Sounds a little ambiguous, doesn'tit? The recent addition is a prettyagriculture student and she's the firstgirl to work in the new greenhouse. Hername is Ellen Heale, a student at theOntario Agricultural College, Universityof Guelph. Ellen is working for thesummer with the "green thumb" crewbefore returning to Guelph for the thirdyear of her four year agriculture course.

EHen represents the third generationof Heales to work for Inco. Her momand dad are Inco emp'oyees; George isa machinist first class at the Copper C'iffsmeRer machine shop and her mom,Laura, is a registered nurse at the CopperChff hospitaL Ellen's grandfather, FredHeae, a'so worked for Inco in themechanica' department at Copper Cliff.

At this point in her career, Ellen isundecided about her plans after gradua-tion, but says she would like to work withthe Niagara Parks Commission.

$ _ggLeo Vincent has been a maintenance mechanic at theCopper Cliff copper refinery for several years and has doneconsiderable repair work on the vertical furnaces, inparticular the replacing of water screens that were damagedunder pressure. Leo came up with the idea of blocking offthe lower end of the screen, which practically eliminated theproblem, and brought him an award of $520.

And at the smelter, Mike Gareau, an instrumentman,proposed a redesign for the fiber tees in Jamesbury valves.This works fine and gives a much more dependable oxygen"on-off' indicator. It also gave Mike an award of $215.

At Creighton mine, Charlie Briggs and JamesCorbierre teamed up on a suggestion to protect load-haul-dump machine pump drive bases from damage when anaxle breaks. Their idea was worth $50.

,Gary Eade, from Copper Cliff North mine, earned $45by suggesting the drill steel carrier be relocated, andDoug Teddy, of the Clarabelle mill, suggested a changein bus bars in the motor control centres, worth $40.

Metro Bendick, also of Clarabelle mill, picked up $35for his suggestion to provide safety chains on hydraulicjacks to prevent them from falling over. Elmer Lahtlproposed a method of fabricating a portable scale fromsalvaged parts of two others, that netted him $30; RogerBarrette and Richard O'Brien also won $30 for theirsuggestion of a platform around number 147 conveyorbelt counterweight, and Aleksander Maslakow found thata warning horn and red light in the car shed was worth $30.All four suggestions came from matte processing depart-ment men.

There was quite a large group that rang the bell for$25 awards: John Dever, for suggesting a warning sign andflashing red light near the number two vertical furnace, andHeinz Rummel, who proposed relocating a hot water line intothe silver building, both from the copper refinery; LloydFrth, for an improved method of calibrating shop instru-ments, Stan Smith, whose idea was to install a crawl beamleading to HL-2 conveyor, and Michael Macko suggestedan improvement to the repositioning operation on oilburners; Lloyd, Stan and Michael are all from the iron oreplant; John Hancock of the Clarabelle mill, suggestedlowering clean-up pumps for more efficient spillage control;Phillip Lapointe from matte processing, saw the need to

$tion$install a stairway on "A" floor in the FBR building; andfrom the smelter, Melvin Ross, proposed a concrete slabbeside number seven furnace pit to facilitate scrap handling,Andrew Sagle had an idea for a chute at the tail end of32B conveyor to prevent feed build-up, Henry Lanouazsuggested a stairway from "G" to "F" floor, AthanaseRicher added a clevis to a hoist vibrator, and WilliamBaxter pointed out an improvement to emergency lights atnumbers one and two cottrells.

Among the seven $20 winners were Bill Ingram of thecopper refinery, for an emergency shower in the tankhousebasement; Gary Mel, for safety chains at number two pelletmachine pallet changing area; and Leland Blois, for sug-gesting chain operated valves in the leaching building, boththese men are from the iron ore plant; Eldon Riehl fromCopper Cliff North mine, envisioned a safety modification toa drill press; Lloyd Perry, of Copper Cliff South mine,proposed guards for pumps; Tom Lamondin, Clarabelleopen pit, suggested flashing lights for vehicles guardingblasts; and at the smelter, William Neville added a ladderat number one and six bins for easy access to safety kick-offswitches.

