Liu Xiaohui, chief engineer of Sinopec Research Institute of Safety Engineering (RISE), and Miles Edward Buckhurst, global concept director—HPI of JOTUN, co-chaired the conference. Presentations at the conference focused on three main topics: Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) and High Temperature (HT), Passive Fire Protection (PFP), and Linings. Richard Holliday from PPG, Andreas Lutzen from HEMPEL, and Michelle Ystad Eriksen from JOTUN chaired the three sessions separately.

During the Opening Ceremony, Bei Gu, general representative of NACE International’s China office, recognized Liu Xiaohui as a 10-year member of NACE.

The two-day conference provided three sessions of technical exchange. A net-working reception allowed participants the opportunity to interact with profes-sionals within the coatings industry.

Eight experts from the United States,

On the morning of August 30, over 20

representatives visited Sinopec Yangzi Petrochemical Company Ltd. to learn more about hydrocarbon storage tank and CUI problems, thereby reinforcing the theories learned from the two days of technical presentations.

This topic-focused symposium pro-vided a great opportunity for experts, end-users, owners, and manufactur-ers to share experiences, technologies, and updates in the coatings industry. During the closing remarks, Miles Edward Buckhurst spoke highly of the conference: “The conference is so great! After enjoying the CUI session, I think preventing CUI is cheaper than living with CUI. I hope all the experts and participants will figure out a better way to prevent huge costs to assets, lives, and our business! This is really a great plat-form for our corrosion professionals.”

An innovative tool for maintaining a successful corrosion management plan Validate your corrosion control actions by business impact A Product Asked for by Industry In 2015, NACE International conducted a study on the global cost of corrosion. The IMPACT Study also found that reducing the exorbitant cost of corrosion could be realized if companies were to incorporate sound corrosion management practices. While industry believed in the benefits of a corrosion management plan, they found it challenging to communicate this need to stakeholders throughout their organizations and struggled with justifying corrosion control actions by business impact.

IMPACT PLUS® was developed directly in response to these findings -- helping companies in any market segment maintain and/or improve corrosion management plans, extend asset life, and reduce the cost of corrosion. What is IMPACT PLUS? IMPACT PLUS is an innovative, one-of-a-kind product that addresses the challenges asset owners face in corrosion management by providing a corrosion management framework in which the costs of corrosion can be examined, and informed decisions made from a business perspective. 6 EAPA News December 2018

This quote sums up my key takeaway from the Breaking the Ceiling–Woman Empowerment Session organized by NACE International’s Founding Malaysia Section.

This inaugural session, which was held on July 12, 2018 at NACE’s East Asia and Pacific Area (EAPA) office in Kuala Lumpur, has successfully rounded up professionals for a three-hour breakaway program designed for participants to reflect on their respective career paths toward becoming the next women leaders. Three prominent speakers presented at these informal, interactive engagement sessions: Elaine Bowman and Helena Seelinger of NACE International, and Anita Ahmad, senior vice president of Yayasan Hasanah.

Being raised by a single mother, I can personally relate to the topic of women empowerment. Under certain circumstances, women can independently navigate their lives and nurture future generations. Empowered women can do wonders, according to writer G.D. Anderson: “Feminism isn’t about making women strong. Women are already strong. It’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.” However, in Malaysia, and to some extent the Asia Pacific region, there is a significant gender gap at the management level of the corporate world. Seelinger shared these results of one U.S. study: one out of three are afraid to lead while 46% of girls do not want to speak up because they want to be liked. There is some degree of truth in this for most of the female participants who came to the Breaking the Ceiling session that day, as many in attendance admitted that they were represented in these statistics in some form or another.

Being born and raised within an Asian culture, my women colleagues and I have been taught that our roles are to support our spouses and male counterparts from the shadows. The term “house husband” is relatively new in our society, although statistics show that women enrolled in universities outnumbered men by more than 25%.1 Malaysia’s Female Labour Force Participation Rate (FLPR) has steadily risen from 46.8% in 2010 to 54.1% in 2015, which translates to an additional 750,000 women in Malaysia’s workforce and an estimated 0.3% gross domestic product (GDP) increase to our economy. Yet, as of June 2016, women accounted for only 15.2% of director positions in the top 100 listed companies on Bursa Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange).1 Unfortunately, the perception remains that if a woman manager is so outspoken and extroverted, she is aggressive or bossy and unable to deliver excellent work within her office environment.

While women are significantly underrepresented in the boardroom and as chief executive officers (CEOs), there are increasingly more women in top management positions given recent progress in strengthening the pipeline of talented female candidates. This is in line with all of the key highlights that were shared by Bowman, Seelinger, and Anita during the Breaking the Ceiling session. All three women shared intimate insights of their own journeys to the top of the corporate ladder within their respective organizations. Policies that promote women empowerment in the workplace and practices such as career sponsors, mentor-mentee relationships, and quota systems are all helpful. It was also promising to see more corporate sectors implement work-life balance and flexi-working arrangements to leverage career retention and development for more working women.

