Joys and SorrowsReflections by Pablo Casals
And what do we teach our children in school? We teach them that two and two make four And that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach them what they are?We should say to each of them:You are a marvel! You are unique. In all the worldthere is no other child exactly like you.In the millions of years that have passed there has never been another child like you.And look at your body - what a wonder it is!Your legs, your arms, your cunning fingers, the way you move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything.Yes you are a marvel! And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is like you a marvel? You must cherish one another. You must work... we all must work... to make this world worthy of its children.

Dr. Joyce McPeake Robinson
Nothing is ours outright, as a gift; we have to perform for ourselves
even those of our actions which seem most passive. The hum ble Sancho
Panza kept suggesting this on all occasions, by repeating his proverb:
“If they give you the cow, you have to carry the rope.” All we are given
is possibilities—to make ourselves one thing or another.
-Jose Ortega y Gasset

trouble with me, but I think
they enjoyed it!
You never lose by loving. You always
lose by holding back.

looking back at my laughter
would make me cry.

Even when intended it is difficult not to give in to the temptation of thanl<ing everyone who influenced my character throughout this very short yet important period of life. However,I shall prefer to thank the “three women” who had the most effect on my life: (quoting Bulgakov) Blood, in the image of my mother. Pride, derived from my blood, and Passion for my abilities, as well as ambition, in the face of all those who possessed the power to compliment me on my talent accordingly-encouraging me to seek further approval through striving for unattainable perfection.
E.i<obahidze
PS To my mother:There are very few people whom I value as much as myself; I bow to your victory of attaining the love and support I shall be always ready to offer you...Let’s just hope that what i offer now, will be remotely sufficient, as your charms are in power as never before.

Dear Darius, our peacemaker,
When you started kindergarten you asked “Is there
such a thing as night school because I’d like to have
my days free.”
Sorry we cramped your style, but even you will have to admit it was worth the concession!
Congratulations on making it through those 4 years of sometimes seemingly endless days (Thanks, IVIr.
Samuels!) and coming out into the light.
Anglo, Dwight, great friends and memories are yoursforever.
May the future be as welcoming for you.

The 1,000 Year CollageNoah, W ill and I wanted to create a yearbook
cover and divider pages that made a statement about
the passing o f the millennium. This, after all, w ill be
the last D wight yearbook cover o f the century and
the m illennium so w e wanted it to be special. We
decided to use a collage (after Robert Rauschenberg)
because the layered nature o f collage seem ed most
suited to capturing the enormous expanse o f time and
history. We used varied techniques and visual docu
ments (drawing, painting, photos and diagrams) to
reinforce the concept o f time passage.
On the front cover Vermeer’s
“Astronomer” sym bolizes the power o f introspection
and expresses hope for healing the problems o f our
world. He encourages us to search for what is good
and pushes us to understand what is unknown.
On the back cover and the inside dividers we
tried to include im ages from the history o f the m il
lennium which were important and powerful: the
Renaissance, inventions, great men and women,
events, popular culture, war, etc... We wanted this
m essage to be a contribution to our class and our
school, our nation and our world.
-Colleen Barry
