A Commitment Worth TakingDwenger is blessed to have a world-class faculty, devoted to teaching and connecting with

students well beyond the classroom walls as they serve as coaches, advisors, and moderators. Over half of our faculty are Bishop Dwenger alumni, which creates a unique, warm and supportive community. The faculty is composed of great teachers, but also of musicians, poets, economists and environmentalists, mathematicians and marathon runners. Our students benefit from a group of well-versed, well-rounded Dwenger teachers and staff. Their experiences enrich the lives of the students by giving testimony to creative and better ways to bring together their academic and spiritual formation.

Consistent exposure to contemporary global issues leads to discussions and new ideas on how we can bring to life what we learn in order to help others. Starting this past year, Bishop Dwenger High School has made a 3-year commitment to serve Catholic Relief Services in improving the lives of children around the world. This commitment comes with an all-important theme that is broad, but critical, to the education of a well-rounded young person and even, some might claim, to a more peaceful global future: Empathy.

We hear these words all the time—global citizens, global perspectives, global understanding. So in addition to our students’ grasp of local needs, they are also developing an appreciation of the importance of community service taking place globally. Some may have even seen these problems first hand and are eager to share with their classmates and teachers what they’ve witnessed. Our community often hears about orphans in Brazil, children without schools in Africa, people suffering because of earthquakes and hurricanes, struggling with illnesses like AIDS, or the lack of clean drinking water—people are in need all over the world. Our students are gaining an awareness of humanitarian issues and problems around the world, and are developing the passion to help solve them. Regardless of where their passion originates, we help students channel their generous energy into clubs, fundraising events, and school-sponsored trips.

While discouraging at times, the situation is anything but bleak: we are making great progress facing, adapting to, and even creating change and the trajectory is good. Bishop Dwenger High School has come far in the past 50 years, and our current student body better reflects the make-up of the country and the world. This demographic broadening has gradually, but unmistakably, been followed by an acceptance of difference greater than in the previous generations. This change has been encouraging to witness, yet we remain a work in progress. Although stepping in the right direction, we need to move beyond diversity “not being a problem.” This is a higher order skill, as it requires stepping outside oneself to understand how others think and

feel especially when that differs from one’s own experience. Familiarity and comfort are rarely the best conditions for growth; rather, it is the outreach and even the occasional friction that enriches our understanding of others.

In this issue of the Dwenger Times, you will be inspired by our own Saints who have stepped outside of their comfort zone, and eventually come to understand those who come from much different backgrounds in order to help improve their lives.

“Hail the Cross, Our Only Hope”Have you ever heard or seen something so wonderful that you had to share it with others? This is a perfect example! A father of a recent

graduate shared some beautiful comments about the Dwenger experience with our administration. His words touched the hearts of so many of us that we asked him if we could share them with you. These amazing people, who have sacrificed much to provide a Catholic education for their children, were happy to share the message, but too humble to share their name.

“Words simply cannot express our journey through the halls of Bishop Dwenger. In fact it began years earlier when Central Catholic closed and I transferred to Dwenger and met my wife in those halls. That was back in the 70’s. Forty years later, six of our children have graduated, left the nest and are creating their own paths to heaven. Our youngest is attending Holy Cross College at Notre Dame. The school’s motto is “AVE CRUX SPES UNICA” which means “Hail the Cross, Our Only Hope”. This is a beautiful reminder of what the Bishop Dwenger pillars are and how we have shared them with the Dwenger family community. More importantly is how we need to live with the cross daily. We simply need to remember we are not on our own and the cross helps us do just that. God Bless!”

In this time, when our Faith and our principles are continually being challenged in the secular world, what a beautiful message this is to share; we are not alone, “If God is for us, who is against us? (Romans 8:31). This is one of the many reasons the Dwenger experience is so important for the youth of today. Our students surrounded by the cross, in the Chapel and classroom, are truly becoming Citizens of Two Worlds. In this issue, you will read about the accomplishments of our students and alumni and we hope that you realize what an invaluable investment you make when you support Bishop Dwenger High School.

Our motto for N’awlins Saints- in the French Quarter was “laissez le bon temps rouler” and that’s exactly what happened; we let the good times roll!

Our chairs, Julianne and Buck Toenges, presented principal, Jason Schiffli with a check at our May Crowning in the amount of $525,775- wow! It was a record year and we continue to be blessed by the commitment of our Dwenger Family to this special event. From the thousands of hours of work from our countless volunteers, to the thousands of dollars from our generous donors, Saints Alive! is an amazing experience that benefits each and every student and family at Bishop Dwenger High School!

We extend our deepest gratitude to all of you who make Saints Alive! so very successful; our volunteers, committee chairs, parents, students, vendors, faculty, and staff, all of you who so selflessly share your time, talent and treasure with us! It is the awesome combination of your enthusiasm, passion and commitment that generates this impressive revenue for our school. Let us share with you a little of the excitement:

Jim Casaburo and Casa Restaurants impressed the crowd of 500 guests with a delicious array of all the amazing tastes of New Orleans at our Preview Night! Thanks for a spectacular evening; we are so appreciative of your most generous donation of food and wine for the night! The winner of the $1,500 prize package for the Preview Night Treasure Chest was Shari Casaburo – another perfect example of “in giving you receive!”At our Gala Dinner and Auction, a total of 560 guests joined us for a lovely dinner catered by Catablu – thank you to Maureen and Mike Catalogna and their staff. Special thanks to Andy Lebamoff of Cap n’ Cork for providing the cocktails for the evening! We appreciate Charleston Auctioneers for their services!Bishop Kevin Rhoades got the paddles going and raised $249,000 for the Tuition Assistance Fund!Our Blue and Gold Raffle Ticket Winners were:

In the fall of 1987 Nick Schenkel and Susan Scheyer were paired up as lab partners in Honors Physics, solely based on an alphabetic seating chart. The two became friends and would help each other with physics and the other classes they had in common during their senior year. Upon graduation, Nick attended Notre Dame and Susan attended Indiana University in Fort Wayne and their paths did not cross again. That is, until 1994, when they had a brief exchange at Mass one Sunday. But in 1995, at the Saints Alive! preview party, the two of them re-connected. They began dating that spring and were married in February of 1998. This fall Nick and Susan will join their classmates from the class of 1988 at their 25th class reunion at Pine Valley Country Club.

