Drawing  Generic  skill  2

Duration: 12 days [February 17th – March1th2014]

Facilitator: Sonia Jose

Page 2: Drawing 2 pdf 2

Day  1 A page full of circles

A page full of triangles

Circles  of  different  sizes  and  applying   different  pressure  gave  a  hold  of  the  pencil in  drawing  continuous  line.

Triangles  of  different  sizes  have  straight  lines  which  allowed  us  to

make  rigid  lines  and  gave  a  space  to  explore  the  angles.

Page 3: Drawing 2 pdf 2

A page full of circles or triangles of the same size with thick and thin lines separately made me look at different tones of the same pencil. Also a sense of visual application of lines was observed by me very appropriately.

Page 4: Drawing 2 pdf 2

Exploring  continuous  lines  by  making  dark  to  light  and  light  to  dark  single  lines  by  swirling  forms  and  straight  lines  without  lifting  the  pencil  allowed  me

to  understand  pressure  of  the  same  medium  in  one  stroke.

Page 5: Drawing 2 pdf 2

My  medium  to  do  the  above  exercises  was  an  HB  pencil.

Page 6: Drawing 2 pdf 2

Drawing  parallel  lines  keeping  consistency  in  application  and  the  slightly  altering  application  in  terms  of  consistency,  pressure  and  spacing.

Page 7: Drawing 2 pdf 2

Continuous  parallel  lines  with  or  without  obstacles  in  pen  made  my  hade  more   comfortable  with  drawing  lines  accurately  and  increased  my  concentration  also

while  drawing  lines.

Page 8: Drawing 2 pdf 2

Line  drawings  of  many  objects  on  an  imperial  sheet  gave  an  initial  sense  of  composition.  It  even  included  an  observation  of  objects  while  drawing  them

quickly.  Adding  different  thickness  of  the  pencil  gave  it  a  3D  view.

Page 9: Drawing 2 pdf 2

Line  drawing  of  a  genre(shoe)  in  10   different  species  and  composing  them is  a  visually  appealing  way  was  an   interesting  exercise  because  it  included   drawing  skills  as  well  as  a  sense  of  space  to  build  a  composition.

Giving  different  tones  to  the  same  gave  it  a  3D  look.  Also  allowed  me  to  understand  different  tones  that  can  be  achieved  in  a  single  pencil.

Tracing  and  layering The first exercise using tracing paper we had to explore application of line by using different mediums as well as

altering pressure. I added tones to my image although that was not required. But then in the second composition I

could focus on line and making a whole new composition by various experiments of overlapping and layering using

contrasts in line. I experimented with the second composition in 3 stages. Img 2.1 was my first attempt where

by overlapping and layer I took different images and combined them. In img 2.2 I added more imaged to my

first image which did not quite work out. Them finally I used img 2.1 to make my third composition which was img 2.3. It

came out to be a very well balanced composition.

Quick sketches of human form was an exercise which was new for me as I am not very fond of drawing

human structures. But as I did these quick sketches I was able to capture essence proportions. I could

understand the basic structure of the human form and all the gestures that gives the human body a form.

These sketches were 2 min drawing each and done in 2 ways. Initially the person was standing still and we had to draw them and after that it was more about capturing that one moment of the persons gesture

and putting it down on paper. So we had limited time and so much to remember.

An  upside  down  drawing .

Draw  a  portrait  or  a  human  form  from  a  picture  that  is  turned  upside  down.  It  was  an  interesting  experience  and  gives  a  beRer  sense  of  line  and  negative-‐‑positive  in  an  image.  It  did  not  come  out  to  be  a  perfect  portrait  but  it  was  very  much  similar  to  the  image.

BeRy  Edward’s  ‘Drawing  from  the  right  side  of  the

brain’   This was an interesting exercise. I had a lot of fun

drawing with my left hand. It was all about hand eye coordination. In another exercise it was all about

observation with eyes and coordinating your hand likewise with intuition. It was not at all difficult but I way

of observation for me. I think it was more like a eye-hand coordination test for me. It was important to

understand how my left brain is more strong compared to my right side of the brain.

Day  4

Perspective  is  something  very  important  to  understand  while  drawing  and  because  I  have  never  learnt  about  it  this  exercise  was  a  good  way  for  me  to  start  with  this.  I  got  to  know  about  how  people  observe  from  different  angles  and  come  up  with  one  point,  two  point  or  more  perspectives  while  drawing  a

certain  space  indoor  or  outdoor.

