• Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy

2030 (DIES) was deployed in 2011 to set the strategic direction of Dubai towards securing sustainable supply of energy and enhancing demand efficiency of water, power and fuel.

• Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy

2030 plan, aims to reduce energy demand by 30% by 2030 and diversify the energy mix with 61% from natural gas, 24% from nuclear and clean coal, and 15% from solar energy.

Dubai municipality has started the implementation of solar energy systems in its activities and projects aiming at saving energy consumption as part of Dubai’s plan for applying Green Building Regulation. As a first step Dubai Municipality applied solar lighting system in Dubai Neighbourhood Parks and Community Facilities in 2009. The decision to apply Green Building Regulation on entire government buildings and facilities in Dubai became compulsory in 2010. The first solar thermal application (solar water heating system) has been implemented in H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Matoum Sport Complex in 2010. Dubai Municipality applied off-grid PV systems in various projects (Al-Fahaidi Market, Al-Manara Center & Quran Park Green Building) as a part of Green Building Regulation in 2011.

In 2013, DM issued a decree for the use of solar water heaters In 2014, DM enforced Green Building regulation on all projects in Dubai In 2015, DM implemented the first zero energy park in UAE and middle east. In 2015, DM announced that BIPV will be implemented in Dubai Frame and it will be the first integrated building in gulf area with solar technology.

PV Technologies :

• There are two primary types of PV – Crystalline Silicon and Thin Film.

• Crystalline Silicon divided into two main technologies - Mono and Poly Crystalline

• Within Thin Film, there are currently five technologies that have either reached or are soon to reach commercialization :

1- Cadmium Telluride (CdTe), 2- Amorphous silicon (a-Si), 3- Copper Indium Gallium Selenide (CIGS), 4- Organic Photovoltaics (OPV), 5- Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSC).

• Gallium arsenide (GaAs) cells are also in production.

• Concentrated solar power systems (CSP highly efficient, but very expensive)

• On-grid PV systems

• Off-grid PV systems

On-Grid Solar

Definition: These systems are solar pv systems that generate electrical power during the daytime to operate the connected loads and to export excess power to the grid if the plant is overproducing so it can utilized later.

Benefits: These are simplest systems and the most cost effective to install. The expected payback (ROI) of these systems offsetting utility bills is avg. 10 yrs.

Off-Grid Solar

Definition: These systems are solar pv systems that generate electrical power during the daytime to operate the connected loads and to export excess power to the batteries in order to be used during nighttime.

Benefits: Provides power for critical loads at remote areas in the absence of grid connection when they power grid is down. Payback can be 15-20 yrs.

Advantages of Solar Power : • Cut your electricity bills. Sunlight is free, so once you've paid for the initial installation,

your electricity costs will be reduced. • Export electricity back to the grid. If your system is producing more electricity than you

need, you can export the surplus back to the grid through the Feed-in Tariff scheme. • PV panels provide clean – green energy. Eliminating the carbon foot print. During

electricity generation with PV panels there is no harmful greenhouse gas emissions thus solar PV is environmentally friendly.

• Solar energy can be made available almost anywhere there is sunlight • Solar energy is especially appropriate for smart energy networks with distributed

power generation – DPG is indeed the next generation power network structure!

• Solar Panels cost is currently on a fast reducing track and is expected to continue reducing for the next years – consequently solar PV panels has indeed a highly promising future both for economical viability and environmental sustainability.

• Operating and maintenance costs for PV panels are considered to be low, almost

negligible, compared to costs of other renewable energy systems • PV panels have no mechanically moving parts, except in cases of –sun-tracking

mechanical bases; consequently they have far less breakages or require less maintenance than other renewable energy systems (e.g. wind turbines)

• PV panels are totally silent, producing no noise at all; consequently, they are a perfect

solution for urban areas and for residential applications (see solar panels for home)
