December 2012 and January 2013 Events
The Iota Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc. hosted their 2013 Founder’s Day
Celebration on January 15th. They
commemorated their founders and Sorority’s principles of sisterhood, scholarship, and service.
Iota Mu also began co-hosting the 2013 Emerging Young Leaders program at Lowes Grove Middle School. On January 19th, they collaborated with area chapters to kickoff the program in
honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Emerging Young Leaders provides leadership development, civiv engagement, enhanced academic preparation, and character building for
middle school girls.
Iota Mu joined forces with 4 other nearby chapters to plan a formal Founder’s Day celebration for all sorors in the Durham/Chapel Hill
area on January 26th.

The Lambda Omega Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. held their annual Rhapsody in Red Charity Ball on January 25t at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club.
This year being the celebration of their Centennial, the ball was titled Rhapsody in Red: 100 Years of a Global DynaSTy to honor the worldwide impact of Delta Sigma
Theta over the past 100 years, with a focus on the countries of Japan, Jamaica, Kenya and the United Kingdom. Elegantly showcasing the cultural treasures of these nations through savory food, delightfully comedic entertainment, international decor and a
passionate speaker from our chosen charity—World Relief—they aimed to expose their guests to the importance of international awareness and involvement. All
proceeds from the ball will be donated to World Relief-Durham, the Durham branch of an international organization dedicated to the yearly relocation of 7,000–8,000
refugees, who have been threatened by ethnic, religious or political persecution. Lambda Omega would like to thank all of the guest who attended dressed to impress,
despite the sleet and snow! Thank you, as always, for the incredible support!
The Brothers of the Iota Xi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi held a Christmas Social on December
16, 2012. They were able to raise $800 to purchase gifts for minority children in the
Durham area whose families could not afford it.
The Iota Xi Chapter and Alpha Kappa Chapter spend MLK day packaging meals with the MLK
Million Meals Committee. With the assistance of students from Duke University and North
Carolina Central University, thousands of meals were packaged to be sent to needy families.

The Omicron Nu Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. teamed up with Theta Nu Xi to host Cocoa and
Cosmetics. After some hot cocoa and sweet treats, a Mary Kay Consultant taught how to have clean and healthy
skin. She had samples and everyone got to cleanse and try out new products and techniques. At the end of the
session, there were products for sale and more information about Mary Kay. Omicron Nu thanks
everyone who was able to attend.
The Alpha Alpha Chi Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. hosted Blue White Weekend in January. While it was
slightly hampered by ice and snow, it included a successful string of events including Stepping 101 and community service in the Scrap Yard. They also took 50 students to Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony. Finally they
stepped at the IVASA Pageant on January 26th.
