other people will not know how we feel. We can change our feelings by making them less strong, by making them stronger or by replacing our old feelings with different ones. When we are successful at changing our feelings, we feel differently inside.

    At home parents and caregivers can discuss situations, where it has been important to hide or change feelings and when it hasn’t been important. In discussion it is important to explain why the choice was made. Situations at home can be used to explain the difference between hiding and changing feelings. For example, if Grandma always gives the same birthday present, explain why it is important to act appreciative rather than disappointed or when the child says they are feeling bored take the opportunity to ask how this feeling could be changed. When appropriate, real examples at home help to strengthen the concept of hidden feelings and changing feelings. When a child approaches you at a difficult time with the desire to discuss a problem or feelings, explain that this is not a good time but negotiate an appropriate time and follow through with this commitment.

    Learning how to effectively hide our feelings and to change our feelings when we choose to do so are two powerful ways for people to have self control. When we are successful at changing our feelings, we feel differently inside. The feeling faces that students use in class assist in identifying the feeling that may need to be changed or hidden. Within these faces are private feelings that student may choose to use if they don’t want someone to know how they are feeling.

  • Aveley Numeracy Puzzler

    Are you up to the challenge? Each fortnight

    you will find an Aveley Numeracy Puzzler

    inside the Aveley Informer. This is a

    competition open to all children attending Aveley Primary

    School. So put your thinking caps on and see if you can

    work out a strategy to solve the puzzle. Children from

    Kindy to Year 3 may enter the Junior Challenge and Year 3

    to Year 6 may enter the Senior Challenge, however Year

    3’s you need to choose and may only enter one challenge

    each fortnight.

    There is often more than one way to solve the puzzle so all

    entries showing your reasoning will be considered.

    Successful entries will then be placed into the draw and a

    prize given to one junior and one senior entrant at Monday

    Muster on odd weeks. Entries close the Friday after

    assembly (on even weeks) and should be placed into the

    competition boxes in the Library. I look forward to seeing

    your problem solving strategies.

    back of the Puzzle Challenge sheet.

    One look at our beautifully dressed children will indicate that you as parents are wholeheartedly behind the school. You also continue to take advantage of our ready supplies of uniforms and purchase all you require. Thank you for this.

    So to an apology. Our most recent batch of orders, dresses and polo shirts, despite being placed in November last year have still not been filled. I am told that we have an overseas supply problem and that every effort is being made to fill the order. My thanks to you for your patience. Meanwhile have a look on the P&C Facebook Page. There are preloved items for sale that may just fit your child. Once again sincere thanks to Michelle Del Nero and her team for ensuring that our uniform room is always well stocked and uniforms are, as far as possible, available for immediate

    Hi Everyone,

    Wow! Week three already. Firstly a great response to our first day of canteen last Friday. Thank you to our ladies for your time and for making this organised and successful once again. A couple of points regarding our menu the party pies are $1.80 each to order with the maximum of order being 3. Secondly our meals come with a drink included for $ 7.00. However this includes a water or a juice box only. Please can I ask parents to make sure your children are sent with the correct monies relevant to their order. As insufficient funds can cause difficulties and our ladies do not have the facility to make up the difference.

    Another great week with banking. We had 40 students using this facility with 7 new students starting their very first week. Parents will be receiving an information pack along with their newsletter soon.

    As some parents may not be aware, the P&C have a Facebook page (Aveley Primary School P&C Association), which we will be using regularly to inform parents of any upcoming meetings, fundraising events or notices. Please feel free to have a browse and ‘like’ our page.

    We will also be utilising this Facebook page for parents to sell/buy any second hand uniforms. If you would like to sell any of your uniforms please post a description, price and contact number (contact number is optional). Anyone interested in buying can do so by replying to the post. Once sold please put SOLD in your comments so admin can then delete the post. If you have any queries please contact Renae Chamberlain (P&C Treasurer) or via the Facebook page.

    Please keep in mind if you have any concerns or queries regarding P&C please come and meet with one of us personally or come along to our meetings. As this page will be used purely as a communication tool to inform the wider community of

    parents. We wish to keep this page positive and informative and will be daily monitored.

    Ellenbrook Falcons Hockey Club are holding their Open Day this Sunday 24 February from 9am to 3pm at Woodlake Oval. There will be trial sessions all day, as well as a bouncy castle.
