Read this manual before using your player.The Player is set to play Region 2 discs.The player will accept the following formats (among others): DVD, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-DA, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, Picture CD,HDCD.The following formats are not acceptable:DVD discs with other region codes.Improperly formatted CD-Rs or CD-RWs. This may include discs which are not finalised.

Have your receipt ready when you call. Retain the packaging. If you dispose of it, do so having regard to any recycling regulations in your area.

DVD REGION CODES

DVD discs and players are covered by a worldwide agreement which limits playback of DVD discs to specific regions as determined by the software manufacturer. Most DVDs come marked with a region coding. A disc specified as playable in one region may not play on a player designed for a dif-ferent region. A disc specified as universal or with no region coding (Code 0)may be played in any region.

The regions are:Region 1: Canada, USARegion 2: Europe, Japan, Mid. East, South AfricaRegion 3: South-East AsiaRegion 4: Australia, Caribbean, Central & South America, New ZealandRegion 5: Africa, Former Soviet Union, India, North Korea, PakistanRegion 6: China

THIS PLAYER PLAYS REGION 2 AND REGION FREE , UNIVERSAL (0) DISCS.IMPORTANT NOTEDVD discs contain various features. Many features are determined by the program or software content on the DVD disc itself. Some procedures in this manual cannot be performed if the disc does not support the feature. Also, some discs may need special settings which are unsupported by the player.

GENERAL CAUTIONS

During playback, the disc spins at high speed, do not lift or move the player, doing so may damage the disc.Never press down on the top of the player especially when a disc is playing.

The player has built in copyright protection technol-ogy that prevents copying from a DVD disc to any media.If a video recorder is connected to the player, the video output image will be distorted.

SCART AUDIO/VIDEO CONNECTIONS

SCART CONNECTIONYou will need to purchase a SCART-SCART interconnect. Connect the DVD player to a SCART input on the TV. Audio and Video will now appear on the TV.Remember to switch the TV to the AV or SCART input when viewing DVDs. (Refer to your TV handbook for instructions.)

PRELIMINARIES

HANDSET BATTERIESYou will need to purchase two ‘AAA’ batteries.Invert the handset.Slide off the battery cover

Place 2 AAA batteries in the battery compart-ment with their polarities as shown

Replace the battery cover.

When the handset becomes erratic or ceases to work you should replace the batteries. Page 1 contains guidance for battery replacement and disposal.

USING THE HANDSET

Point the handset directly at the remote sensor of the player. The handset must be no more than 8 metres from the player and at an angle of no more than 30º for reliable operation. If operation is erratic in bright sunlight, relocate the player to a shady location.

POSITIONING THE PLAYER

Place the player on a level surface where it is unlikely to be knocked over or fall and where the connecting leads do not constitute a cause of danger.Tne means of disconnection from the mains supply is via the mains plug on the power cord. This must not be obstructed and be readily operable at all times.

CONNECTING THE PLAYER

Make sure all system units are switched OFF.Connect the player to your TV (as shown on Page 4 )

SWITCHING ON THE PLAYER

Plug the mains plug into the mains outlet • Switch on the power. The Standby light • (around the standby key on the player) will go RED as the player enters standbyPress the STANDBY key on the player or the • handset. The Standby light will go out. The player is now operational.•

LOADING A DISC

Press the• OPEN/CLOSE key on the handset or the player to open the DISC drawer.Load a disc into the tray, label side up. •

Press the OPEN/CLOSE key on the handset or • the player to close the drawer.

The disc will now load. Some formats take more time to load than others as the player has to download the Table of Contents (TOC).

DVD discs will display the ROOT or TITLE menu. In exceptional cases where there is one title and noth-ing else the disc may play.

The ROOT menu is the basic menu of a DVD disc and contains all the information relating to the DVD disc. This menu loads when you first insert a disc. To access this menu at other times, press the MENU key. The TITLE MENU shows the titles available on the DVD disc. To access this menu, press the TITLE key.

On many DVDs the ROOT and TITLE menus are the same. Each TITLE is divided into CHAPTERS. So you can play all, or any part of the disc as you choose.

If you give the player an invalid command it will be ignored and a ‘HAND’ sign will flash on screen.

NOTE: When the player is brought out of Standby, it powers on at MAXIMUM volume. This is so that you can control the volume via your TV handset

1) To play a DVD disc from the beginningPress on the handset or II on the player.

2) To change tracks when a DVD disc is playingPress to go forward one track at a timePress to go back one track at a time

. (Some DVDs will return you to the Title screen).Press PREVIOUS to go back through the tracks.