There were also seven $15 award winners. From theiron ore plant Stephen Donovan suggested flame failurealarms for superheaters, and Gary Selles proposed extralights in the pellet loading area; WillIam Zyma fromCreighton mine, designed a wire plug for mercoid controlswitches on pumps; Len Brosseau of Garson mine, saw theneed for air holes in a naptha gas cabinet; Howard Ryanfrom the Clarabelle mill, proposed handles on top of crusherrams; Ronald Brouillette of transportation, suggested aswitch to turn off diamond lights when leaving an area; andWilliam Leach, from the utilities section, for his thoughtsregarding a guard for a pump at the oxygen plant.

Len Brosseau from Garson mine won his secondaward for suggesting the use of oil in boiler limit controllines. That was worth $10. And from Lawrence Sharpe, ofCreighton, a proposal to install reflectors on nine shaft roadalso won $10. Other $10 award winners were RodThompson and Walter Deveau from Levack mill, forwarning devices for mill conveyors; Jean Paul Dionne ofthe Clarabelle mill, for improvements to a step at number 15conveyor, and Roger Barrette of matte processing, whoseidea improved conditions at the sludge bins.

Since June, 1973, the Metropolitan Life Insurance benefits• -- ,, programme for Inco employees has been streamlined and

j restructed with an emphasis on service for illness and non-I industrial accident claims. With centralized services located at

the Inco Club on Frood Rd. in Sudbury, the employee benefitsoffice is staffed by three persons whose main concern is that youreceive a quick claim settlement. But to ensure that a claim ishandled swiftly, the employee must follow certain procedures.

Employee benefits supervisor Frank Homer,(left) appeared recently on CKNC-TV's pro-gramme "Pulse Monitor" with host GarryJanz to answer viewers' questionsconcerning Inco's pension plan.

If you miss work because of a non-industrial accident orillness, here's what to do:

1. Phone the employee benefits officein Sudbury at 675-6416 or 675-6417 and report your disability

2 A claim form will be mailed to yourhome unless you wish to pick it upat the employee benefits office.

3 Fill out your portion of the claimform and have your doctor com-plete, date and sign the form,specifying the nature of illness ornon-industrial accident injury, andreturn it to the employee benefitsoffice.

4. The form is completed and sent toMetropolitan Life Insurance Com-pany by Inco.

5. Metropolitan Life determines thevalidity of the claim and evaluatesit for payment.

6. After evaluation, you receive yourclaim check from Metropolitan Life.(Claims started after January 1,1974 are considered taxableincome.)

7. Once you have returned to work,phone the employee benefits officeand inform them that you no longerrequire your benefit payments.

Remember, an employee does nothave to be back at work before claimingfor an injury or illness. You file aclaim with the employee benefits officeimmediately after a non-industrial acci-dent and three days after you have beenabsent from work due to illness. Supple-mentary claim forms for extension ofcoverage when a relapse occurs, or whenrecovery complications arise, can beobtained from the Metropolitan Life office,

The employee benefits office inSudbury is also the place where newemployees are informed of the vahousInco financial and medical programmes,and where pension information can beobtained.

Benefits counsellor Jim Donald handlesinquiries about pension benefits and pay-ments, and interviews each new employee,advising them about financial and medicalbenefits.

. . -Each time an illness or non-industrial acci-dent claim is reported, benefits reportingclerk Liette Eastwood (above) or DianeOlivier consult the payroll hours register toverify the claimants last workday.

The first step in processing a claim through the employee benefits office is to phone in theclaim and then either pick up the claim form or have it mailed to you. Frood drillerRaymond Guerin has reported to the benefits ottice and Liette Eastwood clarifies some of thedetails asked for on the claim form.

Basil Sharabura, of Sault Ste. Marie, hasa good memory so has Inco in itswell-kept records that are stored in thegeneral offices at Copper C'iff.

That combination of memory andrecords recently produced a $3.36cheque for a shift that Basil had workedback in 1933, but had failed to collectwhen he left the company and the Sud-bury area in September of that year. Heleft no forwarding address, so the chequewas held pending word from him.

