Teacher NotesEssential Tips for All Users

Error code: Google has an anti-spam security glitch where it will sometimes ask users to request access to these pages. You don’t need to do this!!! Try refreshing or closing

out and re-loading the page until you see a screen like the one in the directions below.

Edit Mode-This digital resource must be used by students in edit mode, or the features

will not work.

Links- When links are included, you can right click then “Open Link” to

access the link while in edit mode (Google users can double click on the link

or do the method above). PLEASE check to make sure all links will not be

blocked by your school filter BEFORE beginning. All of the links I include

are school appropriate, but sometimes filters are too overly protective.

View-Students will need to go to the “view” tab then choose a percentage

that works best for them in order to be able to see the text well.

Tools- If an activity needs close reading tools such as highlights or circles,

these are located at the bottom of the document and are moveable and

expandable.

Insert- When prompted to insert an image, video, or shape, students will

need to go to the “insert” tab to do so.

Chunking Assignments- Depending on the needs of your students, you may

need to divide files into smaller sections. You can easily delete slides from

this resource, name that document a new name, then assign the smaller

section. Be sure to follow the steps on the next pages to keep your original,

but if you forget, you can go to “My Purchases” on TpT and download this

e-activity again.

Printing- If you need to print this assignment, make sure to check the box

that says “Scale to Fit Paper” on PowerPoint or “Fit to Page” on Slides. To

print, simply go to File>Print

3. Open the file on your own Google Drive and engage with it while in edit mode.4. Before sharing it with students or making any changes, be sure to make a student copy under a different name so that you will always have the original. To do this, go to FILE> Make a Copy>Then rename the file for students before sharing it with them. Or, follow steps on the next page.

If you want to chunk

assignments as mentioned on the previous page, you will need to make

multiple copies with different

names.

Google Users To force students to make their own copy of the files you are sharing with them, follow these steps: 1. Go to Share and change to “Can View” then “Get Link”

Paste that link in a new tab. Then locate the ending part of the URL.

Use the backspace to delete up to the backslash and replace with the word “Copy”

Hit enter and make sure the new page looks like this. This is what students will see and

will be forced to make a copy if you share this link with them.

Grading Options

Option 1: Have students print final slides and turn in the print out.

Option 2: Have students add their slides to a folder in your Google classroom then use the comment function on Google slides to add remarks on their submissions.

Option 3: Have students submit their assignment to Turnitin. Though Turnitin isn’t free, if you school has an account already, then this method might be worth testing out. I like it because it’s easy to add in quick marks, voice comments, and rubric-scored grades. This program accepts Google Drive submissions.

Option 4: Use a Google add-on. See this article for a description.

Microsoft Users How to get the assignment to your students.

For Microsoft users, there are a number of options, but I haven’t decided which is the easiest

for you and your students (and myself!). So, I will give all of the options I have come up with.

Option 1: Email students the plain, desktop PowerPoint file that you just downloaded. In the email, they will hopefully see an option that looks like this:

Then, this file will go to their own OneDrive account. They will retrieve it by going to their waffle in the corner, selecting their OneDrive, and finding the document under “Email attachments.” When they click on the file they just uploaded to OneDrive, it will open in PowerPoint Online.

Microsoft Users Option 2: If you are a Classroom OneNote user, put the file attachment (NOT the File Printout) in your content library of your Classroom OneNote.

Students can then download the file (or open it in their OneDrive if that is an option), do the interactive reading in edit mode, and then “print” the finished file to their own notebook under the tab that you indicate (I have a “homework tab” set up in the student notebooks for this purpose).

Their print out will look like this. You can click in each student’s notebook to grade their work.

Page 10: e Activity - Weebly · Option 2: If you are a Classroom OneNote user, put the file attachment (NOT the File Printout) in your content library of your Classroom OneNote. Students can

Microsoft Users Option 3: If the “open in OneDrive” option isn’t available in the email you send students, or if you have a different way to getting the PowerPoint file to them (such as the Classroom Notebook method), and you want you students to work in the Online version of PowerPoint (which I recommend for easier reading), then students will need to download the file on their device then upload the file to their own OneDrive account. To do this, students will need to open their OneDrive account then click upload.

After they click upload, students will

need to locate their downloaded

PowerPoint file and upload it their

OneDrive.

***Note***Even though students can read the PowerPoint on the desktop version rather going through these steps, it is easier to read on the online version. However, if you do want them to do the activity on the desktop version, then make sure they use the down arrow to read the pages rather than the scroll. The scroll will switch the slides before they read the bottom of it.

Microsoft Users Option 4: If you try to share your Online file straight from your OneDrive, be sure click “can view” rather than “can edit.” The “can edit” one will sync changes with everyone you shared it with. This will give you a link to share. Students will then need to download the PowerPoint in order to work with it in edit mode. They can upload it to their own OneDrive if they wish to use the Online PowerPoint.

WARNING: I have spoken with someone who has successfully utilized the Office 365 groups as a way to share files with students. However, I have NOT been able use this feature successfully. It may be because of different versions of Microsoft, but anything I put into my group can be edited, but the edits SYNC (even when I use the “Can view only” setting). If you try this method, please test it out yourself before assigning it to all students.

Microsoft Users Grading Options

Option 1: Have students print their file and turn it into you. Option 2: Have students “print” their file to their Classroom OneNote. If they are working in the online version, then they will need to “Print to PDF” first. Then, they will print the PDF to their OneNote.

You will be able to see it and grade from their notebooks. You view will be like this:

If they are working straight from a desktop PowerPoint (not the online version ), they can go straight to print then “Print to OneNote”

Option 3: If you already have an Office 365 Group set up for your classes, make an assignment folder in your Office 365 group. Follow the directions on the previous page if you are using the online PowerPoint, but instead of having them print their PDF, they will save it to their computer then submit to the group folder that you created. However, you won’t be able to do any marks or make any comments on their file if you do this method unless you have a pro version of Adobe. If you are using the desktop version of PowerPoint (or if you have your students to “open in PowerPoint” from the online version then save to their computer), have students upload their finished assignment to this same folder. You can then make comments right on the PowerPoint by going to Insert>Comment. You can also use Office Mix add on to make voice comments.

Option 4: Have students submit their assignment to Turnitin. Though Turnitin isn’t free, if you school has an account already, then I HIGHLY recommend this option. It will save you a ton of time because you can add quick marks, comments, or voice comments to each submission. It does accept PowerPoint files.

3. This will bring you to a digital notebook. If you are a Google School with Canvas integration, you can put your new file link in the assignment box or follow the Google instructions in this document. Skip ahead to make sure you have the assignment submission set up correctly. If you aren’t a Google integrated Canvas user, continue reading. 4. Non-Google users, go to File >Download as> Microsoft PowerPoint

upload the file you downloaded. Your classroom Canvas must be set

to PRIVATE. You are NOT allowed to make this a searchable lesson.

Then, go to assignment and create a new assignment. You will add the downloaded file to the assignment.

type to “Online” and “File Uploads”

Once students download their file and finish it, they will need to save it and upload their final to the submission box. Please advise students that this e-activity is easier to read in an online format such as PowerPoint

Online via Office 365 or Google slides (in my opinion). They can upload this file to one of those before beginning if they desire. Once they finish the assignment, save it (or download it if working in an online version) as

a PowerPoint file, and upload the file, it will look like this for grading:
