Dr. Linda M. Abriola ’76 is a Drexel alumnaof civil engineering and the Dean of theSchool of Engineering at Tufts University.Dr. Abriola is the first female engineer toreceive the Engineering Leader of the YearAward and she will be honored for herleadership in environmental engineering, hercommitment to the National Academy ofEngineering (NAE), and her endlesscontributions to engineering in an effort toimprove today’s societal problems.

As Dean of the School of Engineering at Tufts, Dr. Abriola also holds a position as professor of civil and environmentalengineering and is an adjunct professor in chemical and biological engineering. Dr. Abriola is a member of the NAE and the American Academy of Arts and Sciencesand is a fellow of the American GeophysicalUnion. Prior to her appointment at Tufts, Dr. Abriola was the Horace Williams Kingcollegiate professor of environmentalengineering at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Abriola’s primary research focus is theintegration of mathematical modeling andlaboratory experiments for the investigationand prediction of the transport and fate ofreactive contaminants in the subsurface. Dr. Abriola is particularly known for her workon the characterization and remediation ofaquifers contaminated by chlorinated solvents.

Dr. Abriola’s numerous professional activitieshave included service on a number of majorfederal agency advisory boards including theU.S. Environmental Protection Agency, theU.S. Department of Energy, and the NationalResearch Council (NRC). Dr. Abriola servedon the NRC’s Committee on Ground WaterCleanup Alternatives, which was the firstNRC committee to investigate the efficacy of pump-and-treat technologies. Dr. Abriolawas also a part of the NRC’s Committee onGender Differences in Careers of Science,Engineering, and Mathematics Faculty. Dr. Abriola is currently an elected member of the NAE Council, the governing board of the NAE, and serves on two other NAEcommittees, the Committee on Science,Engineering, and Public Policy, and theIntegrated STEM committee, a new study of integrated science, technology, engineering,and mathematics education at the K-12 level.In addition, Linda serves on the NationalScience Foundation’s Directorate forEngineering Advisory Committee.

An author of more than 140 refereedpublications, Dr. Abriola has been therecipient of a number of awards, includingthe Association for Women Geoscientist’sOutstanding Educator Award (1996), theNational Ground Water Association’sDistinguished Darcy Lectureship (1996), andthe U.S. Department of Defense’s StrategicEnvironmental Research and DevelopmentProgram Project of the Year Award inEnvironmental Restoration (2006 and 2012).An ISI highly cited author in ecology/environment, Dr. Abriola was recognized inAmerican Women of Science Since 1900(ABC-CLIO, 2010), an encyclopedia focusedon 500 of the 20th century’s most notableAmerican women scientists.

Dr. Abriola holds doctoral and master’sdegrees in civil and environmentalengineering from Princeton University and abachelor’s degree in civil and environmentalengineering from Drexel University.
