Being kissed under the mistletoe has been a Christ-mas tradition for more than a thousand years. But mistle-toe is not only associated with a gentle kiss, it has a lore all its own. To the ancient Scandinavians, mistletoe symbol-ized peace. Enemies meeting under the mistletoe declared a truce until the following day. On a more domestic note, disgruntled spouses kissed and made up under the greenery. The Druids believed mistletoe possessed magical powers. Their priests cut the plant with golden sickles and gathered the trimmings on white cloth so the plant would never touch the earth and lose its enchantment. The French didn't like it. They said mistletoe was cursed be-cause it grew on the wood from which the cross of Christ was made and that it was doomed to be a rootless parasite forev-er.

In the Middle Ages, mistletoe was hung from ceilings in Eu-rope to ward off evil, or it was dangled over doors to prevent the entrance of witches. If mistletoe was suspended over a crib, the child was said to be safe from kidnapping.

Viking lore describes the goddess of love, Frigga, who made each plant and animal promise not to kill her son Baldur. She forgot the mistletoe plant and Baldur was killed by a spear made from it. The white berries on the mistletoe are said to have been created from her tears. When her son returned to life, Frigga proclaimed the mistletoe to be sacred. She kissed everyone who passed under it and decreed the plant should

henceforth bring love. This is said to be the origin of kissing under the mistletoe. So go ahead. Kiss under the mistletoe, have fun doing it, and give a nod to Frigga for starting a very enjoyable custom.

“Google Glass” will move into the workplace

Surgeon Christopher Kaeding wore one when performing a knee reconstruction. Using Glass's camera, he broadcast his view of the procedure to Ohio State University medical students seven miles away. "The students could see better. They can ask questions," he said. He spoke to them in real time

during the surgery. Kaeding had borrowed the Glass from a colleague who scored one of 10,000

preview units sold or given to schools in 2013. When Glass debuts in 2014, it will probably cost between $600 and $800.

Many new apps are in development for Glass, the next generation of connectivity. Software maker Evernote has developed a Google Glass note-

taking app, which will be used mostly in the workplace. What will they come up with next?

What type of mortgage do you advise?

There's no easy answer to your question. To get the most attractive rate

and terms on your next home loan, you'll need to compare options on several types of mortgages. Since each mortgage product is designed

to meet specific needs, I will help evaluate your particular wishes and circumstances in order to find the product that is just right for you. Interest rates are determined by the term of the loan, the amount of the down payment, and your credit score, among other factors. Fixed-rate home loans are typically available with terms of 15, 20, 30 or 40 years. Generally, lower interest rates are offered for mortgages with shorter terms. Adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) have a variety of terms. They include a lower up front rate, but that interest rate will increase during the life of the loan according to your contract or as market interest rates change. Mortgage companies have a wide variety of loans. Remember that if you are paying less than 20 percent down, you'll also be paying for mortgage insurance. FHA loans are fairly easy to get. While their mortgages haven't changed much, they do have their advantages: They have less-stringent qualification and credit requirements, and the required down payment is lower as well. The drawback is that they take longer to arrange and close than a loan from your local lender would.
