Mark�Rea,�Ph.D.�will�outline�that�great�strides�have�been�made�to�reduce�the�cost�of�lighting�for�general�illumination;�however,�little�progress�has�beenmade�to� increase�the�benefits� that� lighting�provides� to�society� in�“Monetizing� the�Benefits�of�Lighting”�as� the� Impact�Speaker�on�May�6.�Dr.�Rea�hasserved�as�Director�since�the�Lighting�Research�Center�was�established�in�1988.�Trained�as�a�biophysicist�and�neuroscientist,�with�a�Ph.D.�in�biophysics,he�is�the�author�of�more�than�250�scientific�and�technical�articles�related�to�vision,�lighting�engineering�and�human�factors,�and�was�the�editor-in-chief�ofthe�8th�and�9th�editions�of�the�Illuminating�Engineering�Society�of�North�America�(IESNA)�Lighting�Handbook.

Birnbaum Electric Becomes Exclusive Edison DistributorIn�1909,�Samuel�Birnbaum�opened�Birnbaum�Electric�in�lower�Manhattan,�befriendedThomas�Edison�and�became�a�distributor� for� the�General�Electric�Company.� LikeEdison,�Sam�was�a�master�electrician,�business�man�and� inventor.�He�and�Edisonhad�much�in�common�and�they�remained�friends�until�Edison’s�death�in�1931.
In�1914,�Thomas�Edison�personally�presented�Sam�Birnbaum�with�a�General�ElectricIncentive�Award� for�his� company’s�outstanding�performance�as�a�distributor� for� theGE�Company.�The�award,� a� hand-crafted�and�hand-blown� replica�of�Edison’s� firstincandescent� bulb�with� a� high� resistance� carbon� filament,� is� now�a� treasured�andvery�valuable�family�heirloom.
Like Edison, Birnbaum Moves To New JerseyWith�business�booming,�Sam’s� son�Bertram� joined� the� company�which�moveduptown�to�a�larger�building�on�Broadway�and�17th�in�NYC.�Birnbaum�Electric�becameknown�as�Broadway�Electric.�Bertram’s�son�Larry�joined�Broadway�Electric�and,�likeEdison� (Edison,�New�Jersey� is� named�after�Thomas�Edison),� he�moved� to�NewJersey�to�found�Epic�and�the�Light�Bulb�Store�in�1980�(a�light�bulb�manufacturer�withboth�wholesale�and�retail�distribution.)
The Newcandescent InspirationLarry�Birnbaum�said� that�he�owes� the� idea� for� the�Newcandescent� light�bulb� to� themany�customers�of�his�Light�Bulb�Store� located� in�South�Hackensack,�New�Jersey.When�customers�became�aware�of�the�Federal�Law�that�would�effectively�ban�incan-descent�bulbs,�they�started�hording�incandescents�by�buying�in�bulk.�Larry�says,“Weare�all�somewhat�addicted�to�the�incandescent�lightbulb�and�that�soft�warm�glow.�It�isa�very�soothing�and�calming�color�of�light."�Larry�went�on�to�say�that,�"the�inspirationto� continue� to�manufacture� the� long-lasting� (10,000�hours)� rough� serviceNewcandescent� bulb� that� satisfies� all� federal� requirements,� is� simply� the� result� ofwhat�customers�continue�to�want."
