Popular tool can be an eye opener

With the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, it is a stressful time for many people with many aspects of our daily lives changing rapidly. Some of us may turn to alcohol for short-term stress relief or because of boredom, but rather than helping us cope, alcohol can make us feel more stressed and anxious.

It’s a difficult time for many and it is not surprising people are looking for ways to reduce stress. Keep in mind that drinking

can actually make you feel more anxious as well as affect

your sleep and your ability to fight disease.

Reducing your drinking will not only help to keep you healthy and safe now, but you will reduce your risk of cancers and other health problems later. You’ll also be helping to prevent extra burdens on already-stretched health services.

To stay healthy and well, it is important that if you choose to drink, to do so at low-risk levels. The National Health and Medical Research Council ( NHMRC) guidelines advise:

• Drink no more than two standard drinks on any day to remain at low-risk of alcohol-related disease or injury over the lifetime.

• Drink no more than four standard drinks on a single occasion reduces the risk of alcohol-related injury arising from that occasion.

So what then is a standard drink? The Alcohol Think Again website www.alcoholthinkagain.com.au has three interactive tools which can answer common questions such as, what is a standard drink really? What does that actually look like across the various types of alcoholic drinks? Why does it matter anyway?

With people frequently over estimating size of a standard drink and therefore underestimating the total number of standard drinks they might be consuming, the digital standard drink pouring tool on the Alcohol Think Again website can be a real interactive eye opener.

The digital interactive tool lets you try pouring a standard drink with various types of alcoholic drinks to test your knowledge of what is a standard drink.

These uncertain times are affecting everyone all over the world over. Now, more than ever, it is important to manage your mental health and wellbeing, particularly if you are feeling worried or anxious. If the COVID-19 outbreak is causing you particular stress or anxiety, or if you are beginning to feel overwhelmed, talk to someone you trust, such as your GP, a health worker, social worker, or call a mental health support line.

Visit www.thinkmentalhealthwa.com.au for a range of information about looking after your mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic and where to seek help. If you or someone you know might need help in relation to alcohol or other drug use, please speak to your GP or a health care professional.

Alternatively, the Alcohol and Drug Support Line is a confidential,

non-judgemental telephone counselling, information, support and referral service. The service is free of charge and

available 24/7 by calling (08) 9442 5000 or 1800 198 024 (toll-free for country callers) or emailing

DON’T TRUST YOUR

TIRED SELF!

With the easing of restrictions and some region-

al boundaries opening up from 18th May there

is likely to be increased traffic volume on south-

west roads.

The “Don’t Trust Your Tired Self” campaign kick

starts again from Saturday 23 May at The

Crooked Carrot, Forrest Highway,

Myalup raising awareness of driver fatigue with

a free travel cup and flier along with a free tea

or coffee for the driver. (see photo below)

Please see attached a draft media release that

your Local Government or organisation can

adapt to promote along with some images that

can be utilised on social media.

Another option is to pass this email onto Human

Resources as well and have cups/fliers to give

out internally to staff along with encouraging

them to complete this online driver fatigue

survey.

Two $100 Bunbury Farmers Market vouchers

will be drawn just before Christmas for people

that complete both the pre and post survey. Link

PARTNER INCOME TEST FOR JOBSEEKER PAYMENT

From 27 April, there is a temporary increase in the amount your partner can earn before your JobSeeker Payment is

affected. This means that your JobSeeker Payment will reduce by 25 cents for every dollar your partner earns over

$994 per fortnight. They can earn up to $3,068 per fortnight before your payment stops. These amounts will be

higher if you’re eligible for Pharmaceutical Allowance or Rent Assistance. Your own personal income will also affect

how much payment you’ll receive. If you’re eligible, you’ll need to report your and your partner’s income by 6pm on

your reporting day. If you report for a period which includes days before 27 April, we’ll only apply the temporary

increase to the days which fall after 27 April.

Further information can be found at: https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/…/income-a…/income-test

HOW IS COVID-19 IMPACTING OUR FOOD

AVAILABILITY AND ACCESS?

Get involved in a new South West project to understand how COVID-19 is

impacting our food availability and access.

The Edith Cowan University South West Campus team is conducting a consumer survey to understand

how COVID-19 might have changed the food consumers have bought and consumed, their opinion on

how food availability and access has been impacted and their perceptions of locally grown food.

The team will also conduct telephone or videoconference interview with people working in food supply

such as farmers, wholesalers, retailers, hospitality staff, people working in childcare, aged care or food

relief staff/volunteers.

The interviews will aim to understand how COVID-19 has impacted South West WA food supply chains,

perceptions of changes to consumer food purchasing behaviour, food supply innovations and opportuni-

ties and aspirations for post-COVID-19 food supply.

People willing to take part in the short consumer survey can access at the link below:

https://ecuau.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_57NFsUxT0O8JwgJ .

For further information about interviews or to get involved, email Dr Stephanie Godrich at
