Fireworks Safety

We know fireworks are fun and young kids look adorable holding those

sparklers. Unfortunately, fireworks can cause serious injuries to children,

including devastating burns and other injuries. The best way to keep your

children safe is to not use any fireworks at home. Attend public fireworks displays and

leave the lighting to the professionals. If you plan to use fireworks, make sure to follow

these tips to keep your kids as safe as possible.

Facts

More than 3,000 children under the age of 15 are sent to the emergency room each year

in the United States because of fireworks. Sparklers, which are typically viewed by

parents as relatively harmless fireworks for children, account for one-third of the injuries

to children under five.

Top Tips

The best way to protect your family is to not use any fireworks at home. Instead, attend

public fireworks displays and leave the lighting to the professionals.

If you plan to use fireworks, make sure they are legal in your area.

1. Closely supervise children around fireworks at all times.

2. Little arms are too short to hold sparklers, which can heat up to 1,200 degrees.

How about this? Let your young children use glow sticks instead. They can be just as

fun but they do not burn at a temperature hot enough to melt glass.

3. Always have a bucket of water and/or a fire extinguisher nearby. Know how to

operate the fire extinguisher properly.

4. Closely supervise children around fireworks at all times.

5. Do no wear loose clothing while using fireworks.

6. Never light fireworks indoors or near by grass.

7. Point fireworks away from homes, and keep away from brush, leaves and flammable

substances.

Be Prepared for an Accident or Injury

1. Stand several feet away from lit fireworks. If a device does not go off, do not stand

over it to investigate. Put it our with water and display of it.

2. Always have a bucket of water and/or a fire extinguisher nearby. Know how to

operate the fire extinguisher properly.

3. If a child is injured by fireworks, immediately go to a doctor or hospital. If an eye

injury occurs, do not allow your child to touch or rub it, as this may cause even more

damage.

Milk can become homemade ice cream in five minutes by using a bag!

This homemade, creamy treat is a summertime delight for kids and

adults alike.

What you'll need:

∙ 1 tablespoon sugar

∙ 1/2 cup milk or half & half

∙ 1/4 teaspoon vanilla

∙ 6 tablespoons rock salt

∙ 1 pint-size plastic food storage bag (e.g., Ziploc)

∙ 1 gallon-size plastic food storage bag

∙ Ice cubes

How to make it:

1. Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt.

Seal the bag.

2. Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.

3. Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again

carefully.

4. Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes about five

minutes.

5. Wipe off the top of the small bag, then open it carefully.

Enjoy!

Tips:

A 1/2 cup milk will make about 1 scoop of ice cream, so double the

recipe if you want more. But don't increase the proportions more than

that -- a large amount might be too big for kids to pick-up because the

ice itself is heavy.