This past April, after a 41-year silence,he finally wrote the company about thismatter and his letter said in part;"Gentlemen, I am writing this letter toyou officials of the International NickelCompany about one day working shifteight hours that is coming to me. It tookplace in 1931 -1932 maybe 1933, inCopper Cliff, Ontario, at the smelter.

My shift foreman's name was HarryTrotter at that time. Other names wereMr. Jenson, Acheson and Ferguson.general manager was Mr. McDonald.president was Mr. Agnew. My badgenumber was 54 maybe 52."

Basil's memory was very good; hisnumber was 54 and he'd worked at thesmelter from December 10, 1930 toSeptember 23, 1931, was laid off,rehired in August, 1933, and quit inSeptember, 1933, He was a labourerearning 420 an hour at the time.

Very shortly after receiving his letter,pay office records were checked andconfirmed the fact that W. Sharabura,badge number 54, had one eight-hourshift owing which he had never collectedA cheque was made out and promptlymailed to him, and the accountingdepartment people are hoping he will

Our curiosity piqued, we asked Basilhow, after 41 years, he remembered thisdays' pay and why he had not written forit sooner, He explained that for severaldecades now, while driving betweenSault Ste. Marie and Toronto, (which hedid ocasionally), he intended stopping atCopper Cliff to collect his day's pay, butit seemed that he was always in toomuch of a hurry.

"When I finally decided to write thisletter," he said. "I showed it to mychildren; they laughed and said I'dnever get the money after all thoseyears. Now I'm laughing," he added.

After leaving Inco in 1933 Basil movedabout for a couple of years and finallysettled in Sault Ste. Marie where he hadraised his family and now lives com-fortably in retirement.

SudburyStreakerStruckin

1925!Among other things - some past and some yet to come -1974 will no doubt be recorded in the history books as theyear of the streakers.

Agile quick-fingered newspaper photographers have cap-tured on film several of these gallopers in the buff, butthey've yet to match the achievements of the Mond NickelCompany who captured just such an unclad likeness ona nckeI medallion way back in 1925.

And that's us folks, because the merger of lnco and Mondfollowed four years later in 1929.

Struck in pure nickel to mark Mond's 25th anniversary, themedallion's obverse bears a figure symbolizing the elementnickel, with a Latin inscription meaning - "Then for the firsttime a winged thing sprang aloft" - the discovery made by Dr.Ludwig Mond and Dr. Karl Langer in 1889 that nickel could berefined by volatization.

Busily tossing nickel pellets from one hand to the other,the streaker's likeness to "Old Nick" could be attributed toSaxony's superstitious miners of 1751 vintage who, whenattempting to smelt newly discovered ores which had theappearance of copper ore, ended up with a white metal sohard that it was useless to them.

Believing Old Nick had cast a spell over their ores, theycalled the metal "Kupfer-Nickel, meaning "Old NicksCopper,"

The maple leaves and daffodils on the reverse of themedallion are emblematic of Monds mining, smelting andrefining interests in Canada and Wales.

So, to streakers all, wherever you are, take heed - thenIckel industry is 'way ahead of you with a healthy lead ofnearly 50 years.

When you consider the scope of ouractivities, said Clare, you begin torealize what our men have achieved -truly a remarkable performance.

Constantly on the move with theirtwo-ton drills, the exploration diamonddrillers are the advance guard, workingin the furthest and deepest places in themine in their quest for buried treasure

Recognizing the fact that this is thethird time during the past five years thatthe exploration diamond drilling depart-ment has won this award - they wonit in 1969 and 1970- mines drillingdepartment superintendent Bill Taylorobserved that; "This record was onlyachieved through the enthusiastic, safetyconscious co-operation of all concerned.It will no doubt inspire not only ourdepartment, but all fellow Incopersonnel".

The highlight of many tourists stop inthe Sudbury area is a tour of the mining,milling and smelting facilities of Inter-national Nickel. But tours of these plantsare not restricted to visitors to this region- since the summer of 1973, ladies tourshave been conducted at many Inco sites.

In some cases, the event is calledfamily day, and children over the age of16 also participate in the tour. Since theinception of the tour program, more than2000 relatives and guests of employeeshave visited the underground workingplace of their sponsor , and another2500 persons have visited surface plants.