The couple have three children – Savannah, Morgan and Joseph who attend St. Jude Catholic School. Nick is employed at Superior Auto and manages the company’s real estate. Susan returned to Bishop Dwenger in July of 2012, working in the Business Office and also handles the logistics for Saints Alive! Their oldest daughter, Savannah, will join Susan at Dwenger in the fall of 2014 and graduate in 2018 just 30 years after her parents graduated.

Once a Saint, Always a Saint!

Bishop Dwenger’s motto – “Citizens of Two Worlds” – has always seemed to me to be the perfect summation of the goal of the Christian life, a state of being we are to strive constantly to attain. This thought struck me in a particular way this spring when my job took me to Rome for three weeks to coordinate media for Cardinal Donald Wuerl, one of the participants in the Conclave that would elect the new pope. The Eternal City is one of the few places in the world where heaven and earth, the spiritual and the secular, come face to face.

I had been to this world capital before as a teenager – in fact, as part of a school-sponsored trip in the summer before my junior year at Bishop Dwenger – but I was there as a tourist then. This more recent trip, while technically for work, felt more like a pilgrimage, one that culminated in my standing in Saint Peter’s Square when the white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel and the Cardinal Deacon announced, “Habemus Papam!” (“We have a pope!”)

The weeks leading up to that event provided occasional opportunities to see the sights in this city which had played such a central role in the history of humanity and especially Christianity. Although the popular tourist attractions – Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps, etc. – were interesting, it was the religious sites that reinforced the purpose of my visit and made the papal election night all the more meaningful.

On my first evening in Rome, I attended Mass at Saint Peter’s Basilica, the greatest church in all of Christendom, which is built over the grave of our first pope. I also received the Sacrament of Reconciliation from an English-speaking priest who was on hand to hear confessions. Once he had administered absolution, he reached around the wooden partition of the confessional which stood in a side aisle of the basilica and handed me a prayer card. On the back of the card was the Prayer of Saint Francis. This took place three weeks

before the election of Pope Francis and would later serve as a reminder of God’s presence on this journey of faith.

Rome is home to the remains of numerous saints, but Saint Catherine of Siena, whose name I took as my Confirmation name, has had particular meaning for me since I was young. Saint Catherine’s body is buried under the altar in the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva on a little piazza behind the Pantheon. As I knelt before the tomb of this Doctor of the Church who had played such a pivotal role in the history of Catholicism, I found myself talking to her like a fellow traveler, praying for her guidance in my work and her intercession in the health matter of a loved one. Before I left Rome, I learned that request had been answered – my family member had been cured in a miraculous way. Was Saint Catherine behind this inexplicable healing? The answer to that question depends on whether one views it through the eyes of this world, or the eyes of faith.

A special characteristic of pilgrimages, whether they involve foreign travel or simply an interior journey, is a focus on spiritual reflection. While sitting in the Basilica of Saint JohnLateran,theoldestChristianchurchinRome,Ithoughtabout the unlikely road that had brought me to this city at such a historic time. Despite being a “cradle Catholic” and

a graduate of Catholic schools, I never imagined my career path would lead me to work for the Church. After graduating from college, I went to work in Washington, D.C., for what I expected to be one year. As the old adage goes, though, “Man plans, God laughs.” More than 20 years later, after serving

in senior positions in the United States Congress, the White House and the private sector – seemingly the pinnacle of any career – an opportunity to help spread the Gospel message in what Blessed John Paul II called the “New Evangelization” came out of the blue at a time when I was struggling to discern God’s purpose for the next half of my life.

And so, on the evening of March 13, I found myself standing in the rain in Saint Peter’s Square waiting for the white smoke that would

signal the election of Pope Francis. I have trouble imagining how any future events in my life will top that moment.

I am currently serving a year term with AmeriCorps through the American Red Cross—where I am the Community Outreach Coordinator. I lead a team of volunteers and give preparedness presentations in the community, as well as design presentations for the future and chapter brochures. I handle all social media posts for the chapter, and I author our blog as well which also features a fictional mini-series I created about the story of a young volunteer who finds herself in the middle of a disaster.

As part of AmeriCorps, I also have certain responsibilities to assist the chapter, such as being a caseworker on the Single Family Disaster Fire team, as well as being a Disaster Services course instructor. My time with AmeriCorps and the Red Cross has opened my heart to the thing I really love— simply, helping others— and I have my teachers and mentors at Bishop Dwenger to thank for instilling that desire within me.

I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Madagascar as a Health Volunteer from September 2006 - December 2008. I had a sense of serving based on my faith and education; also, I wanted to learn another language, I wanted experience working in another culture, and I wanted to develop more patience. It was a great way to get a “kick in the behind” from reality after living a nice life as a college student in the bubble of my campus. From this experience, I learned that you really cannot move mountains very quickly and that you really must focus on the small victories. Just like Mother Teresa said, “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” Overall, the experience provided some of the worst times of my life and some of the best times. I am still learning from my experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer in my everyday life, and professional life, as a law clerk and future lawyer. I would like to work as a Prosecutor or Public Defender. I know those may seem at odds, but they both uphold constitutional guarantees that we all have and it would be an honor to serve the public in either of those lights.

