+honors once. Turner fueled Ozarks to a program-best 12-4 overall record, and the team received the program’s first ever regional ranking (No. 16) from the Intercollegiate Ten-nis Association. He has been voted All-Conference twice in his career. A biology major, Turner was also voted the ASC’s Distinguished Scholar-Athlete for men’s tennis. To be eligible for Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must be a starter with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average for their career. The honor recognizes outstanding NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA student-athletes.

Sophomore tennis standout Todd Turner was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Team following a superior spring season. Turner, a native of Pearcy, Ark., was one of only two American Southwest Conference players to make the at-large team. Turner played No. 1 singles all season and finished with a 12-4 record. He teamed with Bishop Bass at No. 1 doubles and posted a program-best 14-2 record. He was named

Star leftfielder Ali Mathis wrapped up a spectacular four-year career in April by finishing among the school’s top-10 in a number of career offensive categories, includ-ing most doubles (40). A native of Lebanon, Mo., she ranks second in triples (5) and total bases (215), third in runs (81) and hits (162), fourth in RBI (62) and fifth in batting (.343) at Ozarks. In addition to being the program-leader in most doubles, she also has the record for most games started (160). In 2013, the left-handed hitting Mathis led the team in batting (.378), hits (42), doubles (11), RBI (17), total

bases (55) and on-base percentage (.457). Mathis, who hit over .400 for most of the season, also dis-played a knack for superior defensive skills. Using her strong arm, she regularly threw out runners attempting to advance on the base paths and also took away hits with diving catches. Mathis was named to the Ameri-can Southwest Conference All-East Division Honorable Mention Team following the 2013 season. The durable Mathis never missed a game during her four-year career and was a three-time All-Conference performer.

+season. Senior goalkeeper Matt Mouer joined Keane on the All-Conference Team in 2012. The duo also helped the men’s program earn the pres-tigious Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The NSCAA Team Academic Award is presented to those teams with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point aver-age. Under head coach John Cossaboon, the team posted a 3.06 team GPA. It marked the sixth time the men’s program has received the award. Institutions from NCAA Division I, II and III, and NAIA are eligible for the honor.

Sophomore defender Shaun Keane was named to the American Southwest Conference All-Conference Team following a standout 2012 season. Keane, a 5-11, 150-pound native of Rockwall, Texas, served as the leader of the Eagles’ defensive unit throughout the season. In addition to his de-fensive prowess, Keane was a productive offensive player, finishing with three goals. He recorded one assist to finish with seven points. In 12 starts, he

took 14 shots and posted one game-winning goal during the season. He was also named All-Conference last

Senior cross country runner Jordyn Ferrell was named to the 2012-2013 Capital One Academic All-District Team. Ferrell, who also earned the award for women’s basket-ball, was the team’s top finisher at the University of Dallas Invitational running a 35:12.03 in the 6K event. A native of West Fork, Ark., she placed seventh at the Arkansas D-III Championships. As a physical education major, Ferrell has been a mem-ber of the American Southwest Conference All-Academic Team for both cross country and basketball. She earned All-Conference honors in basketball following the

2012-2013 season after averaging 10.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. The women’s cross country team now has had win-ners of the award three straight seasons, a program first. Ashley Teague earned the same award the previ-ous two seasons. To be eligible for Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must be a starter with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average for their career. The honor recognizes outstanding NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA student-athletes.

+three-time All-Conference Second Team honoree and was ASC Freshman of the Year in 2010. Additionally, he has been on the ASC All-Academic Team twice. Friant has pushed the men’s cross country program into the upper echelon of ASC schools in recent years. Ozarks placed seventh at the conference championships in 2012, and second overall in both 2011 and 2010. Friant has participated in two NCAA III Regional events during his career. He owns the ninth-fastest 8K time in program history after running a 26:40.15 at the Memphis Twilight in 2010.

Matt Friant received All-Conference Second Team honors from the American Southwest Conference after finishing among the top-14 runners at the ASC championships held October 27 in Clinton, Missis-sippi. Friant, a junior from Conway, Ark., placed twelfth in the 8K race with a time of 27:18.89. It is the third straight year Friant has been among the top-14 runners at the ASC Championships. He was Ozarks

top finisher in each race during the 2012 season. The ac-complished Friant is no stranger to awards. He is a

Senior point guard Chelsea Glasscock was voted to the American Southwest Conference All-East Division Honor-able Mention Team following the 2012-2013 season. Glasscock, a 5-foot-2 native of Prairie Grove, Ark., was the sparkplug of the Lady Eagles’ offense as she led the league in three-pointers per game (2.3) and finished fifth in three-point percentage (38%). Additionally, she was twelfth in the conference in assists (2.4) and tenth in steals (1.9). Glasscock averaged 9.0 points per game, the third-highest on the team, and made a team-best 54 three-pointers. The ultra-quick Glasscock led the team in steals with 45 and

hit 23-of-28 (82%) from the free throw line. She reached double figures in scoring 11 times, including a season-high 18 against Texas-Tyler. She made a three-pointer in 22 games and made five from long range twice. She finishes her career ranked tenth at Ozarks in career assists (244). She scored 713 points, recorded 162 steals and made 155 three-pointers in four years. Glasscock, also an All-Conference tennis player, guided the Lady Eagles basketball team to the playoffs back-to-back seasons. She earned ASC All-Academic honors three straight seasons.

