DHSV and Zoos Victoria focus on kids oral healthA new partnership focusing on better dental health for children has been launched by DHSV and Zoos Victoria.

Launched on World Oral Health Day, the new initiative will see children and families engaged through preventative awareness programs where oral health is linked to learning through interaction.

DHSV CEO Dr Deborah Cole said with one in every 1,000 children aged 0 to 4 years hospitalised for treatment of decay, a new approach was needed to tackle the growing epidemic of poor oral health.

“We are extremely proud of our early prevention programs such as Smiles 4 Miles, Healthy Families etc. but we need to do more and this new partnership will allow us to reach even more children across the state that need oral healthcare,” said Deb.

The partnership between DHSV and the Werribee Open Range Zoo will be aligned to the hippo enclosure as hippos require their teeth to be cleaned everyday like humans.

Zoos Victoria CEO Dr Jenny Gray said: “It is terrific to be able to partner with DHSV to engage our visitors about the importance of oral health not just for themselves, but also for our animals.

“Like humans, hippos need to take great care of their teeth and our keepers brush their teeth and gums daily to help keep them clean and healthy.

“Through our partnership with DHSV, we hope to help make this task easier for parents by making children recognise and understand the importance of brushing their teeth regularly.”

Young hippo Lotus recently celebrated her ninth birthday. The volunteers at Werribee Open Range Zoo have custom-made a birthday cake consisting of her favourite fruits and vegetables, including pumpkin, celery and radishes. She ate most of the treats but did allow mum Primrose and sister Tulip to share.

2017 Public Oral Health Innovations ConferenceJourney to Value

POHIC focuses on value-based careMore than 400 participants came together for DHSV’s Public Oral Health Innovations Conference on 31 March.

Held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, the conference theme was ‘journey to value’ which highlighted ways to create a value-based care model for public dentistry in Victoria.

The conference featured the experiences of leaders in health, including

» Jacob Lippa from the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) who introduced the theme of value based care

» Dr Diane Watson, head of the Victorian Agency for Health Information, who explained the need for change

» Melanie Hay from The Victorian Cardiac Clinical Network and Harry Patsamanis,

from The Heart Foundation who spoke about implementing ICHOM’s Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) in heart failure

» Malcolm Passmore from Ramsay Health who spoke about the impact of value based healthcare in his organisation.

The afternoon session also featured 16 innovative projects showcased in a ‘Ted Talk‘ format, providing much food for thought and many opportunities for replication of projects in new settings.

Karen Laing from Kyneton District Health services then drew the focus back to patients with her discussion around building a patient safety culture.

DHSV @ the world health congress Delegates across the world gathered in Melbourne for the World Congress on Public Health in Melbourne on 3 to 7 April.

Held by the World Federation of Public Health Associations, the theme of the 15th congress was ‘voices, vision and action’ in a globalised world.

In partnership with Plenty Valley Community Health, Health Promotion Project Officer, Michelle McNamara, was at the Congress for a digital presentation on Smiles 4 Miles.

Titled “Creating health-promoting environments in preschool communities: Local implementation of the Smiles 4 Miles oral health promotion program”, the presentation highlighted the success of Smiles 4 Miles in Whittlesea.

“It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the work of Smiles 4 Miles at the local level and to highlight our continual focus on partnerships,” Michelle said.

Associate Professor Matthew Hopcraft also presented on a RDHM pilot initiative – “Dental presentations at acute hospital emergency departments”.

The aim of the project was to pilot a model to identify dental patients at the emergency departments of Royal Melbourne Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital and divert them to RDHM. The project team included Matt Hopcraft, Senior Project Officer, Vijay Ishami, and RDHM Executive Director, Melanie van Altena.

The Congress presented over 130 sessions, with a rich diversity of plenaries from world leaders, oral papers, panels,

workshops and posters showcasing new data and learnings about public health from all over the world.

Themes that came through over the course of the Congress included a build in momentum for widespread population initiatives, including a tobacco tax and support for a sugar tax.

Cultural Diversity Week : 18 to 26 MarchThemed ‘Our journey, Our stories’, the 2017 Cultural Diversity Week reflected the journey of Victoria as a multicultural state and to encourage Victorians to share their stories of cultural heritage and identity.

To celebrate the event, DHSV held events to involve staff in learning about new cultures, including

» Taijiquan or the Chinese art of Tai Chi with Tai Chi Australia. Tai Chi is a traditional Chinese culture that promotes health and wellbeing

» Tutira Mai Nga Iwi, a popular traditional New Zealand Maori song and dance

» Ngatanwarr (Welcome) to Wayapa Wuurrk. Wayapa is wellness practice based on ancient Aboriginal knowledge and wisdom.

DHSV Executive Assistant, Martha Bouterey, led in teaching staff Tutira Mai Nga Iwi, a song about togetherness and one of New Zealand’s Maori traditional songs.

She also taught the famous haka, Ka Mate, usually performed by New Zealand rugby teams before a match.

“I wanted to lead the session to show cultural diversity in action and to share something from my heritage,” Martha said.

“I’m not Maori but as a New Zealander, I embrace the culture of our Indigenous people.”

Martha was a competitive performer in a Maori dance group in New Zealand for about nine years.