In 2008 and 2009, I had the opportunity to volunteer in South America for about eight months. The organization I was working with is called Amanecer, which runs nine houses to serve a myriad of needs across varying demographics, from a women’s shelter, to a trade school, a house for infants, and orphanages for several age groups. In addition to basic needs, Amanecer also provides the education and preparation necessary to make sure that the children they serve are afforded the best possible opportunity to find quality employment. It was a very formative experience for me and I continue to remain in contact with those still at Casa Nazareth and am sponsoring one of the boys at Amanecer. I currently work as a Physician and Associate Medical Director for a group of Community Health Centers in Indianapolis that take care of under-served patients. Since 2000, I have been blessed with the opportunity to make nine separate trips to Montero, Bolivia for medical mission trips there. Our team has been involved with the care of sick, malnourished and special needs children as well as establishing an ongoing program to care for adults with diabetes.

Adult Volunteers Needed Locally:Being a “Citizen of Two Worlds” never stops. The Ave Maria

House, in Fort Wayne, a homeless day shelter and is in need of daytime volunteers. A ministry of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fort Wayne, the Ave Maria House serves customers Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 432 Madison Avenue. Patrons enjoy a home atmosphere where they may have a coffee, snack, take a shower, do a load of laundry, make or receive a phone call, pick up mail, as well as relax in community with volunteers and peers. Volunteers socialize with patrons, assist with coffee and snacks, receive donations, and do some cleaning. Those interested, please contact Dottie Carpenter, Director at 260-705-1690.

Saints Around the Globe Catholic Relief Services iNeighbor Program Comes to Bishop Dwenger

During the 2012-2013 school year, Bishop Dwenger entered into partnership with Catholic Relief Services for a three year commitment to global solidarity through the iNeighbor Schools Program. Catholic Relief Services works in 100 countries around the world. Started by the US Catholic Bishops, Catholic Relief Services began in 1943 settling war refugees in Europe. Once Europe regained stability, the agency sought to reach out to other countriesinAfrica,Asia,andLatinAmerica.Now,CRSrepresentsthe United States Catholic Church in international development and relief efforts.

Early in the school year, Dwenger faculty and staff participated in a CRS-facilitated full-day workshop led by staff from CRS. The workshop helped our staff learn about the work of CRS in their care for orphans and vulnerable children around the world. This workshop was interactive and formulated to fit our school, providing the opportunity for our school’s staff to share and learn about the global work of the Church and CRS as wells as to share their expertise as teachers and staff while planning for our school’s solidarity week.

Bishop Dwenger designated a week in April to focus on education and action around the work of CRS. During the Global Neighbor Week, committees led by faculty and staff, along with senior students, implemented the ideas and plans that they had developed throughout the school year. During the week, each homeroom class participated in mini-lessons that focused on one nation where CRS works. The students and teachers in those rooms learned about the general socio-economic situation of that nation and the role of CRS in that nation. Each class developed a poster displaying their nation and a national flag designed with the handprints of class members. The week culminated with an all school assembly focused on the work of Catholic Relief Services and personal responsibility for works of justice.

This school year, our faculty and staff will again participate in a workshop provided by CRS to guide year two, when we will focus specifically on the plight of orphans and vulnerable children around the world. So many children around the world have been left orphaned by HIV and AIDS, or by natural disasters. As an iNeighbor school, members of the Bishop Dwenger community will be a part of the life-saving work of CRS that continues to help children all around the world who are the most in need. I recently returned from Nicaragua, where I was a Jesuit Volunteer for two years. I lived in an intentional community with four other volunteers and as a part of our program, we made a commitment to living simply, discussing and practicing spirituality and working toward social justice. My work site was a Fe y Alegria (Faith and Joy) school where I taught English to students from pre-school through sixth grade, assisted with phys ed classes, and participated in parades and other school events. I had known for a long time that I had wanted to be a part of an international volunteer program, primarily because I am fascinated by other cultures, but also because I believe that there is so much I (and we) can learn from the way others live. The people of Nicaragua are unbelievably warm, hospitable, and patient. There is such a strong sense of community there: neighbors sitting outside and visiting, watching their children play soccer in the dusty streets, inviting strangers like me to join them. My time in Nicaragua was filled with challenges of learning Spanish, missing home, adapting to a new culture, figuring out thebussystem,tonameafew.Yet,Iformeddeeprelationshipswith my co-workers and friends who kindly listened to me as I struggled to express myself in Spanish, with my community mates who supported me and encouraged me when we all faced the harsh realities of poverty, and with my students who would daily run up to me and yell, “Profe, profe!” (“Teacher, Teacher!”) and overwhelm me with their smiles and hugs. I went with hopes to teach and serve the people of Nicaragua, but in fact, the people of Nicaragua taught and served me in ways that I cannot explain. I am so grateful for the opportunity I had and know that this journey of learning and accompaniment will continue wherever I go.

Flying High!Kevin Fogler ’07

Shortly after graduating from BDHS in 2007, I found myself in a completely foreign environment - basic military training. In the spring of my senior year, the U.S. Air Force Academy football program recruited and signed me to play as a wide receiver. Being the first in my family to enter the service, I did not fully understand the commitment I had signed up for, but I adjusted quickly to a new lifestyle. My four years at the Academy were filled with 12-14 hour days of academics, football, and military training. In retrospect, I can’t thank Dwenger’s curriculum and faculty enough for preparing me to excel in one of the most challenging undergraduate degrees in the country. I was blessed to be able to enjoy playing 4 years of football, going to bowl games each year, and being a member of one of the winningest classes in Academy football history.

