O n behalf of the Local Organising and Programme Committees, we take great pleasure in welcoming you to the XIV Congress of the European Association of Agricultural Economists in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Thank you for deciding to participate in the Congress, and special thanks to those of you who provided valuable contributions to the Congress programme.

Agri-food and rural innovations for healthier societies is the theme of this Congress. Innovation here should be interpreted broadly, referring not only to product and process innovation, but also to innovation of the different segments of society related to agriculture. After all, innovation can be understood as an agent for change in the agricultural and food sector, and in the rural system at large. Agricultural economists should and can contribute to discussions regarding important future challenges and the wellbeing of humankind: sustainable agricultural production, climate change, productivity, healthy diets etc. We look forward to insightful presentations and fruitful discussions at this congress.

The University of Ljubljana and the Slovenian Association of Agricultural Economists are delighted to have had the opportunity to organise the Congress. For the small community of agricultural economists, this is a large responsibility. Amidst the challenges that the modern science of agricultural economics is facing, we have done our best to ensure a friendly ambience for making acquaintances and having discussions, as well as of course for getting to know our country and its capital. Ljubljana, the future Green Capital of Europe that ranks among the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, is bound to charm and excite you with its spirit and atmosphere. We have planned the extra programme, receptions and excursions with special focus on the introduction and tasting of Slovenian culinary specialties. As agricultural and food economists, we are especially proud of the food, wine and beer that combines the sunny side of the Alps with the northern Mediterranean, and we are eager to share it with you.

The Congress has been organised under the patronage of the president of state, Mr Borut Pahor, with the support of the Ministry of Republic of Slovenia of agriculture and environment as well as a long list of supporters and sponsors provided at the end of this brochure. We at the Local Organising Committees would like to express our deep gratitude for this support which we could not take as axiomatic: considering the economic situation in the country, this even emphasises the importance of food and knowledge in a Slovenian and European context. Now, we are all looking forward to the start of the Congress, and we truly hope that it will provide you with both intellectual excitement and a memorable experience.

While there has been a lot of discussions on the CAP reforms from an economic and welfare analysis perspective, much less attention has been paid to the political economy of it.In this symposium we analyze what determined the outcome of the negotiations. This panel brings together key observers on this and previous CAP Reforms with political economists who have analyzed previous CAP Reforms. The combination of both in a symposium should yield important new insights, and ample material for an interesting discussion.
