ARE YOU READY TO GROW CLOSER TO THE LORD THIS ADVENT? Let the Fire Fall, by Father Michael Scanlan – “I loved this book so much, that I am going to buy my own copy! The book is about how the Holy Spirit changed one man's life and the massive ripple effect it had on all those he encountered. For Father Scanlan, baptism in the Holy Spirit was a powerful experience that was pivotal in transforming his already strong relationship with God. The willing surrender of his life – allowing Jesus to completely take over – permanently changed him. His way of praying went from him controlling his prayer time, to the Spirit welling up within him – praising God with a new intimacy. The words of Scripture took on power and a new depth, becoming personally meaningful. Through baptism of the Holy Spirit, he received the spiritual gifts mentioned by Paul in 1Cor. 12:8-10, proving that a divine power is at work within each one of us. Father Scanlan expounds on the vital importance of repentance and its necessity in conquering sin, which leads to true joy. The chapter on healing reinforces the power of God's abundant graces and how we so often try to limit Him. The changes that Father Scanlan made at Steubenville University transformed the entire faculty and student body into the spiritual powerhouse we now know as Franciscan University. Read this book and invite the Holy Spirit into your life!" A Parish Library Patron. This book is available in your St. Helen Parish Library!

THE ROSARY:During the 18th-19th century, it was estimated as many as 300,000 thousand Catholic Vietnamese were martyred for their faith. These Vietnamese martyrs suffered some of the worst torments known to man. Entire villages were exterminated. But despite great persecution groups of Catholics would gather secretly to pray the Rosary. One of the most well known gathering places was in the forest of La Vang. In 1798, a group of devout Vietnamese Catholics gathered to pray the Rosary and were privileged to receive an apparition of the our Blessed Mother. Shortly after the apparition, the group was apprehended and executed. After their martyrdom, Our Lady began to appear frequently in La Vang to strengthen the faith of the persecuted. Once the persecution was over, the faithful built a basilica dedicated to Our Lady of La Vang. To this day it remains one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in all of Vietnam.

CROSSING THE GOAL: We are very grateful for those participating in our “Crossing the Goal” debt reduction campaign. Our current mortgage debt is $612,186 and we are hoping to pay this off over the next 14 months. We can reach this goal if the 155 parishioners whohavefulfilledtheir2012pledgewouldjoininthisfinalstep by donating to the debt reduction fund. This could be accomplished by considering an end of year, one-time donation or by using the debt reduction envelopes that are enclosed in your monthly envelope packet. Perhaps your employer has a matching gift program that would help us in our endeavor. Again, we are most grateful for your generous support over the years that has allowed us to have a beautiful church in which to worship, as well as additional classroom and learning space in our school. We ask you to please consider helping out once again so that we may be debt free by 2020.
YEAR-END GIVING: Deadlines for Year-end giving are as follows: – ReceivedintheParishOfficebynoononDecember31. – Through the collection on December 31. – Processed through Online Giving by 5:00 p.m. on December 31.
"IT'S A MATTER OF LIFE..."Whenever Pro-life legislation is proposed, it is a certainty that pro-death opponents will raise the issue of pregnancy in the case of rape and use rape as a “Red Herring” reason
justifying abortion. Faced with this ploy, advocates for life should pose this question:“If a woman who is raped cannot kill her rapist who is guilty, why should she be allowed to kill her child who is innocent?”
RETIREMENT FOR THE RELIGIOUS There is an envelope in your packet this month for the Retired Religious. This can be dropped in the collection basket any weekend in December. Thank you for your past generosity.

ADVENT DECORATIONS: If you hadn’t noticed, decorations have begun going up for the Advent season as we await the birth of Jesus! To the left of Fr Jay’s confessional you will notice a scene set up. What is the meaning of this? I’m glad you asked! It is a scene from the Garden of Eden. Why this for Advent? We are reminded that God sent his son Jesus into our world to saveusfromsin.Ourfirstparents,AdamandEvesinnedat the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. That tree is represented with apples growing on it. You will see the devil in that tree represented by a snake! There is also the Tree of Life which has the Bread of Life represented on its leaves. In between the trees you see a lamb which of course represents Jesus. Behind the lamb is the cross that the lamb willbecrucifiedon.Onetreehastheforbiddenfoodandthe other tree, the commanded food. The Eucharist is meant to be our food for the journey through life. As we await the birth of Jesus, let’s remember WHY God sent him to us. He is our Savior, he is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
FAMILY CHRISTMAS CAROLING:Christmas is a beautiful celebration of God’s love for us through the gift of His Son, Jesus. You can bring the love and joy of Christ to others. Join us on

CHRISTMAS PROGRAMON DECEMBER 14TH: A note from Mrs. Houlahan. It’s time again for Christmas… at least in music class! (Sorry Thanksgiving!). Our Kindergarten through Fourth Grade have been hard at work learning the songs to this year’s Christmas musical, “Crazy Busy Peaceful Holy Night!” With the performance quickly approaching, we wanted to give you a heads up on what the children will be wearing so you can take advantage of any holiday deals. We are keeping it simple, black bottoms and coordinated colored tops. Kindergarten and Second Grade in red tops, and First and Third Grades in white tops. They will look like an adorable candy cane standing on the risers! The tops can be long sleeve, short sleeve, dress shirt, or polo shirt, as long as they are solid white or red, you are good. The bottoms can be pants, jeans, long skirt, or knee length skirt, as long as they are solid black. As our leads in the play, Fourth Grade’s costumes will be slightly different, and they will get a special note soon about these! Thank you all for helping us prepare for this “Crazy Busy Peaceful Holy” season!