I may not have entered the Academy fully focused on the service aspect post graduation, but after a couple years of maturity, my excitement and desire to serve our great nation grew exponentially. The spring of my junior year I was accepted into SUPT, specialized undergraduate pilot training. Fortunately, I was assigned to Columbus AFB, MS with several of my good buddies from the football team. I completed Initial Flight Screening in August 2011 and

started flying the T-6A at Columbus AFB in September. After five months of 12 hour days flying the T-6, I was one of eight guys in my class of 30 selected to continue my training in the T-38C Talon. This aircraft and flying syllabus is designed to train pilots for fighter and bomber aircraft. The six month program focused on the importance of formation flying, (flying in relation to another jet). I graduated SUPT as a newly rated Air Force pilot in November 2012 assigned to fly the F-15E Strike Eagle.

The past 6 years of my life have been exciting, stressful, and every emotion in between. I’m thankful I have been able to lean on my faith in all the highs and lows of my journey. Every step has been somewhat out of my hands, which brings anxiety yet trust, knowing God controls the plans for my life. I’ve been blessed with incredibly faithful family and friends who have been unwavering in their support. I can say confidently my experience at BDHS prepared me for USAFA, and college football prepared me for SUPT. I expect this progression will only continue and am so grateful for those who have been by my side in any and every effort along the way. The future holds many challenges; I am excited to take those challenges on serving

in our US Air Force.

There’s an App for That! Megan Oberhausen Swaim ‘04

When Bishop Rhoades asked us to sit down and brainstorm some ideas for diocesan initiatives for the “YearofFaith,”mycolleaguesintheSecretariatforEvangelizationandSpecialMinistriesandIhadnoideawhat an adventure we were about to embark on. We had just been reading a fantastic book, “The Church and New Media” (by the incredible Brandon Vogt, OSV) and were convinced that whatever we were going to do, we needed to utilize New Media and do something big for the New Evangelization. Someone blurted out,“Howaboutanapp?”and“MyYearofFaith”wasborn.

We had just about a year from that initial meeting to the actual launch – and it went so quickly! There were many obstacles – and more than once we could have decided it was too much – but each time the Holy Spirit promptly and swiftly removed whatever was blocking our way.

One of the biggest surprises has been the number of incredible, talented and well-known authors, bloggers and speakers willing to contribute their gifts and talents with us. When I send out an invitation asking someone to contribute to the blog, I always say a quick prayer to the Holy Spirit before I hit “send.” It’s so humbling when I receive a quick reply with an enthusiastic “yes!” The Holy Spirit has gathered us an incredible network of new friends and partners in evangelization.It’sbeenanincredibleblessingtohearandreadpeople’sresponsestotheposts.“MyYearofFaith”

When it comes to Animation, he doesn’t Monkey AroundZach Parrish ‘03

After graduating from Dwenger, I attended the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). I graduated with my Bachelors of Fine Arts, with Animation as my major area of study. During my last semester at SCAD, I was a student with an online school for animation called Animation Mentor and was also hired for an Apprenticeship program at Rhythm&HuesStudios.Thenthingsstartedtomoveveryquickly:graduationonJune2nd,flewtoLosAngeles

onJune3rd,andstartedworkatR&Honthefourth!Afteronemonthintheapprenticeprogram, I was hired as a Junior Animator for “Alvin and the Chipmunks.” While there, I also continued my studies at Animation Mentor. During my one and half years at Rhythm&Hues,Ialsoenjoyedworkingon“TheIncredibleHulk,”“TheMummy3,”“Aliens in the Attic,” and “The Vampire’s Assistant.”

My work from Animation Mentor, a more substantial resume, and demo reel, all lead to a position to work on one of my childhood favorite stories, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” through Sony Pictures Animation in Culver City, CA. While at Sony and working on Tim Burton’s, “Alice in Wonderland,” I heard that Disney Animation was hiring for a movie about Rapunzel. Knowing that one of my animation idols, Glen Keane, was supervising animation on the film, I immediately applied.

I was fortunate enough to lock down the last spot on the show and moved to Disney Animation in Burbank, CA in January of 2010. After finishing “Tangled,”Iworkedon“PrepandLanding2”beforereceivingapromotiontobeanAnimationSupervisoron“Wreck-ItRalph.”AsacharacterleadforKing Candy in “Wreck-It Ralph,” my most notable scenes from my time at Disney would include King Candy’s introduction in Ralph, and the conversation between Ralph and Gene in the penthouse. I have been fortunate to do a variety of shots, styles, emotions, and actions.

Currently, I am the Head of Animation on Disney’s 2014 release, “Big Hero 6” and have responsibility for a crew of around 70 animators. I feel blessed to love what I do! Although I might not have realized it at the time, every class at Bishop Dwenger provided some lesson, even if it wasn’t the one they intended to teach me. In looking back, I see that I learned problem solving skills; and more than just formulas, I learned critical thinking. Although not academic, I also learned independence; self-motivation, and maturity. I learned all of these things while also being constantly reminded to be a good person. It is the balance of all of those things that has always stuck with me!

Current research in nanotechnology is expected to greatly impact our way of living. Such studies can impact medicine, medical diagnostics, cosmetics, and many other areas that affect us every day. Dr. Joseph Irudayaraj’s research group at Purdue is doing just that. His research group specializes intreatingcancerwithgoldnanoparticles,buthasrecentlyaddedZincOxidenanoparticlestohislist.ZincOxideisacknowledgedforitsbiologicalapplications in luminescence tagging, drug delivery, and cell imaging. Our specificareaofresearchinvolvedattachingthiolatedDNAtoZincOxidenanoparticles that could then be used as a luminescent tag. The presence of this luminescent tag would fluoresce stronger than the fluorescence of other tissues within the cell that is automatically given off when being imaged. This would verify the presence of complimentary DNA within the cell and the uptakeoftheZincOxidenanoparticlebythatcell.ByattachingDNAtosuchparticles, these particles can then be utilized in other biological applications such as a possible treatment for cancer or drug delivery.

