  • PROLOGUE

Seniors, with a few exceptions, have given the glory and hard work of publishing this book to their humbler Juniors and Underclassmen. W e have accepted their challenge. W e hope that, as they peruse this book, they will appreciate our efforts. To the Seniors of Dwight, the Scroll wishes them all success and happiness in their future endeavors. To the school, we pledge our sincere devotion!

  • THE WORLD YOU FACE

It is with considerable uncertainty as to the problems that lie immediately ahead of you that I send this year's class of seniors and post-graduates on their way to the colleges or service academies of their choice.

Some of you may have your education interrupted by a period of military service, but even if you are so fortunate as to finish your college work without interruption, the world you face will still not have resolved all of its problems. To look ahead with confidence and self assurance, each of you will be called upon to have the courage of a Daniel or David. How well you meet the problems you will face will depend in large measure upon the character, self-discipline and determination which we have tried, at Dwight, to give you in addition to the completion of your academic work.

I have confidence that you will meet your obligations with fortimde and determination and that you will make this world a better place in which to live.

  • DEDICATION

This year the members of the Dwight Scroll wish to honor a member of the faculty who has exuded interest, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship. Although we have not called on him this year, we do remember how willing he was to play the pianofor our assemblies. W e feel that he loves Dwight and us; therefore we are pleasedto wish him a long and happy life with us at Dwight.

Ail hail to you, Mr. Huxry!

  • W IN T O N L. MILLER, JR.

Our headmaster is one of the gentlest, kindest, most understanding men a of prep-school age could want to meet. No complaint is too small to warrant full consideration; no whim or fancy is too little to get his cooperation.

All in all, Mr. Miller is a great "guy.

  • Jean-Jacques Arling New York University University of Chicago Sorbonne

"Jay, as we call him, is one of our favorite teachers. His wit and humor baffie us. His profundity and knowledge astound us. One swell guy!

Irving S. Asch University of Minnesota

Mr. Asch is a new member of the English Department. When vociferations from 3A penetrate the air, we know the dumbest of us is bound to be "larnin, or that the disgruntled are grumbling. Hes our psychologist!

  • John Drew Colt Yale University

Another new member of the faculty is Mr. Colt. He keps us in tow during our study halls; he coaches us in wrestling, tennis, ping-pong and baseball. W atching him take care of our basketball elite, wed say he is nursemaid de luxe!

    Henry L. Crehan Harvard University

Mr. Crehan is our French teacher and the ringer of the bells. Sometimes he rings the bell so hard, we wonder if it is that our reaction to French hasnt the ring it should..

    Long live the "Doc!

  • Theodore Jones University of London

Mr. Jones is tiie epitome of decorum. He conducts his classes astutely assuming that we are students. How we have let him down!

Otis B. Hurry Syracuse UniversityMr. Hurry, to whom we have dedicated our book, is a past master at the slide rule. He vibrates enthusiasm in sines and cosines. One great crusader!

    *1^

  • Robert Liebler New York University

Mr. Liebler is our good basicetball coach. Under his guidance we reached the semifinals in our league. He is a sincere fellow and a good sport!

Charles W. Myron New York University

Mr. Myron is the stickler of the faculty. He believes in his sciencesand in the essential study of our native tongue. Hes all Republican!

  • William C. Toomey St. Johns University Seton Hall

Mr. Toomey is another new member of our faculty. He teaches history; he directs the speech classes; and he does advise the Forensic League. His quiet humor baffles us!

  • Doris B. Post Columbia University

Mrs. Post is a gem. She helps us to get our transcripts out; she keeps us on an even keel as far as attendance is concerned. Our own little Dwight F. B. I.!

    Helen E. Harms Franklin Institute

Miss Harms is the keeper of the keys, the seller of the books, and the friend of most of us delinquents. Hue we need all Heaven to help us if she is aroused! A great gal and a very good secretary!
