A Note From Dr. Shetter...

We left Menominee in September to begin a month long visit to South Africa in October. In 1994 we hosted a Rotary exchange student from the Cape Town area and have been trying to arrange a visit with her for several years. Our last get together was for her wedding ten years ago.

Charlotte now has a ten year-old son and is a director in an international software company. After leaving Menominee we

traveled to Florida where we met travel companions and then went on to London for a few days. From London we flew to South

Africa for a short safari near Krueger Park. After that we visited Charlotte and her family in Cape Town and visited the wine country nearby. We then traveled up the east coast to a town on the Indian Ocean called Knysna. This area of South Africa is a tourist destination very much like the east coast of the USA. Since seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere, we traveled during the spring time with lots of blooming flowers. We arrived back in Florida in November. What You Should Never Ignore...To stay healthy!

Cavities and gum disease can affect the way you look and feel, lead to missed days at work and school, and literally wear you down. It’s true – when harmful bacteria take over, you’re walking around with a permanent immune response which can cause problems throughout your mouth and body.

Both cavities and gum disease are caused by a buildup of nasty bacteria which forms plaque, the clear thin film you can feel on your teeth. To prevent problems, it must be removed thoroughly every day.

l Cavities are caused when bacteria feed on sugars left in your mouth after eating and produce acids which cause decay.

l Gum disease is caused when the plaque is allowed to harden and form into tartar, an unattractive yellow substance which can only be removed by a dental professional.

Here are 3 imporTanT sTeps To Take care of your mouTH:

1. Brush and rinse at least twice a day

2. Floss once a day

3. Keep your regularly scheduled dental appointments.

We can help you avoid extensive painful trauma – and with good oral health, even add years to your life! Maintain your regular hygiene appointments and call us immediately should you feel something may be amiss. We’ll take good care of you!

The Great Cover Up

you can afford!Often the same dental

materials we use to help save your smile and make it healthier can create a fantastic improvement in your appearance. For example, enamel-colored bonding material is so beautiful, versatile, and economical, we can use it for complete smile makeovers.

We can customize the color to match to your teeth and…

l update tired stained fillings at the front of your mouth

l replace older worn-down silver-colored fillings in the back

l correct chipped and cracked teeth

l cover stains and fill gaps between your teeth

l strengthen and support thinning, yellowing, or graying enamel.

Just think … in only one visit or a few, you can actually look younger, healthier … and as though you’ve never had any dental work done at all!

Gum disease can appear without symptoms, then lead to

swelling, sensitivity, and bleeding when you brush. Periodontitis,

the advanced stage of gum disease, can destroy your smile and

affect your overall health. Half of North Americans aged 30 and

over have mild, moderate, or severe periodontitis and among those

65 and older, the prevalence is 70%!

The main cause of gum disease is the buildup of plaque, but

other factors can affect the health of your gums. If you answer

“yes” to any of the following questions, it’s increasingly important

that you keep up your thorough home care routine and regular

recare appointments with us.

5 Key Questions ...That could change your life

National Dental Awareness Month

Each year in February or March, we celebrate National Dental Awareness Month by inviting the kindergarten classes from Menominee, Carney, and Stephenson to visit our Menominee/Daggett office.

Our dental hygiene staff introduces the steps to good oral hygiene and explains the benefits of eating healthy foods. The students are also given a tour of the office. In the operatories the dental assisting staff provides rides in the dental chair and shows the student’s pictures of teeth using an intraoral camera. The assistants also explained the different equipment that may be used during a visit to our office. The air/water syringe, the x-ray machine, and the “tooth polisher” were some of their favorites.

At the end of their visit they receive a goody bag with dental supplies to help keep those pearly whites clean.

Our goal is to bring awareness to improving children’s oral health and to let the students know that a trip to the dentist can be a fun and inviting experience.

Have you ever seen a teeth whitening tray or a sports mouthguard? Well, if you suffer from sleep apnea, an equally small, comfortable, custom-fitted device could be just the solution you’re looking for. While in the past Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) has been considered the gold standard therapy for obstructive sleep apnea, not everyone can tolerate the cumbersome device and simply won’t use it. That’s hazardous to their health.

Therapy with a portable custom-fitted oral appliance can be extremely helpful for a variety of apnea problems ranging from mild to severe – without surgery. Snoring noise is caused by vibrations of air moving through a

narrow airway. In apnea, the tongue and soft tissues relax and completely collapse the airway during sleep until breathing stops. The brain partially awakens them to restore breathing.

The key to successful treatment with your oral appliance is custom fitting so that it meets your unique needs and will maintain an open, unobstructed airway while you sleep by repositioning your lower jaw, tongue, and soft palate. It is an excellent alternative for many apnea patients and also for snorers whose problem has not improved

in spite of weight loss, avoidance of alcohol, quitting smoking or shifting their sleep position.

Wouldn’t you like to greet every day again feeling rested and re-energized? We’ll be happy to answer any of your questions about oral appliance therapy.

Congratulations Ladies!

We are privileged to have two employees celebrating milestones this year. Congratulations Karen Kohrt, we thank you for 40 years of dedication, loyalty, and skill. She has earned our respect and appreciation for devoting her entire dental assisting career to our office.

We would also like to recognize dental assistant LeeAnn LaPointe for all her efforts and commitments that she has shown us for the past 20 years.

We commend both of them for their outstanding efforts these past years and feel proud to have them on our team!