It’s funny, I don’t ever remember being told that I was adopted, I just always remember knowing. I was told by my parents, Rick and Sally Ley; they had tried to have a baby and when they couldn’t, they decided to adopt. They made it onto a list and were told it could take two years before a child would be available. Less than two weeks later, they were notified by Catholic Charities that there was a baby for them. My grandmother died eight days before I was born so, according to my parents, “she died, went to heaven and picked out the prettiest baby and sent me down to them.” What little girl wouldn’t buy that story, hook line and sinker?

Amazingly, a few months later my mom found out she was pregnant! Nine months later, my sister Sarah was born, starting a string of eight siblings. God does have a great sense of humor! I grew up in a house full of siblings with all the craziness and fun that goes with it! I always felt just as much a part of our family as the rest of the “biological” children. Along with my sister, I have four brothers and three more sisters. I often wondered what my life would be like if my biological mother had made a different “choice” or if my parents weren’t open to the gift of adoption.

Most of my life, like most adoptees I’m sure, I was a bit curious about where I came from and what the circumstances were behind my biological mother’s decision. But for the sake of not disrupting her life or upsetting my mom and dad, I chose not to pursue a reunion. But in the summer of 2012, an almost miraculous series of events occurred. I was able to write my birth mother a letter, something I have always wanted to do, to thank her for the gift of life and for making the difficult decision to continue her pregnancy. I have felt such deep gratitude knowing what an incredible sacrifice it must have been to give me up for adoption

and giving me a chance for an incredible life. A life of being raised Catholic, having great parents, and a house full of siblings. I also had the privilege of attending Bishop Dwenger High School where I met my husband, Joe. He is a wonderful Catholic man and a great father to our 11 children, one of whom we adopted

from Russia. My “biological” mother and I

exchanged letters which then led to a beautiful reunion. On September 1, 2012, I got to meet my birth mother, Marcy. At 19, Marcy was a single working woman and became pregnant unexpectedly. As much as she loved me and wanted to keep me she was already having difficulties supporting herself. Without her family and friends knowing, she endured the pregnancy alone and unsupported. Even through the hardest of circumstances she never stopped believing that every life is valuable and precious. She found the strength to make the choice to give me the best opportunity she could. She gave me the gift of a mother AND a father. After all these years of not knowing what ever became of me, SHE has received the gift of seeing the fruits of her decision in the wonderful and blessed life I have lived. Marcy was never blessed with more children and now has something she never thought she’d get to have, a daughter and son-in-law and eleven grandchildren.

Nothing can ever compare to the love and respect I have for my mom and dad, but God has given me the capacity to love and respect the woman who has given birth to me. Marcy and I now enjoy a very special relationship with the full blessing

of my mom and dad. Marcy and her husband Mike are now part of our family and I am part of hers. I am truly amazed how an unselfish decision made over 42 years ago can have such an incredible impact on so many lives.

Lastfall,wehonoredsomeofBishopDwenger’s finest at our Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. It was a wonderful evening to celebrate and reminisce with our inductees and their family and friends.

Alumna of the Year - Angela Flood ’85 As a Dwenger Saint, Angela was the

Valedictorian of her class, served as both the Key Club President and Senior Class President, and was also a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation, Angela attended the University of Notre Dame where she received her B.A. degree. In May of 2011, Angela accepted her current position as Secretary for Communications for the Archdiocese of Washington. In this role, she leads the Archdiocese’s newly created Secretariat for Communications, which includes the Office of Media and Public Relations; the Office of Digital Media; and Carroll Publishing, which produces the Catholic Standard and El Pregonero newspapers.

Athletics - Jim Sciarini ‘73This grid-iron standout had an impressive

football career in both high school and at the collegiate level. As a Bishop Dwenger Saint, he lettered in football in 1970, 1971 and 1972. He was 1971 All North Division Football, and in 1972 he was All City, All State and Catholic All American, all the while, he remained in the top 10% of his class academically. After Bishop Dwenger, he continued his sport at Michigan State University, on a full scholarship, lettering in 1975, 1976 and 1977. In his senior year, 1977, he was honored with Academic All Big Ten Football and also Academic All American. Currently, Jim is employed as the Human Resources Manager at Toledo Refining Company, LLC.Heistheproudfatherofthreewonderfulchildren, Theresa; Nick; and Megan.

Athletics - Anton Talamantes ‘98As a sophomore, in 1996, the team’s record

was 17 wins and 7 losses. Anton was one of three wrestlers to finish first in the SAC tournament, a new record for Bishop Dwenger. Anton finished second at the State meet, wrestling at 215. In 1997, the team had an even season with 10 wins and losses. However, Anton captured his first State Title, wrestling at 215. This was the first Wrestling State Title in Bishop Dwenger’s history. During his senior year, in 1998, the team ended the season with 8 wins and 15 losses; but was 5 and 4 in the SAC. Wrestling at 189, Anton won the State Title for the second year in a row. He was an All American during his senior year as well.

Professionally, Anton is a first shift Manager at Fabri-Form in Bluffton. Also, he and his brother, Rico, own and manage Ultimate Training Academy, which is a multi-disciplined gym that offers training in the Mixed Martial Arts.