3) Fast Forward PlaybackPress repeatedlyThe speed cycles 2X 4X 8X 16X 32X NormalPress or cycle to Normal Speed to resume normal play

5) To Pause a disc during Play: Press II on the handset or II on the player

6) Frame AdvanceRepeatedly press STEP.

7) Zoom: Press ZOOM repeatedlyThe picture size changes 2X 4X OFFWhen Zoom is greater than 1: use the keys to shift the zoom point.

8) To alter the volume: Use the VOL+/- keys on the handset to alter volume from 0 (min) up to 17 (max).

9) To mute/unmute the volume: Press MUTE on the handset.

10) Stopping the DiscThe STOP button has two modes. When a disc is paused the laser is active. If the disc is paused for too long the surface may burn. A special stop mode is avail-able which stops the laser and the disc but memorises the position. When PLAY is

To temporarily stop the disc: Press STOP on the handset. The icon shown on the right will display temporarily.Press on the handset or II on the player to play from the point at which STOP was pressed.

To permanently stop the disc: Press STOP twice.

Press on the handset or II on the player to restart play.

ADVANCED OPERATION

ON SCREEN DISPLAYAn On Screen Display (OSD) disc status indicator will be displayed at the top of the TV screen when certain functions are executed, or when the OSD button on the handset is pressed. When different discs are loaded the indicators may change.

ROOT AND TITLE MENUS:1: Load a DVD disc.2: To display the ROOT menu: Press MENU on the handset or the player.

The Root Menu displays the hierarchical structure of the DVD disc. If a disc is playing it will stop.

3: To display the TITLE menu: Press TITLE on the handset. All the user choices on the disc are driven from this menu. The title menu may con-tain one or more titles. (On many DVDs the TITLE and ROOT menus are the same).

3: To play the title: Press u.

CHECKING THE OPERATIONAL STATUSThe ON SCREEN DISPLAY can be configured to show the current title playing; the chapter being played; the times remaining and elapsed; information concerning subtitles, Ausio languages, audio formats and camera angles.

During Play: You can change chapters by pressing the chapter number.The handset supports direct key entry, but the player will respond more quickly if you enter numbers below 190 as 01, 02, erc.Direct Selection From the TITLE Menu: • Enteranumber.The player will usually go to the start of the chapter indicated by the number you enter. If there is more than one title on the disc, entering a number may take you to the title. Play begins from the start of the selection.Direct Selection During Play• Enteranumber(say 2). THE SEARCH FUNCTION

To select and play a chapter:

• Press SEARCH once

• Enter the Chapter number in the highlighted section with the number keys. • Press . The Player will jump to the start of the chapter.

To select and play a title:

• Press SEARCH once• Press

• Enter the Title number in the highlighted section with the number keys. • Press . The Player will jump to the start of thetitle.

• Press SEARCH twice

• Enter the time (in H:MM:SS format) in the highlighted section. • Press

REPEAT PLAY

Pressing the REPEAT key will:A: Repeat a ChapterB: Repeat a TitleC: Repeat the entire discD: Cancel REPEAT

In REPEAT mode the selection repeats continuously until cancelled

CHANGING THE AUDIO SETTINGS OF A DVD

The player allows you to select a preferred language, and audio format from those included on the DVD video disc.

• Press AUDIO repeatedly to cycle through the languages and audio formats on the disc.

After you have entered the selection, the program will play with the new settings.The player will support Dolby 5.1 formats but will down mix program material to 2-channel. Note: if you select DTS or other unsupported formats the sound will become garbled and may disappear entirely.

PROGRAM PLAY

The Program function can be used to play selected chapters in a specifi c order. Up to 20 chapters can be programmed at any one time.NOTE: It is possible to program a chapter more than once.

The program menu displays.

2. Press to select the first available program line

A cursor appears in the Title column

4. Press to select the title number.

As you go through the list the number of chapters associated with the title will deploy.

5. Press u to program the title

The selection appears in the Title columnThe highlight moves to the chapter column

The first program selection will deploy

8. Repeat steps 2 through 7 to program the next slots.9. If you make a mistake select the line again and re-enter the new values.10. Press u to begin playback of the programmed chapters.11. 4) Pausing a disc

6) Direct Track SelectionWhen the disc is stopped or during play: • Enter a track number. • Press uThe disc will jump to the new track. If you do not press u , after a short period the disc will play from the track selection.

7) SearchWhen the disc is stopped or during play: • Press SEARCH• Enter the time (in H:MM:SS format) in the highlighted section• Press u. The Player will play from the time specified.

