tip top answers Too Good To Be True?try it! You’ll like it!

The ancient Egyptians did it. The Greeks and Romans did it. And oh, those Vikings! Now you can too. Add pizazz with exotic cardamom!

Cardamom seeds can be crushed or used whole to add a heady aroma to curries, rice dishes, and breads. A member of the ginger family, there are several varieties, but green or true cardamom is most commonly used for cooking and to spice up chai tea.

Spices are often used in traditional South East Asian medicine and cardamom’s vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and electrolytes are consumed for a pick-me-up to help improve digestion and circulation and to soothe respiratory ailments and throat problems. It has also been used as an antibacterial mouthwash. Find recipes online!

What is a crown?n Sometimes one is custom-fitted over your damaged tooth to protect and strengthen it so you won’t lose it.

n One or more can be specially fabricated for attachment to neighboring teeth to bridge a gap.

n A crown can also be placed on top of an artificial tooth root implanted into your jawbone to form a completely new tooth.

How will I look with one? n You can choose a gold or silver look, but most people prefer materials that match the rest of their smile.

n Ceramic crowns can be as translucent as your own enamel and are an excellent choice if you have metal allergies.

n When placed over metal for additional strength, ceramics still look natural, but they are not quite as translucent.

Say It Again, Sam! Here’s looking at you!It appears that kids, even as young as 4-6, are heeding their parents’ message

that healthy is good and sugar is bad, according to a small study published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

When a popular recognizable character from television or toys appears on a cereal box, it creates a halo effect, so kids think it tastes better. No character? No contest. Kids prefer the same cereal when it’s called Healthy Bits over Sugar Bits.

Children really do find the familiar appealing, so keep up the repetition. Avoiding sugar and eating healthy are excellent lifelong lessons, and seeing you make home care and dental visits your priorities, will also make them theirs.

Have you noticed anyone self-consciously covering up their smiles? Embarrassment about stained teeth, fillings, or visible tooth decay is a sure sign that a dental visit is overdue.

Do you notice seeds, pepper, or other small bits of food caught in a smile well after mealtime is over? It’s time to brush up on brushing and flossing!

FIVEWhen’s the last time you bought dental floss? A couple of months ago? Everyone in the family should floss at least once a day. Little ones will need assistance.

FOURDried-out toothbrushes are unused toothbrushes. It’s worth checking and reminding everyone that they need to brush for two minutes at least twice a day.

THREEHave you noticed bad breath or coated tongues instead of healthy-looking pink ones? It’s important to brush the tongue as well as the teeth.

Office HappeningsWe are welcoming Becky back after her maternity leave. You will see her in our

Daggett office on Mondays and Thursdays and in the Menominee office the other days of the week. A HUGE THANK YOU to Mary Kakuk who during Becky’s maternity leave filled the role of the front desk in the Daggett office. We enjoyed having Mary back in the role she did for many years until she retired. Coming back greatly helped the office and it gave Mary a chance to reconnect with many patients she has known for many years. A win-win for all involved.

This past summer, Laurie, in our hygiene department, again was a Cub Scout leader. She went with the Scouts to Camp Rokilio, which is a 3 day 3 night camp for boys from the age of 6 to 11. The boys can swim, paddleboat, and learn the safety rules at the archery and BB gun ranges. The main theme of all activities is to be safe and have fun.

Dr. Park will be coaching a Pee Wee AA hockey team in Escanaba this season. His son Braeden and five other local area players will be traveling to Escanaba and all throughout the UP and the upper part of Lower Michigan.

Although Dr. Engelmann is still relatively new to the practice, she is turning out to be a valuable team member. If you have not had a chance to meet her and you are in the office please ask to say hi. Our entire team is extremely excited that she is a part of our office. Dr. Engelmann will be taking continuing education in the Milwaukee area for further education on root canal therapy and advanced education on our CEREC™ technology. The CEREC technology allows us to fabricate porcelain crowns and other restorations in one appointment. This will save the patient an extra visit to our office.

Dr. Shetter would like everyone to know that his corneal transplant surgery went well. His eye has healed and he has been back at the office on a limited basis. He and Jan plan to take the winter off and try to get in some real cruising on their trawler on the west coast of Florida. He will come back to work next spring on a limited schedule. He wants to thank everyone for their great response to Dr. Engelmann. Dr. Shetter and Jan wish everyone a happy holiday season and healthy new year.

Dr. Park and Dr. Engelmann are both members of the Greater Green Bay Study Club which is a spinoff of the Seattle Study Club. As members they are both part of a group including specialists, such as oral surgeons, endodontists,

orthodontists and periodontists. On a monthly basis they meet to review cases, share new techniques and discuss ways to better serve their patients.

You may notice that we have changed our manual tooth brushes to a GUM® brand brush. We are always trying to improve the care our patients receive. We welcome your comments on our new brushes whether it is a phone call or even a comment on our facebook® page. (New Up Dental)