Visual and Performing Arts - Ron Walz ‘67As a member of the first graduating class

at Bishop Dwenger, Ron spent his high school years studying, playing on the first varsity football team, singing in the choir, and serving on student council. Ron had the role of “Curley” in the school’s third musical performance, “Oklahoma.” He attended Purdue University where he majored in Television and Film; he hasalsostudiedsongwritingatUCLA.Later,he headed to California and he spent two and a half years traveling and singing with the New Christy Minstrels and the Serendipity Singers. He and his business partner, Rick Patterson, formedthecompanyofPatterson,Walz&FoxMusic. As a composer of advertising music, Ron, wrote or co-wrote music for Coke, Toyota, Budweiser, American Airlines, NBC, ABC, CBS, and Disneyland. He has written over 2,500 commercial songs that have been broadcasted

on television or radio. Their company’s greatest success was the theme song they created for “The CBS Nightly News with Dan Rather.” Currently, Ron, the proud father of two adult children, Kira and Michael, is retired and enjoying the time he and his wife, Carol, spend traveling with her custom jewelry business. They reside in South Haven, Michigan and belong to Saint Basil Church.

Citizens of Two Worlds - Patsy DumasPatsy’s commitment to Bishop Dwenger High

School has always been evident in a myriad of ways. Patsy and her husband, Jim, have sent all six of their children to Dwenger: Jennifer (Dumas) Dahm ’83; Julie (Dumas) Knorr ’84; Dave Dumas ’86; Beth Dumas ’88; Steve Dumas ’90; and Sarah (Dumas) Blake ’97. She was heavily involved at school, from being part of the original committee that founded Saints Alive! to serving on the School Board. In the early 80’s, Patsy was even the Development Director. Patsy has chaired numerous Saints Alive! committees during, and after, the time her children were in school. For eighteen years, she partnered with Carol Cornell to host the annual alumni trips to Europe which served as a fundraiser for BDHS. Perhaps her most notable gift is Patsy’s HolidayLuncheon.Beginningin1996,shehashosted a luncheon in her home during the first week of December. Patsy is a collector; and china is one of her passions. She sets eight to twelve tables in her home, each with a different place setting! Patsy and her committee serve a wonderful lunch to members of the Dwenger family, sometimes as many as 110 people! It is the perfect way to start the Christmas season and is a much anticipated and most cherished event. The list of Patsy’s achievements and gifts to the community is as impressive as it is long; Girl Scouts; Indiana Dental Association; Psi Iota Xi; and The Carriage House.

Kathleen Bennett, retiring after 32 years of service with Fort Wayne Community schools, has joined the Bishop Dwenger High School Guidance staff. She was a School Psychologist and Guidance Counselor at Elmhurst for 11 years and, more recently, she served at North Side as a Guidance Counselor. Mrs. Bennett

willbeworkingwithoursophomoresandfreshmenL-Z.Kathyismarried to John Bennett, our Athletic Director, and they have two grown children who are Dwenger graduates, Meredith ‘06 and Doug ’10.

Jennifer Long, a native of Fort Wayne, has spent the past 10 years teaching in Charleston, South Carolina. She has her BA in Social Studies Secondary Education from the University of Saint Francis. We have discovered that Jennifer is a very creative teacher and has benefitted greatly from serving as member of the

curriculumplanningcommitteeforSouthCarolina.Mrs.Longisteachingsocial studies and has replaced retired teacher, Mike McMillen.

Juanita Nix, a 2006 graduate of Bishop Dwenger, has joined us as our Special Education Coordinator. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education from The University of St. Francis and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in special education from Ball State University. Previously, she was a special

education teacher at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School. In her free time, newly engaged, Juanita coaches club gymnastics. She tells us that she is thrilled to be back on campus and is excited to be part of the growth and development of the special education department.

Molly (Flood) Schreck is a welcomed addition to the Development and Alumni Office. Molly, a 1991 graduate of Bishop Dwenger, joins the staff as the Alumni and Development Coordinator. She graduated from Saint Mary’s College in 1995 and is married to Mike, a fellow BD 1991 graduate. They

have four children who attend St. Vincent de Paul School. Recently, she has served on the School Board, Parish Finance Council, and Development Committee at St. Vincent de Paul. We are excited to have her experience and passion for our school on our team!

Kristin Turner, a Fort Wayne native and a Carroll High School graduate, has joined us as one of our Art teachers. Kristin was with us last year as a substitute covering Mrs. Conroy’s maternity leave. Ms. Turner had the exciting opportunity to study art in Europe for a couple of weeks and attended college drawing

courses at the University of Saint Francis during her senior year of high school. She attended the University of Saint Francis for college, where she discovered her passion for teaching. Kristin did her student teaching at Hickory Center and Eel River elementary schools.

Father Ajay Tiru is from Khunti (Jharkhand, India) and was born on December 4, 1969. His family consists of three brothers, one sister, father, and sadly, his mother passed away just a few months after he was ordained a priest in 2002. He joined the Diocese of Jamshedpur in 1989, at the age of 16, and

after 11 years of priestly training, he was ordained at Christ the King Parish, Chakradharpur (India) by the Bishop of Jamshedpur, Dr. Felix Toppo S.J. Fr. Ajay has an honors degree in Hindi language, Bachelor degrees in Philosophy and Theology, and worked on a Pastoral communication degree for some time.

After serving the Diocese of Jamshedpur as a priest for 11 years, heisnowanAssociatePriestatOurLadyofGoodHopeParish.InIndia, he served as an Associate Pastor, Pastor, taught candidates for thepriesthood,workedforsixmonthsintheDamienSocialLeprosyHospital, and then moved to the Bishop House.

In2012,heservedasaChaplainforLutheranHospitalandisnow very much looking forward to assisting the students of Bishop Dwenger High School as one of our Chaplains.

Mike McMillen, one of our Social Studies teachers, retired after 6 years of educating our Dwenger students. A long-time educator and administrator, 39 years in Fort Wayne Community Schools, Mike is looking forward to his second retirement! Thanks for your service to our school! We will miss you!

