DRILL PIPES FOR DTH & AIR/MUD ROTARY DRILLING

North Star is China’s No.1 manufacturer of 76-114mm pipes for use on DTH/Rotary rigs from the smaller AirROC D50 through to mid-range rigs such as the Atlas Copco DM series.

We also design and produce pipes for water well rigs such as the T2W or Sandvik’s DW330.

We friction weld tool joints and tubes up to pipe diameters of 140mm.

FRICTION WELDING

Our North factory was one of the first in China to add an internal upset to the pipe body before friction welding. This solved long-standing issues in Chinese pipe quality, increasing the strength of the weld and improving pipe concentricity. The factory has three friction welding machines from 40T to 125T.

THREAD SELECTION & TREATMENT

North Star offers a comprehensive range of API and BECO threads, tested against certified thread gauges. Trained operators cut our threads on CNC lathes, after which the thread surfaces are hardened to protect them against galling.

ROTARY BLAST PIPE

We have the capability to manufacture Blast Pipe from 89 to 340mm.

Pipes up to 140mm may be friction welded or submerged-arc welded; from 152mm up, the pipe bodies and tool joints are shrink-fitted and submerged-arc welded on one of our two SAW machines.

We implement 100% magnetic particle testing of the weld area. Tool joints are subjected to both ultrasonic flaw testing and magnetic particle inspection.

North Star’s factory is the No.1 supplier of Rotary and Rotary Percussive Casing to the Chinese civil construction industry.

We manufacture direct-threaded casing from 127 to 219mm, plus pin-pin subs to match. We also make a comprehensive range of API inner rods, plus flushing heads, saver subs, and casing bits.

ABOUT NORTH STAR

Our origins date back to 1998, when the ‘North’ factory was established in Xuanhua, three hours north of Beijing. Among North’s earliest partners was Ingersoll Rand, also based in Xuanhua at the time. North developed rapidly to produce a wide range of drilling equipment including DTH drill pipes for mining, water well and exploration drilling, plus HDD pipes and tools such as reamers and swivels. In 2012 HDD drill pipe production expanded to a new facility, China Star, which was co-invested by Petromaterials China, an API-certified manufacturer of drill pipe drill collars for the oil and gas industry. Today more than 160 workers, including 14 R&D staff, are employed in the original 20,000 square-meter North factory. Annual production capacity is 150,000 pipes.

China Star employs 100 staff on a 12,000 square-meter site. Annual capacity is 100,000 HDD pipes. The North Star company and brand were established in 2012 to unify sales and marketing of the factories’ products on the international market. North Star’s head office is in Beijing. Its President and General Manager, Michael Lyu, is concurrently head of both the North and China Star factories.