In my view, we have to continue to show perseverance in creating awareness of women’s roles in the workplace and advocating on their behalf to key stakeholders. It starts with you and me helping each other as part of the global community of women workers. Together, we can expand our network so that this issue remains at the top of the agenda for policy makers within the corporate sector.

“PETRONAS and NACE Internation-al signed the Memorandum of Un-derstanding (MoU) in March 2018.

Today, both parties have shown that they are serious about working together and creating a platform for the exchange of ideas between the two organizations. This Shaping the Industry seminar is a show of our commitment to ensure that our col-laboration is not only a plan on paper. We really want to make it happen.”

Shaping the Industry

Riding the momentum from the MoU signed earlier this year, PETRONAS and NACE International held a two-day seminar from October 8-9, 2018 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The event was attended by 60 engineers from various disciplines in PETRONAS, as well as a few from their upstream Petroleum Agreement Contractors. The topics of discussions for the seminar included Designing It Right, Constructing It Right and Operating It Right.

The two-day seminar started with four different talks given by in-dustry corrosion experts, all of whom are volunteers with NACE International. Dr Khlefa Esaklul, a corrosion and materials advisor from Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY), gave a talk entitled “Why Corrosion Failure Continue to Occur?”. Reminding the audi-ence of the real and still-occurring problem of corrosion, Dr Khlefa’s in-depth talk set the tone for a truly enriching seminar. He ended with a statement that resonated with everyone in the room: “Corrosion is not a job, it is a profession that needs passion, skills, and commitment.”

Dr Carlos A. Palacios, a subject matter expert with over 37 years of experience and a NACE internal corrosion instructor, presented a talk entitled “Internal Corrosion from Ground to Sales,” where he shared processing activities that occur in downhole right through to topside manifold, and encouraged participants to change their perception of “dry gas.” Dr Brian J. Saldanha, a NACE fellow and Engineering Fellow, presented his talk entitled “Mitigating Corrosion Failures of High Performance Alloys Under Aggressive Process Conditions in CPI.” He shared his experience of building in-house database for vari-ous high-end alloys performance and the failures that he has seen. Closing up the first day was Ashish Khera, a NACE Direct Assessment (ECDA, ICDA and SCCDA) instructor, with his “Direct Assessment” talk. The presentation gave a broad overview of the history of direct assessment for pipelines and shared failure cases from which partici-pants could learn.

Pain Points of Pipeline Integrity and Standards Agility

The second day provided everyone with an opportunity to answer any lingering ques-tions with a full-day forum with PETRONAS technical professionals and other industry experts. For these sessions, the three panel-ists from PETRONAS were Hambali Chik (Custodian, Inspection), M. Nazmi Ali (Custodian, Pipeline), and Abayazi Zainul (Head, Maintenance Excellence & Skill Group 15 Advisor). The first forum session on pain points of pipeline integrity was moderated by Kamal Azam Ibrahim (Head, Materials, Corrosion & Inspection Department) and the second forum session on technical stan-dards development was moderated by Nurul Asni Mohamed (Principal Corrosion & NACE EAPA Vice Chair). The Q&A sessions after each forum provided plenty of opportuni-ties for attendees to share their thoughts and concerns.

The event ended with closing remarks by Abayazi Zainul in which he stressed the im-portance of incorporating learning into up-dating of standards which needed to be agile. A lucky participant took home a signed copy of Dr Carlos Palacios’ book, “Corrosion and Asset Integrity Management for Upstream Installations in the Oil and Gas Industry.” The seminar was made possible through the ad-vice and support from Michelle Lau of NACE International.

This is the latest update and news from the Area Board.

Three important decisions were made by the Area Board in the recent Board of Trustee’s Meeting at the end of October 2018.

1. As recognition to our members down under in Australia and New Zealand, where there is no NACE section, EAP Area has proposed that the Australasian Corrosion Association (ACA) appoints one of its member leaders to be appointed as an additional member to our Area Board. With this our President, Jeff Didas at the ACA conference has conveyed this proposal accordingly and ACA will re-vert with their selection.

2. To achieve more member engagement specifically in China due to the major language barrier, the EAP Area Board has proposed that an appointed member will be added to the Area Board to act as the member liaison to China.

3. An excellent strategic planning session was held with our Trustees and the five (5) key strategies which was mooted by the Association Board of Directors were adopted and put into action by our Area Board, with Ownerships by our member leaders

• AKS-1 Governance – Toyoji Takeuchi• AKS-2 Leadership – Dr Lee Chee Hong• AKS-3 Events – Anand Kulkarni• AKS-4 Communication – Rolf Gubner• AKS-5 Partnerships – Nurul Asni Mohamed