We thank Fr. Jason Freiburger for his time, commitment and spiritual guidance during his chaplaincy at Bishop Dwenger High School over the past few years. Although we are sad to see him leave, we are so excited that he is now at a parish. Fr. Jason is the new pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle in Elkhart, replacing past Dwenger chaplain, Fr. Bill Sullivan, who is now at St. John the Baptist, New Haven. The Dwenger family will continue to keep in our prayers and send him our love!

The Bishop Dwenger family was deeply saddened by the death of Bishop Emeritus John Michael D’Arcy. He died in the late morning hours of February 3rd, 2013. Bishop D’Arcy was at home at the time of his death, surrounded by loved ones. He passed on the 56th anniversary of his first Mass as an ordained priest. Bishop Kevin Rhodes shared that Bishop D’Arcy “faced death as he also lived his life: with deep faith and trust in God.”

Bishop D’Arcy was a good shepherd to Bishop Dwenger High School as he served the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend for these past 28 years. He established significant diocesan initiatives in spirituality, catechesis, education, ecumenism and social services outreach throughout the Diocese. Of particular note at Bishop Dwenger, was his involvement in the building of a second gym and a new library, as well as the Fine Arts addition in 2007.

On behalf of the entire Bishop Dwenger family, we express our gratitude and heartfelt sympathy to Bishop D’Arcy’s beloved sisters: Sister Anne D’Arcy, a Sister of Saint Joseph, and Mrs. Joan Sheridan and her family.

Every year, I ask the students to repeat a prayer that I have taught them. Many remember it year to year. “Lord, help me, teach me to find my vocation in life.”

James Albert “Jim” Poinsatte, 91, of Fort Wayne, passed on to eternal life on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013. Jim was a charter member of St. Jude Catholic Church, a Knight of Columbus #451, and an ardent supporter of numerous educational and charitable

institutions throughout the world including the United States, Europe, and Africa. He attended St. Jude Catholic School, Central Catholic High School, University of Notre Dame, University of Paris, and University of Chicago. “He cherished his wife and family and had an unyielding faith in God.” He is survived by his loving wife of 66years,Maxine(Lapp)Poinsatte;children,Anne(Leonard)Wall,Eugene (Michelle) Poinsatte, Elaine (Joseph) Hilger, Kristine (John) Szczepanski, Denise (Randall) Sordelet, Karen (Richard) Trahin, Janet (Donald) Schipper, Rosemarie (Clyde) Nix, Philip (Patricia) Poinsatte, Richard Poinsatte, and Robert (Ellanor) Poinsatte; brother, Charles (Anne Marie) Poinsatte; 62 grandchildren; and more than 80 great-grandchildren. 1963-64: September 4, 210 freshman students begin at Bishop Dwenger High School, the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ Sisters and Diocesan Clergyaretheschool’sfirsteducators.September8,BishopLeoA.Pursleylaysthecornerstone-ToOurYouth...CitizensofTwoWorlds.Father Don Isenbarger comes up with the idea that the school’s nickname should be “Saints” and the fight song should be “When the Saints Go Marching In.”

1964-65: “The Golden Trumpet,” the school’s newspaper goes to print. Student, Janet Melon, dresses up as “saint” and becomes the first mascot at school events.

1965-66: Boys Varsity Athletics begin. In the spring, we experience the first “Junior Day” in which seniors turn over the student leadership of school to the juniors.

1966-67: Old gold and white are selected as the school’s colors. The school’s yearbook is named “Aureate”. A student contest is held in Sister Angelene’s art class and that is when the rendition of the black-eyed Tuffy, the Saint Mascot, came to be (Tom Mettler’s artwork). First class of seniors graduates.

1967-68: BDHS hosts its first Homecoming and bonfire.

1968-69: Minimum teacher annual salary (with Bachelor’s Degree) is $6,000. Cinder track is replaced with a new all-weather track, the first of its kind in Indiana.

1969-70: Tuition is $200 per year.

1970-71: Business courses include: Typing; Office Practice; Bookkeeping; and Shorthand.

1971-72: Central Catholic High School closes in the spring.

1972-73: Ninety students transfer from Central Catholic to Bishop Dwenger in the fall, along with many faculty members.

All classes are now co-ed.

1973-74: First “Career Day” is hosted.

1974-75: The Spirit Tree is chopped down to a stump, but grows back.

1975-76: Girls IHSAA Sports Teams begin.

1976-77: In the NISBOVA solo ensemble contest, the band comes home with 72 medals.

1977-78: A large snow storm late in the spring sends students out to shovel the track before practice.

1978-79: Fr. Edward J. Krason retires as the first school principal. Brown houndstooth uniform skirts are replaced with plaid.

1979-80: John Gaughan becomes the new Principal. Students go on a Pilgrimage to see Pope John Paul, II in Chicago, Illinois. Saints Alive! (school’s major fundraiser) has its inaugural year.

1980-81: The Golden Trumpet changes in size and layout following the

news magazine trend in high school journalism.

1981-82: Mother Teresa visits Bishop Dwenger High School. Students receive award from the City of Fort Wayne for Outstanding Volunteer Service during The Great Flood of 1982.

1982-83: Faculty are dunked in the tank at Homecoming.

1983-84: First Football State Championship for Fort Wayne, Bishop Dwenger Saints beat Roncalli 22-21, coached by Andy Johns (subsequent State Titles in 1990, 1991).

1984-85: Attendance is taken on the computer for the first time. “The Golden Trumpet” appears in color.

1985-86: The “Aureate” features aerial shots of each class forming their graduating year.

1986-87:TheYachtClub,forstudentswholiketovisitnewandexcitingplaces, has its first Caribbean Cruise over Spring Break.

1987-88: BDHS Celebrates its 25th Anniversary.

1988-89: The entire student body is present for the dedication of the Grotto of the Blessed Virgin. All freshmen are given bibles which are blessed and marked with their names.