She has performed in regional and national competitions and also for both the Maori and British queens.

“It was great to get the support of staff and see them enjoy themselves.

“I felt honoured to share this part of my culture with my colleagues.”

Consumer engagement in health and medical research The authors of a research study, ”Integrating consumer engagement in health and medical research – An Australian framework”, describe how quality practice of consumer engagement is in many ways still in its infancy.

They discuss a partnership between the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, Health Consumers Alliance and consumers in evidence generation, with details regarding both process and outcomes of the collaboration.

The report shows an evidence-based, best-practice (consumer partnership) practical framework for consumer and community engagement which centres on four key organisational dimensions, including governance, infrastructure, capacity and advocacy.

Dental truck on display at Avalon International AirshowThe Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) proudly exhibited the Flying Doctor Dental Clinic alongside its other services at the Avalon International Airshow.

The truck, supported by DHSV and ADAVB, was open for inspection to a record crowd with 210,664 visitors to the show over the six days.

Industry and public were able to meet with RFDS staff, learning about the Flying Doctor Dental Clinic and other RFDS services across Australia.

On display with the dental truck was the aeromedical simulator, an RFDS airplane, patient transport vehicle and virtual reality activation.

The dental truck was of great interest as people learned about hidden sugars in drinks through an interactive health literacy resource, as well as potential job opportunities.

Staff and volunteers assisted with the RFDS exhibit covering 53 shifts throughout the duration of the show.

Funds were raised for RFDS Victoria health programs through the sale of merchandise and generous donations from members of the public.

New artwork for Bairnsdale’s closing the gap van Bairnsdale Regional Health’s closing the gap (CTG) dental van has been transformed with new artwork and signage.

The van was featured in the January edition of Word of Mouth and has since then seen 100 patients through outreach services at Lakes Entrance Aboriginal Health Association (LEAHA).

The new artwork was created with advice and direction from the BRHS Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer Bonnie O’Shanassy.

The footprints represent the concept of the Aboriginal person feeling more comfortable coming into the hospital, and that the health service is wanting to help close the gap (a key theme of the CTG dental van).

The artwork creates a visual statement in promoting oral health to the Gippsland Aboriginal community, and is hoped will provide outreach services to the community for many years to come.

Video for dental practitionersAs part of the World Oral Health Day 2017, the Dental Board of Australia launched a video for dental practitioners, ‘An overview of your obligations as a registered dental practitioner’.

While World Oral Health Day 2017 primarily targets patients, dental practitioners play a crucial role in educating patients and in promoting good oral health.

The video features former DHSV Chief Oral Health Advisor Dr Paula Bacchia and Dr Ben Keith from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). It provides an overview of the dental practitioners’ obligations which are described in the Board’s standards, policies, guidelines and code. It highlights some of the key requirements for dental practitioners to maintain registration and provide guidance to the practitioners on expected behaviours.

Bariatric chairDHSV has installed a bariatric chair at RDHM. The hospital saw its first bariatric patient earlier this month.

Get those little bunnies hopping to the dentistDHSV has issued a warning asking families to be vigilant with their oral health during the Easter season which is often celebrated with chocolate and sugary treats.

A staggering half of six year old children presenting to public dental clinics have experienced tooth decay according to data from DHSV.

The most distressing statistic is around 4,500 Victorian children aged 0 to 14 years are hospitalised due to dental conditions.

In the lead up to Easter which is strongly aligned in many cases with over indulging in chocolate and sugary sweets, DHSV is encouraging families to think twice about much how sugar they are consuming.

DHSV dentist, based at RDHM, Dr Sophie Beaumont said 50 per cent of all children

have experienced some tooth decay by the age of 12 and the highest rates of disease occur in disadvantaged populations.

Dental disease accounts for more than 63,000 hospital presentations every year in Australia (behind kidney infection and gastroenteritis), the third highest cause for preventable hospital admissions,” said Sophie.

“Every year in Victoria more than 1,300 children undergo a general an aesthetic at the dental hospital for dental treatment. Most of this dental disease is preventable.

Most of these hospitalisations are for children having general anesthetics for management of dental decay which is totally preventable.

Life of a DARDHM Senior Dental Assistant, Nella Caccamo, has been featured in The Canberra Times. She talks about how study has presented her with opportunities in her oral health career.

DHSV aged care oral health package

DHSV is in the process of developing an oral health aged care package for community dental agencies.

This package was identified as a recommended outcome from the pilot projects DHSV ran in conjunction with select community dental agencies in 2015.

The overall aim of the project is to improve oral health and quality of life of residents living in residential aged care facilities (RACFs).

The package will provide practical assistance to agencies looking to set up a service with RACFs in their catchment area.

Included in this package will be

» catchment area maps » engagement tools such as brochures,

posters and DVDs

» templates for documents such as oral health assessment tool

» oral health care plans » referral forms » a list of specialised aged care oral health

products » training resources to provide education

sessions to staff at RACFs.

Consultations are underway with both clinical and non-clinical staff from agencies that are working with their local aged care facilities to identify the appropriateness of the components of the package and the need to develop additional components such as checklists, etc.

DHSV aims to have the package available on the Extranet by July 2017.

If you would like to be a part of the consultation process or for more information on the aged care oral health package, please contact Vijay Ishami from ART.
