LESSON OVERVIEW:The educator will explain that the topic of discussion is healthy drink options. Students will learn why they need to be concerned with the different types of sweetened beverages available. The students will learn how to determine the amount of added sugar in popular beverages and the importance of limiting added sugar in the diet. The students will also learn the key essential nutrients in dairy and why it is important to consume three servings daily. LEADER BACKGROUND:Milkprovidesapackageofninedifferentnutrients,includingcalcium,vitaminD,potassiumandprotein.Choosingthreeservingsoflow-fatorfat-freedairyfoodsevery day helps build strong bones and teeth and helps maintain a healthy heart. Low-fatandfat-freewhiteandfat-freeflavoredmilkisagreatwaytoreplacefluidsandfuelupafterstrenuousexercise.

TheMyPlatefoodguideprovidesagraphicrepresentationofahealthy,balanceddiet.ItwasdesignedasaneasytooltoremindAmericanstoeatallfivefoodgroupsintheproperportions.The2010DietaryGuidelinesforAmericanspolicyreporthighlightsthenutrientsofconcernwhicharepotassium,dietaryfiber,calcium,andvitaminD.

NutrientSubstances found in food that our bodies need to live, grow and stay healthy. The six classes of nutrients are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vita-mins, minerals, and water. There are more than 40differentnutrientswithmanydifferentfunc-tionsthatarerequiredforgoodhealth.

2.Askeachstudenttostatetheirfavorite drink. Then, ask them if they think their drink is healthy or unhealthy. Recordtheresultsontheboardforothers to see.
3.Discussthenegativehealtheffectsof too much added sugar in the diet: Excess“empty”caloriesinthedietleads to overweight and obesity, undernourishment, cavities and other healthproblems.Everyoneneedstochoose the right types of beverages to keep their bodies healthy.
4.Discussthehandouts“RethinkyourDrink”and“FuelupwithMilk.”Onecan see that milk is a powerhouse of key essential nutrients!
5.Reviewinstructionsforthework-sheets:“GuesstheAddedSugarAmount”and“HowmuchSugarisinMyDrink?”Allowtimeforclasstocom-plete on their own.