1989-90: Bishop D’Arcy visits BD in the spring to confirm 18 students who participate in a special sacramental program.

1990-91: The BD Science group of the Academic Bowl garners first place in the state.

1991-92: The campus ministry department expands with the addition of a new pastoral minister.

1992-93: Ten students spend Spring Break in Appalachia renovating a barn and a church.

1993-94: John Gaughan retires as the school’s second principal.

1994-95: J. Fred Tone becomes the new principal. Alumni golf outing, The Saints Open, has its inaugural year. Girls Gymnastics’ Team wins first State Championship (subsequent titles 03, 05, 06, 12, 13).

1995-96: BDHS starts a very special tradition with its first Grandparents’ Day.

1996-97: Groundbreaking for the Student Activity Center, courtyard becomes cafeteria, new media center, resource room, and library.

1997-98: A Sumo Wrestling event is held in which students wrestle in inflated suits to raise money for Habitat for Humanity.

1998-99: Girls Cheerleading wins its first State Championship (subsequent titles in 00, 07, 08, 10, 11, 12, 13). The year which begins with a heat wave has to be extended due to a blizzard.

1999-00: Dwenger starts Show Choir.

2000-01: An elevator is added to the school.

2001-02: The Academic Jacket program is initiated to honor students for their outstanding performance in the classroom.

2002-03: ACTS Ministry (A Chance To Serve) is developed as part of the Religion Department.

2003-04: BDHS hosts its first Hall of Fame dinner and ceremony to recognize and honor members of the Dwenger Family who have made exceptionalcontributionstoourschoolandcommunity.ZollnerMemorial Athletic Complex is renovated in partnership with Concordia High School.

2004-05: School is awarded “Blue Ribbon School” by the U.S. Department of Education.

2005-06: Girls Soccer Team wins their first State Championship (subsequent title ‘06). Fifteen students study in Costa Rica to protect the LeatherbackSeaTurtles.

2006-07: Students create a Web Team to design and implement a “Saints Underground” website.

2007-08:NewadditionofFineArtsWing,Development&AlumniOffice,and new Guidance Offices are blessed and dedicated.

2008-09: The varsity cheerleading squad is crowned National Champions during the Contest of Champions Nationals in Orlando, Florida.

2009-10: J. Fred Tone retires after 16 years as principal and 42 years at BDHS. Girls Softball team wins State Championship.

2010-11: Jason Schiffli becomes the 4th Principal. Girls Rugby team wins first State Championship in its inaugural season.

2011-12: First annual Merge is held for all new students to get to know eachotherandBDHS.StudentsprayanAll-LanguageRosaryandlauncha helium balloon rosary into the sky as choir members sing. Student Council plans and executes its first “Snowcoming,” a week full of special student activities during Catholic Schools Week in February.

2012-13: Students and faculty foster partnership with Catholic Relief Services to support social justice issues world-wide.

As we celebrate our 50th year of providing a top-notch, college preparatory Catholic education, we realize that there are many facility upgrades that need to be completed. A comprehensive renovation committee was formed to evaluate the entire physical plant and has determined that a multitude of renovations are necessary simply due to the age of our school, as well as normal wear and tear.

Investing in our physical plant is an investment in our students and in our future. In order to continue the proud tradition of Bishop Dwenger and to allow for additional growth in programs, we will be asking you for your financial and spiritual support. We have outlined the capital priorities established by the administrative leadership team based on strategic recommendations of the renovation committee.

Bishop Rhoades will have an integral role in designing the interior of the chapel. We plan to have at least 6 large stained glass windows, and since our chapel is dedicated to the Queen of All Saints, each window will have a depiction of a saint. There will be a contest that involves the entire Dwenger Community. Students, alumni, parents (past and present) and friends may write an essay on the who, what, how, and why the person believes his/her saint should be depicted in a chapel window. What saint do you think should be depicted in our new chapel? Email your essay to saints@bishopdwenger.com by January 31, 2014.

Bishop Rhoades will select the top 20 essays, and then the Dwenger Family will be able to vote for their favorite from that list. The Top 6 will be selected for our chapel.

Our Chapel- Christ is our Center!

• Christ is the center of our school and this chapel will provide a visible sign of our Catholic Identity for all to see. Did you know that we’ve had almost 30,000 visitors in the Chapel year-to-date and that over 40% of current diocesan seminarians are BDHS graduates?

• Construct a new chapel with enough seating for one class (300 students) and expanded space for Campus Ministry and Community Service

Our Gymnasium- and so much more!• It is . . . our front door! It is the first impression, and sometimes

the only impression, for our visitors. We use the gym for Mass, as a theatre, physical education classes, assemblies, Saints Alive!, and sporting events

• We need: bleachers; new wooden gymnasium floor; air conditioning; new insulated roof; improve sound system and lighting; window infill and ceiling upgrades; a fun and exciting display of our accolades; and refurbish stage and all support space

It is a very exciting time for Bishop Dwenger High School as we are in a celebration mode for all that has been, and in a planning mode for all that is yet to be . . . Our goal for the upcoming campaign is to raise $7,000,000. Our plans are to begin the renovations in the spring with the hope of completing all of these projects by fall of 2015. As always, our expectations are high, and with your assistance and prayers, we will make it a reality!

At the end of the school year, I had the chance to chat with past School Board President, Dr. David Pollifrone. It was like being in class- I learned so much about what is happening around school! I didn’t even know that we had a Strategic Plan, sounds kind of serious, but important. He told me that the Strategic Plan is a “working and breathing” document that focuses on the big issues about school like Catholic Identity; Curriculum; Enrollment & Marketing; Finance; Development; and Facilities & Capital Improvements. The Plan helps guide our School Board and Administrators to ensure that we are working together, effectively and efficiently, striving toward our common goals.