Sophomore catcher Sam Shook was named to the Capi-tal One Academic All-America® Third Team following an outstanding athletic and academic season in 2013. Shook, a left-handed hitter, had a breakout season in 2013 leading the team in doubles (12), runs (29) and home runs (2). He ranked third in batting (.333) and sec-ond in RBI (23), hits (52) and total bases (70). The 5-foot-9, 170-pound native of Katy, Texas, owned the team’s longest hitting streak (17) and hit safely in 32 games. He becomes the school’s seventh Academic All-America performer in Ozarks’ NCAA Division III era.

A mathematics major, Shook boasted a 3.89 grade point average and was named to the American South-west Conference Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and All-Academic Teams. He was also voted All-Conference. The Capital One Academic All-America® program honors student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level in athletics and in the classroom. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at their current institution.

+ The high-flying Dodd posted eight double-doubles dur-ing the season, including three straight in January. He had a 15-point, 13-rebound effort in a road win against Rust College during that stretch. He scored in double figures 20 times, posting a career-high 30 points against East Texas Baptist. In just two seasons, Dodd made an impact on the program as a two-time All-Conference performer. He was named the ASC’s Newcomer of the Year for the 2011-2012 season. A fan favorite for his acrobatic moves and dunks, Dodd finished his career with 770 points and 347 rebounds.

The electrifying Ronnie Dodd earned American Southwest Conference All-East Division Second Team honors after producing another highlight-reel season for the Eagles Dodd, a 6-foot-5, 180-pound native of Forney, Texas, finished fourth in the conference in scoring (15.8), seventh in rebounding (7.5), twelfth in free throw percentage (76%) and seventh in blocked shots (.9). Dodd, a senior forward, was the team’s

leader in scoring and rebounding while averaging 1.1 steals per game. He hit 21-of-71 from the three-point line.

Junior Kalli Simpson was voted to the All-Conference Team following a record-breaking 2013 spring season. Simpson, a native of Henderson, Nev., was named Hon-orable Mention All-Conference by the American Southwest Conference at No. 6 singles and at No. 3 doubles. Simpson had a breakout season posting the most singles wins on the team with 10. Her 10 wins were also the most in Ozarks’ NCAA III era. Simpson posted nine wins at No. 6 singles, easily the most in the conference at that position. She ended the year with a 10-6 mark. Her 10 overall wins placed her among the top-5 in the conference

at the end of the regular season. She owned a 7-8 doubles record. Simpson opened the spring singles season with a big win over NCAA II Henderson State University and then posted victories in six of her final seven matches, three of which came in Florida over spring break. In doubles play, she had key wins over in-state rival Hen-drix College and conference foe East Texas Baptist. Simpson was joined on the All-Conference Team by four other teammates: Whitney Lewis, Tara Richards, Stephanie Cloud and Mollie Grace Wilkinson.

D avid Ferrell has never finished last, but for the first time in his career, the 49-year-old veteran coach is happy to be in that spot. Last, at least, to call Ozarks his home. Fer-

rell will join daughter, Jordyn, and son, Josh, on the Clarksville campus for the 2013-2014 school year. Jordyn just finished an All-Conference senior season at Ozarks and was named the new assistant women’s basketball coach there. Josh just wrapped up an All-Star season at West Fork High School and committed

to Ozarks in the spring. And, now their father, will be the

head men’s basketball coach, a position he accepted in June, making it a true family affair. The newly named head coach felt Ozarks was a special place after visiting the campus to watch his daughter play the past two seasons. “My family and I absolutely love the university,” he said. “I was sold on the quality education the University of the Ozarks offered. It is a special place.” David and his wife, Kelly, were happy when Josh decid-ed to join his sister at Ozarks, but it was icing on the cake when David landed the job at the NCAA III school. Doug

