    Coordinator

The Deep Social Networking project has been in ac-

tion since March 2009 and is turning the corner

thanks to its training the trainers concept. The same

participants that have been the cornerstone of this

project since the beginning, have now become the

trainers, capable of conducting all four phases of

DSN to a range of ages, technical skills, and in multi-

ple languages (English, Thai, Bahasa, Burmese,

Khmer, Filipino, Lahu, Kayan, Igorot and the list is

    growing).

Multiple DSN trainings will be conducted by former

DSN participants simultaneously through out South-

    east Asia

In Thailand four of our top DSN participants from

KNGY (Kayan New Generation Youth) will be holding

weekly trainings for the Saw High School in Mae

Sot. All of the participants are Burmese refugees and

will receive all of their DSN training in Bur-

mese, there will be no need for a translator since

our former participants are Burmese as well. Save

Lahu in Chiang Dao led by Mr. Maitree is in the proc-

ess of developing a school for 20 orphans that would

allow for regular schooling, as well as, DSN trainings

    during the evenings and weekends.

In Indonesia Budhie Himawan has been conducting

follow-up DSN support for the Human Rights Work-

ing Group and affiliated organizations that attended

the initial training in Jakarta. Budhie will be holding

phase 1 DSN training with AMAN (Archipelago in

which a dozen participants from AMAN will learn al

four phases of DSN and conduct trainings for the

    nearly 100 members of AMAN.

.in Cambodia DSN trainings will be held by both

CIYA (Cambodian Indigenous Youth Alliance) and

MYN Cambodia (Mekong Youth Network) in the de-

velopment of websites and social media in order to

empower the youth of Cambodia and all of its Indig

    nous Peoples.

.And in the Philippines DSN follow-up trainings in

Social Activism Blogging will be held with students i

Bontoc and Tadian in the Cordillera Region with

MPSPC (Mountain Province State Polytechnic Col-

lege). Currently six of our Indigenous DSN partici-

pants from Thailand, Cambodia, and the Philippines

are attending a week long youth video/filming training camp in Baguio City, Philippines.

Id like to start by thanking Chief

    Phil Lane Jr., whose inspiration

    motivates us learning and imple-

    menting Deep Social Networks. I

would not forget your great efforts

in supporting me during the critical

    situations.

I'd like to sincerely thank Melinda,

    Michael and SEARCH for spending

your valuable time coming to the

    training, ensuring everything is

taken care of and sponsoring the

    training.

I'd like to truthfully thank Cliff and

Joakim for providing the best plat-

form for Deep Social Networks. In

particular, I want to thank Cliff Lyon

for introducing me to this wonder-

ful team. I would also like to thank

Jon Ramer and Tom. I stole with

    pride some of your materials.

Each participant has their own tal-

ent. We were very happy teaching

    each other sharing our knowledge

    and expertise. There were some

    occasions however, when we had

    difficulty with internet connection.

But I would consider it as valuable

    lesson for future projects.

With all of our enthusiasm, the

    participants created 15 sites, which

    are: some organization sites, some

    networking sites and some per-

sonal sites. Although they are not

full fledged sites, they formed a

    good groundwork.

Deloria, Franco and I see some

    potential future Deep Social Net-

    works.

I would like to take this opportunity

to thank everyone directly or indi-

    rectly involved in the training.

A report filed by Budhie Himawan,

    Four Directions DSN Coordinator

    Indonesia, in October 2010

With the great efforts and sup-

ports from all parties, we success-

    fully completed the Deep Social

    Network Training for Trainers in

    Jakarta.

The training was attended by 13

participants from 12 organizations(AICHR, HRWG, SEAPC, HRRCA and

8 other NGOs). In addition to that,

    Kris Merginio from Working Group

for an ASEAN Human Rights Mecha-

    nism (Philippine) also joined the

    training.

The training went smooth. All par-

    ticipants are computer literate

even some of them have IT role in

    their organizations.

Additionally, all of them have deepknowledge about their own organi-

zation and most of them were

    ready with their contents.

DSN Training a Hit in Jakarta

Our thanks must also go to M

Rafendis and his team who h

worked so tirelessly to make i

    such a success and especially

& Dhini who made sure every

    thing ran so very well.

Above all, however, I'd like to

    sincerely thank Deloria & Fran

who guide me before and dur

the training. I really appreciatyour presence. Its been great

    fun and enjoyable working wi

    you both.

The training was just a kick sta

The real work is waiting ahead

    will contact each organization

    visit and assist them building

    sustainable Deep Social Net-

    works. I would certainly need

    your continuous support.

    Thank you.

For us there is no doubt the extra

time and attention makes a keydifference in training sessions, and

we are extremely proud of the

    results!

    Lesson #2: Outreach Benefits for

    Rural and Isolated Communities

    Social Networking can bring re-

    sources, tools, and connect iso-

lated communities with the rest of

    the world.

    In addition to accessing online

    resource materials that can benefit

    their community, participants are

encouraged to use the Internet to

reach out to individuals outside of

    their geographic region.

This outreach can inject new ideas

    and assistance to community issues

    that need attention. The participa-

tion of others outside of the region

can inspire and energize the local

    community.

    Lesson #3: Participants Should b

equipped to Teach and Share wthey Learn with others in their co

    munity

This makes the DSN project scal-

    able and sustainable, and allows

    online communities to continue

    growth long after workshops.

    Lesson #4: A Strong Foundation

    needed in Digital Competency an

Digital Literacy for this Digital Fu

    ture.

Participants will gain an edge in

    their future careers by under-

    standing how Internet and comm

    nication tools are beneficial.

By developing their skills in Inter

    net services integration, VoIP an

    telecommunications and basic

    website contraction and design,

    participants may be presented w

    more economic opportunities th

    without this knowledge.

    While conducting DSN workshops,

our teams education was just asimportant as the skills we taught

to every group. We have summa-

rized some key observations in four

    lessons learned.

    Lesson #1: Quality over Quantity

It is always better to focus on fewer

organizations and offer a series of

    trainings ensuring that those or-

    ganizations involved can develop

their websites and social media to

    its greatest potential.

Instead of jumping from one work-

shop to the next, and rushing par-

    ticipants through the program, we

    found that spending more time

with each group and making sure

    there was ample follow up

    strengthened the skills taught.

We have participants who are not

only skilled in DSN, but are now

teaching DSN to others in their

    community!