Other important visitors outside the

tourist classification include the technicaland professional guests of the company.Frequent visitors in this category areCambrian College students and largegroups of out-of-town high school stu-dents, who take a surface tour whenthey visit.

Also in this category are the numerousgroups of convention delegates, andorganizations such as the SudburyChamber of Commerce and Federation ofNorthern Ontario Municipalities whosemembers visited recently.

Each year, the number of visitors toInco facilities is swollen by sightseersfrom across Canada and the United

When provincial New Democratic Party leader Stephen Lewis visitedCopper Cliff North mine, he stopped for a chat with cagetenderPete Kluczkowski. Also in the tour group were Sudbury MPPs.Elie Martel and Floyd Laughren. The group also visited theClarabelle mill and the smelter.

Usually, at the Port Colborne nickelrefinery, when you hear the word "hypo",t's associated with the removal of cobaltduring the electrolyte purificationprocess. However, in this case, ithappened to be the "nom-de-plume" onwinning ticket number DXA 85113 on therunning of the Irish Sweepstakes atDoncaster, England, and it paid off tothe beautiful tune of $25,000.

The lucky ticket belonged to ClarenceMcDowell, a Port nickel refineryemployee since November 1936. "Mac"worked in the electro-nickel departmentand in the cobalt department beforetransferring to the instrument section ofprocess technology in 1955. He's ameter checker first class.

"Mac" has been buying sweepstaketickets for the past ten years, and thisone was the last one in the book, the onethe seller had intended keeping forhimself. As the old saying goes, "that'show the ball bounces". The ticket wasdrawn on the third-place horse, AnakMalaysia, who, unknowingly, rewarded"Mac" and his wife, Doris, with their

bonanza.Their first thoughts were to buy a new

house with the winnings, but those planschanged.

Doris bought a complete set ofBelgian crystal; "Mac", a shutterbug,purchased some additional cameraequipment, then, together, they wentshopping fora 1974 Oldsmobile Cutlass- completely equipped including airconditioning. This should keep themcool during their anticipated trips toConnecticut and the west coast whilewaiting for the next Olympic Lotterydraw. "You never can tell", says Doris"as this has been our second sweep-stakes winner". In 1970, they won £100and as "Mac" remarked, "If you don'tbuy a ticket, you haven't got a chance towin anything."

The balance of the winnings will beinvested in a trust fund and the dividendadded to his pension check when heretires next year.

Echoing the sentiments of his work-mates at the Port - 'it couldn't havehappened to a nicer guy".Port Co/borne's "hypo" (alias meter checker

When the words tension and membraneare mentioned, one almost expects to bepitchforked into a headache remedyadvertisement. But stress, tension, pres-sure, membranes and stainless steel areall synonymous with a new developmentin the engineering field.

Nickel stainless steel membrane struc-tures, supported or inflated by airpressure, are being considered for useas roofs to cover sports arenas, aircrafthangars and oil storage tanks.

Although the development of perma-nent metallic tension-membrane struc-tures is recent, their concept is adaptedfrom a familiar situation. Inflate a toyballoon and it will support the weightof a small child. The internal air pressureputs the balloons thin skin, or membrane,in tension and enables the sphere tobear loads.

Between 1968 and 1972, InternationalNickels commercial development depart-ment in New York researched thefeasibility of constructing stainless steelmembrane structures. Incos researchcoincided with that of D. A. Sinoski, aToronto consulting engineer, and nickelstainless steel was found to have adesirable combination of properties forthis application: high strength to permitthe use of a thin, light-weight membrane;good corrosion resistance to withstandenvironmental attack, especially inindustrial and marine areas; toughnessto resist puncturing and tearing; andexcellent weldability to provide ease ofassembly.

Following conceptual studies, a 16-foot diameter scale model was con-structed and became, in effect, a stainless

stee! baHoon. The roof design, theoret-icaHy covering a 700-foot diameter,comprised an upper and ower mem-brane. The membranes were stretchedinside a circu!ar compression ring, con-fining the pressurized air and creatingon!y tension stresses.