Boxell resigned after four years leading the Eagles pro-gram, opening up the opportunity for the elder Ferrell. “My wife and I felt really lucky and blessed to have Jor-dyn and Josh at the same place,” he said. “But now it is an even better situation. It is a rare opportunity. I’m looking forward to it.” Ferrell is especially grateful for the opportunity to be able to see both Jordyn and Josh on a daily basis. “I get the chance to coach my son again and I get to coach with my daughter,” he said. “My office is about ten feet away from Jordyn. I get to see each of them every day and that is unusual. We just feel really blessed to be together.” Ironically, the Ferrell’s other daughter, Jassa, nearly came to Ozarks to run cross country, but eventually settled on the University of Central Arkan-sas. All three siblings have a long list of athletic accom-plishments, but David and Kelly are most proud of the life-changing activities their children do away from athletic competition. “I’m more proud of them as human beings than as athletes,” said David. “They are fine Christians. Jordyn and Jassa went on a mission trip over spring break and Josh wants to eventually do a mission trip.” David’s ascension to college head basketball coach is rare considering he had no head coaching experience at the collegiate level. But his high school resume speaks for itself. He spent the last 21 years as the head boy’s bas-ketball coach at West Fork High School where he posted a 458-176 (.733) record and made eight trips to the state tournament. He compiled a 510-202 (.716) career record

in 24 years as a head coach at Shiloh Christian, Lincoln, Gravette and West Fork. Ferrell, who never experienced a losing season, will rely on his Arkansas connections to turn the program around.

The well-known Ferrell, who has worked alongside Gus Malzahn, Mike An-derson and Jimmy Dykes during his coaching career, served as the Vice-Presi-dent of the Arkansas High School Basketball Coaches Association and founded the popular Arkansas Athletes Outreach Top-25 basketball camp in 1995. Roots run deep at West Fork, where David, his wife and all three of his children played basketball. It was dif-ficult in one sense to leave

the community, but also an easy choice to be around two of his children again. In the end, Kelly was especially influential when the door opened at Ozarks. “When it came down to decision time, she wanted me to do this,” he said. “She is the perfect coach’s wife. She understands the lifestyle of a coach and has been through it all. She is as excited about this as I am.”

T he sophomore combination of Bishop Bass and Todd Turner fueled the men’s tennis pro-gram to new heights in 2013, propelling head coach Shaun Wiseman’s team into a region-

ally recognized team. Behind Bass and Turner, Ozarks posted a program-best 14-2 overall record and the team received the program’s first ever regional ranking (No. 16) from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. As freshmen, the duo led the team to its first winning record in nearly a

decade. Wiseman credits their competitive spirit for

elevating his program into new territory. “They push each other in practice,” said Wiseman. “I knew they would come in and make us better, but I didn’t think they would take us to this level so quick. The chem-istry between the two is great and everyone feeds off of it. Our team is better because of their competitiveness.” On the court, Wiseman describes his stars as very dif-ferent players. “From a playing style, they are very different,” said Wiseman. “Bishop is more of an offensive baseliner who likes to come forward, while Todd is a great defensive

baseline guy who has just above average speed. Todd is more creative and more of an artist. Bishop is more of a grinder. Their personalities match that as well. Todd dis-plays a more quiet intensity. Bishop is the opposite, he is loud when he wins a big point.” Turner, a native of Pearcy, Ark., played No. 1 singles and finished with a 12-4 record. His 12 wins were the second-most in the American Southwest Conference at No. 1 singles. Bass, a native of Greenwood, Ark., played No. 2 singles and posted the most wins (14) at No. 2 singles in the conference. The sophomore duo posted a 14-2 doubles mark, the second-highest win total in the ASC at the end of the regular season. Both made All-Conference in singles and doubles. As doubles partners, they have posted an impressive 25 career doubles wins. And, the pair is on the verge of being regionally-ranked from the ITA in doubles. Wiseman describes the competition between the two as “friendly”, and that compe-tition has extended beyond the courts. “Everything is a friendly competition now,” said Wise-man. “They compete with each other in the classroom, too. They both want to see the other succeed.” Wiseman recognizes his athletes are more than just quality tennis players. Bass and Turner are members of the ASC All-Academic Team and have been named ITA Scholar-Athletes the past two years. Bass is a management/ad-ministration major, while Turner prefers biology. “I love the fact that they are great tennis players, but I can’t tell you how excited I am about their academic

successes,” said Wiseman. “They both have impressive grade point averages in tough majors. They would rather be studying than on the social scene. They possess a lot of internal motivation.” While the competition may be friendly, the pair has had

plenty of intense matches during practice. “The intensity dials up in practice when they play a match against each oth-er,” said Wiseman. “It is heated and takes forever. They are very, very close in ability. I give the slight nod to Todd in singles because he is a little more creative on the bigger points. And in doubles, I give the edge to Bishop because he has better hands and a better all-around feel for playing doubles.” While the two could be satisfied with what

they have accomplished thus far, Wiseman appreciates the attitude the pair displayed following the season. “After the last match they both said they have a lot of work to do over the summer,” he said. “They want to prepare and concentrate on next season. I expect them to continue to grow. They are great friends. And that has made them so much better.”