Page 26: Drawing 2 pdf 2

Tone Grey  scale  exploration  gives  a  beRer  understanding  of  the  tones  from  a  single  medium.  After  doing  this  exercise  I  could  now  device  the  flexibility  of  one  color  tone.  It  gave  me  more  shades  of  a  single  color  which  I  thought  couldn’t  be  there.  Applying  this  table  I  made  objects  with  as  many  tones  as  possible.  Earlier  I  used  to  use  one  pencil  and  complete  my  drawing.  But  now  when  I  know  how  different  pencils  work  I  use  the  darkest  6B  to  lightest  2H  in  most  my  sketches.

Day  5/6 Drawing  the  human  form  separately  gave  a  sense  of  structure,  proportions  and  composition  while  placing  it  on  a  single  sheet  of  paper.  The  different  exercises  involved  one  figure  on  one  page,  two  figures  on  one  page  and  three  figures  on

one  page.

Page 32: Drawing 2 pdf 2

Drawing  the  same  thing  from  different  angles  give  a  basic  composition  and  a  sense  of  placing  the  objects  on  paper.  And  detailed  rendering  of  the  bags  gave  more  basic  knowledge  about  tones  and  lines.  Giving  the  texture  of  a  cloth  was  a

challenge  but  it  was  very  much  interesting  as  I  used  many  tones  of  grey.

Day  7

Studying  line  and  tone  in  drawing  keeping  in  mind  form,  proportions,  contrasts  and  composition

Page 34: Drawing 2 pdf 2

Black  card  drawing

This  was  one  the  most  interesting  work  because  the  whole  style  was  changed.  Usually  we  draw  on  white  in  black,  but  drawing  on  black  card  in  white  was  totally  different.  I  think  this  was  because  the  part  that  we  used  to  sketch  becomes  the  part  we  don’t  sketch  now,  we  leave  it  black.  More  of  observations  and  more  of  hand-‐‑eye  coordination.  I  could  use  another  darker  shade  of  black  but  as  an  image  it  came  out  to  be  a  perfect  drawing.

Page 36: Drawing 2 pdf 2

Day  8 Textures Tone,  lines  and  textures

together    was  explored  in  this  exercise.  I  tried  two  organic  and  two  inorganic  objects.  I  found  organic  objects  to  be  easier  may  be  because  the  texture  is  more  lively  and  interesting  which  gives  the  objects  some  kind  of  smoothness  and  visual  appeal.

Preparatory  drawings

Page 40: Drawing 2 pdf 2

Still  life The  still  life  is  all  about  observations  and  copying  down  what  you  see.  I  did  this  detailed  study  of  a  still-‐‑life  with  3  -‐‑4  objects  of  my  choice  to  bring  out  my  understanding  of  contrasts  in  line,  tone,  texture  proportions  and  composition.  I  figured  out  I  am  good  with  tone  but  weak  with  form  and  appropriate  lines.  The  composition  was  also  very  important.  Arranging  the  still  life  and  composing  it  on  paper  was  something  I  learned.  And  one  problem  that  I  largely  faced  was  the  movement  of  objects  thrice.

Full  Imperial  size  drawing

Page 41: Drawing 2 pdf 2

Day  10   A half imperial size detailed drawing incorporating tones/textures of a human figure. This was from live and I tried to complete it in 10 min. The proportions were fairly fine. This activity was necessary for me as to understand how to compose a human form on paper and also how tones work when the canvas in enlarged.

The 100 sketches I did were of human body. I am not fond of making them so it became my weak point

and now I wanted them to be perfect. So I chose to make these sketches. I am fine with proportions of

objects but human proportions are not my cup of tea. So I tried to do that and practice the same as much as possible. To me this was a great opportunity. There

are still problem with my form and lines whilst sketching but maybe if I continue doing that I could

improve on that too.

Page 51: Drawing 2 pdf 2

Final  Day When  the  graphite  touches  the  blank  sheet  of  paper  there  is  a  thought  of  something  coming  up  on  the  canvas.  And  when  it  is  not  the  same  it  probably  weakens  your  aspirations.  I  love  drawing  and  I  am  doing  that  since  2  years  now.  But  this  course  was  very  necessary  to  build  up  my  skills  and  improve  my  quality  of  work.  It  was  of  great  help  as  I  was  drawing  on  my  own  but  needed  a  skillful  support  for  my  mistakes  to  come  across.  And  it  did.  So  my  lines,  form  and  human  proportions  is  something  I  need  to  work  upon  more  than  my  tones  and  gradations  which  are  at  par  fine.  This  course  allowed  me  to  know  what  I  knew  but  I  couldn’t  figure  out.