The amount of pressurized air neededto support such a structure is betweenfive and six pounds per square foot,which is a sma!l amount consideringnorma! atmospheric pressure of 14.7pounds per square inch says DonCassidy, project manager of Incoscommercia! development department inNew York.

The real saving incurred with tensionmembrane structures is the eliminationof trusses, and in some cases savings upto one-quarter of the cost of conventionalrigid structures could be rea!ized.

Construction costs could also beowered because the segments and con-traction joints can be shop fabricated,and the pie-shaped segments deliveredto the construction site in coils. Allmembrane components can be positionedat ground level and welded together.

The double membrane system hasbeen envisaged for use with aircrafthangars, rapid transit stations, marinas,and simi!ar structures requiring large,c!ear spans that do not lend themselvesto pressurization.

Sing!e membrane structures cou!d beused on sports arenas, airport buildings,convention centres and greenhouses.Industria! app!ications cou!d includewater reservoirs, and storage tanks foracids and oil.

The roof prototype above is composed of an upper and lower membrane stretched inside acompression ring. The two membranes confine pressurized air and therefore oniy tensionstresses are created in them. NIckel stainless steel serves as both a sturdy and attractiveroof covering.

Air-inflated membrane roofs can substantially reduce the construction costs of the enormoushangars required for todays aircraft. Costs are lowered because the roof sections for themembrane structures can be shop fabricated and the use of iarge and space-wastingtrusses is eliminated.

Alittleaheadofourtime

When it was built in 1929, the sewagetreatment plant at the Copper Cliffcopper refinery was the first of its kindin North America. After almost 45 years,that sort of pioneering technology needssupport, so a $180000 extension to theplant was started late in 1973. Comple-tion is scheduled for June, 1974.

The 'old sanitary waste plant hasbeen taxed to its 36000 gallons per daylimit recently. Located behind theprecious metals plant at the copperrefinery, the existing building is being

more than doubled in space with an 840square foot addition.

Extended aeration was a new principlewhen it was applied to the Copper Cliffplant in 1929 by the Activated SludgeCompany of New York. The process involves bubbling air through the sewagefor extended periods - six hours in thecopper refinery plant, when similarfacilities were processing for only twohours. The theory was that the sewagewas completely oxidized by then, andsafe to discharge.

A system called complete mix is thebasis for the new plant. It treats sewagefor only four hours in the aeration tanks,but holds any solids in a digesting tankfor up to six months before removal anddisposal by a local contractor.

Here's how the new system works:nfluent - the sanitary waste from thecopper refinery's wash rooms anddrinking fountains, for example - entersa holcfing tank that eliminates suddensurges in the system, then is pumped

through an aeration tank - where solidsare removed - to clarifier and chlorinecontact systems and to a cooling pondbefore being recycled in the refinery'sprocesses.

The solids are pumped to the 'old"aeration tank and clarifier, now acting asthe digesting tank, and held until removal,

The construction of the plant extensiononce again puts the copper refinerysystem at the forefront of sewagetreatment in Canada.

A 14-toot deep wet well includes two pumps, here installed byBernie Forestell (lelt), and Frank Sottile, that lilt intluent to theclaritier.

Early spring is a time of rejuvenation forthe thoroughbred racing fan in theNiagara area. A bounce returns to hisstep and a gleam to his eye; the racingseason has begun again.

With the Fort Erie race track just ascant 18 miles to the east of PortColborne, that bounce and that gleamcan be seen in the feet and the eyes ofmany a Port Colborne nickel refineryemployee, anticipating the sound ofpounding hoofs after a long winter ofsilence.

A day at the Fort Erie track centresaround thoroughbreds, the objects ofspectators' (and bettors') attention Theyare and who would contradict it -

beautiful, superb animals. Owners andtrainers are always hoping for that onebig one. Perhaps finding anotherSecretariat, Riva Ridge or NorthernDancer among the yearlings in theirstable.

The jockeys, naturally, are in the spot-light also and come in for their share ofadulation or criticism depending on howthe horse they were riding finished.