J unior rightfielder Freddy Prince won the 2013 American Southwest Conference batting title with a .406 average, but head coach Jimmy Clark believes his star player is more than a guy

that can hit for average. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound right-handed hitter won the title over Schreiner University’s Chase Valdez, who hit .399. To secure the title, Prince caught fire late in the season posting a .500 average in the month of April. Prince, a native of Jonesboro, Ark., also led the

league in hits with 63. On the season, he had 11 doubles,

one home run and 22 RBI. Prince led the team with 20 multiple-hit games and owned a 13-game hit streak during the season. He posted six three-hit games and went 5-for-6 with three RBI against nationally-ranked Texas-Tyler on March 29. Behind Prince’s bat, Ozarks finished the season with a league-high .299 batting average. “Freddy was our most consistent hitter all year and was hot in the last half of the year,” said head coach Jimmy Clark. “Without a doubt, winning a batting title is not an easy thing to do. He showed signs of that type of potential in the past and now he has emerged into the player we

thought he would become. We are glad to have him back for another year.” It is the second time an Ozarks’ player has won the ASC batting title. All-America shortstop Cory Briggs accomplished the feat in 2008 with a .467 average. For his hitting prowess, Prince was named to the 2013 D3baseball.com All-Region Second Team and the American South-west Conference All-East Division First Team. “He hit over .400 with the new bats, but it would have been interest-ing to see what he could have done with the old bats,” said Clark. Prince is no stranger to hitting for average. He finished with a .529 mark his senior season at Westside High School in Jonesboro. And, he has carried that trend into summer baseball. He was named the Hitter of the Night in the Texas Collegiate League for his performance June 11. Prince, who plays for the Acadiana (Louisiana) Cane Cutters, went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI in a win over the Victoria Generals. Ironically, it is not his bat that could afford him the opportunity to play professionally. It is his right arm, according to Clark. “He has the best arm I’ve ever coached,” said Clark. “It is electric. In the summer colle-giate league, he will have a chance to be seen by a number of scouts. Someone might take a chance on him because he runs it up there in the lower to mid-90’s. We really hope he will have a chance to get drafted. He has gotten better on the mound. During the season we started to use him as a closer and he seemed comfortable.” Prince landed at Ozarks after a heated recruiting

battle with a number of other schools. He eventually chose Ozarks after starring as a

catcher in high school. “We saw him at a showcase in Tulsa

and we really liked his arm,” said Clark. ”Even as a catcher that

stood out. He had opportuni-ties to play elsewhere, but chose us.”

Clark has seen his multi-talented player

progress over the last three years and expects

another solid season in 2014. “He has gotten better over his three

years here,” said Clark. “He has more plate discipline. He was the best hitter in the conference

in 2013. He is very athletic. He can run the bases and he can steal bases, and in the outfield he can

run down balls. And, with a laser arm from the outfield, opponents don’t run on him. With his frame and athletic ability, I think he could play a couple of different sports in college.”

Clark also appreciates Prince’s work ethic and points to an improved mental approach for

his success. “He is usually the first guy at the field,” he said.

“He is willing to put in the work. He is a lot better men-tally since his freshman year and that has translated into more success on the field.”

Record-setting softball pitcher Amber Rollins was voted the school’s Female Athlete of the Year for the 2012-2013 season. Rollins completed her second straight record-breaking season for the Lady Eagles. The right-handed pitcher from Searcy, Ark., broke the school record with 15 strikeouts in a game April 16. Rollins also threw the school’s fourth no-hitter March 1 at the American South-west Conference First Pitch Tournament. She led the ASC in strikeouts (146) and strikeouts per game (9.5). She ranked fifth in the conference in innings pitched (137.1) and tied for third in saves with two. She was named to the

ASC All-East Division First Team after finishing the year with a 10-9 record, including two wins over nationally-ranked opponents, and a 4.00 ERA. She earned ASC Pitcher of the Week twice during the season. Rollins had six or more strikeouts in 13 games. In 2012, Rollins was named ASC Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the ASC All-East Division Second Team. A biology major, she is a member of the ASC All-Academic Team and has been on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athlete Team twice.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Boxell easily led the American Southwest Con-ference in assists and was seventh in all of NCAA III. Boxell was also among the most reliable point guards in the country, ranking fifteenth in NCAA III in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.5). Over four years, he scored 225 career points and re-corded 66 steals. He played in 98 career games, including starting all 25 his senior season.

Senior point guard Isaiah Boxell finished his four-year career as the school’s all-time assist leader. The Ponder, Texas, native came into the 2012-2013 season with 218 career assists and needed 141 more to break the record held by Marcus Hampton, who set the mark in 1992. Boxell did just that as he tallied 168 by season’s end. Boxell broke the record against Louisiana College February 7 when he dished out six assists. He then went on to average