8) Repeat• Press REPEAT once to repeat the current track.• Press REPEAT again to repeat all tracks.• Press REPEAT again to cancel repeat.

PLAYING AN AUDIO CD

Load an Audio CD into the player. The player reads the disc. Most CDs will start automatically - a very few won’t. The player will display

All the folders move to the left pane.

The images in the open folder are displayed and the first image is highlighted.

To select and play files in a different folder:5. Press to move to the left pane6. Press in the left pane to highlight a folder.7. Press uor to highlight the frst photo of the folder in the contents pane.6. Press to highlight a photo. 7. Press u to start the Slide Show from the selected photo.Note: When selecting files, you can enter the number of the file (shown at the right of the description). Press the u key to commence the slide show. If you do not press u the slide show will automatically start after a few moments.

NOTE: Whenever the ROOT folder is highlighted all other folders will appear in the Right Pane, because they form part of the contents of the Root folder

PLAYING A JPG DISCLoad a JPG disc into the player. The main screen will appear briefly and then the player will play all the images on the disc (including any that are in folders) as a slide show.When the Slide Show has played once or if you press the MENU key during play:

The disc will stop and display the main Menu. A JPG disc may contain images only or may have one or more folders with images within the folders.

When you enter the Menu, the ROOT folder always displays first

The root folder is the disc itself and contains both files and folders.

PLAYING A FILE FROM THE ROOT MENU

Press to highlight a specific photo. A thumbnail of the selected photo will be displayed in the bottom left hand corner of the screenPress u to start the Slide Show from the selected photo.

PLAYING MPEG-4 AND XvID VIDEO FILES

XvID is an open source compressed video format. Most XvID files will play; AVI or MPEG-4 video files may be recognised by the player but may not play - this is dependent on the file structure and the way they have been burned to disc.

• Load a disc: The first file will display, if it is a video the video will play.• Press MENU to display the Main Menu.

Video Files can be in sepa-rate folders or in a folder with other images.

NOTESVideo files play in the list along with other files. If you do not want these files to appear, use the Sort File routine on the previous page to group them together - you can then play video files as a group or jpgs as a group.Video Files do not appear in the image box in the Main Menu, nor are they visible in Thumbnail Mode.If a file format (video or still image) is not recognised by the player, it will be omitted from the list.Although XvID files use the MP3 format for their sound tracks, MP3 and other Audio files cannot be played.

TV SYSTEM

This menu allows you to select the correct TV System for your TV to ensure the optimum picture quality. The available options are:

NTSC - Sets your TV to view NTSC signals.PAL - Sets your TV to view NTSC signals.Auto - The screen adapts to the signal - all modern TVs should have this facility.

VIDEO OUTPUT

This option is pre-set to RGB via the SCART output and cannot be altered

TV TYPE

This menu allows you to set the aspect ratio to suit your TV. The available options are:

4:3 PS - Stretches a widescreen format to fill the entire screen (Pan and Scan).

4:3 LB - Standard 4:3 format (letterbox).16:9 - Standard widescreen format.

SCREEN SAVER

This menu allows you to turn the Screen Saver On or Off. When the screen saver is turned on, an animated image appears on screen if the DVD player is left idle for a period of time.

STYLE

This menu allows you to choose the colour scheme for the Setup menus. There are four styles to choose from each with a different variety of colours.

ANGLE MARK

Angle mark provides a visual indication when multiple angles are available during DVD disc playback. This menu allows you to turn the feature on/off.

DEFAULT

Select ‘Read’ to reset the DVD player to its default factory settings.

NOTE: Password and Parental Control set-tings are not affected.

The PASSWORD menu allows you to set the Parental Control password.

1. Use the keys to highlight Password in the Custom Setup menu. 2. Press to set the password. The Password screen is displayed.3. With the Number keys, enter the old password. The default password is ‘9922’.NOTE: If an incorrest password is entered, ‘Wrong Password’ will be displayed.4. With the Number keys, enter the new four digit password.5. CARE AND CLEANING

Occasionally wipe the player with a lint free duster. Never clean the player with liquids or solvents.Use a proprietary disc cleaner to clean the disc compartnent. If your discs skip or don’t play properly, this is more likely to be caused by damage or dirt on the disc rather than any fault of the unit.

CARE OF DISCS

DVD discs are fragile. Treat them with care. Always store them upright in their packing; away from direct sunlight, heat and damp.When handling discs, hold the disc’s outer edge and/or the centre spindle hole. Do not touch the disc surface. Never bend or flex a disc.Clean the disc surface with a soft, dry cloth. Wipe the disc surface gently, radially, from centre toward the outer edge. Never apply solvents to the surface of a disc.