Returning again this year to competeon the Ontario Jockey Club circuit isSandy Hawley, who concluded aspectacular season in 1973 by riding arecord 515 winners, taking his third NorthAmerican riding championship in the lastfour years and his fifth consecutiveCanadian riding crown.

The spring meeting this year at FortErie ran from April 14 to May 12, but thehorses will return on Wednesday, July 17for the summer meeting, which concludeson Saturday, August 31. Post time is 1:30pm. and from the moment the cordialvoice of Daryl Wells, the track announcer,bids you welcome until the post mortemsfollowing the last race, you can feel thestir of excitement running through thepatrons. When the horses turn for homeand make that long run to the wire, yourheart begins to pick up the beat as youstand to cheer your favourite to victory.

Imagine its struggles to survive in thestupefying heat of the jungles of centralSouth America, and then imagine thisscience-fiction being thriving in yourown back yard.

It's true. Something of this form andnature does thrive in Copper Cliff; asnarling dragon of a creature, alive inInco's greenhouse. The proof is herebefore you: the pictures on this page.

This is no carnival pitch, no con man'sline. Just an example of thephotographer's art by Inco's agricultureforeman, Alex Gray.

That snarling dragon is really a lipstick plant, or basket vine (aeschynanthus-parvisolius), sonamed because of its colour nd growth patterns - its a hanging plant, that sends outshoots two to three feet long. The Latin label? It's all Greek to us.

The Copper Cliff Club mixed bowlingleague has completed another successfulseason, and this year's wind-up dinnerwas recently held at the Copper CliffClub.

This year the league was composedof nne teams, with sx bowlers on eachteam, and the league hopes to expandfor next season.

The top team this year was the EdwardLeblanc sextet who rolled their way tovictory in the totalpins, three-gameplayoff, and the team membersreceived individual trophies for displayingtheir bowling supremacy.

Other awards went to Art Carboni,Little Stobie engineering departmentplanner, for the men's high average, andMarg Desanti, data process key punchoperator, for the women's high average.

Many Inco employees are among airtravellers in Sudbury who have notedwith great appreciation the modernterminal facilities now available to themat the Sudbury Airport.

Now providing office space for Ministryof Transport operations, the old terminalbuilding is 25 years old, and was bulgingat the seams as air traffic increasedbeyond its capacity,

The two young ladies are Coreen andColeen Schofield, of Copper Cliff. Theywere born on January 30, 1952, Coloenfive minutes ahead of Coreen. Theirfather Harry, a long-time Frood man andInco pensioner, died two years ago.

Coreen and Coleen are mirror twins,that is, Coreen is right handed andColeen, left. Coreen agrees that whilethere is no overt example of extra sen-sory empathy between them, there is asense of oneness and a feeling of"knowing" about the other.

Our tastes in food and clothes aremuch the same, she said. AndColeens boyfriend is also named Wayne,Wayne Casconette of Sudbury' WayneKenyon works n the pay office at CopperCliff.

Coreen recalls that when they weresmall and their parents would be lookingfor one of them, the other one wouldalways know instinctively where to findher twin. At Copper Cliff high schoolthey sometimes wore name tags to helpthe teacher. "Our boyfriends don'tusually mix us up," grinned Coreen.

Coleen is a clerk with the purchasingdepartment at Copper Cliff, and Coreenis a stenographer with the benefitsdepartment.

Statistics indicate that twins occur inslightly better than nine of every thousandbirths and identical twins in somethingless than one in three of those. Not all

You should - its the creation of aman whose whole life has been devotedto the mining game - ChubbyDodd, mine foreman at InternationalNickels Shebandowan mine, some 60miles north of Thunder Bay.

Born in Timmins, Chubby startedwith Inco at Creighton mine in 1941returned to Timmins to mine gold in 45,and came back to the company andCreighton mine in 48. He worked atboth Levack and Copper Cliff Northmines as a general foreman beforeleaving to tackle the problems of a newShebandowan mine in 72.

He and his wife Gisele have three sons- two following in their fathers foot-steps. Norman is with the mechanicaldepartment at Shebandowan mine: Timis a drift driller at Creighton mine numbernine shaft; and Tom is a commercialartist in Toronto, Tim and Tom areidentical twins.
