’n Bitter lang wag vir siekes by hospitaalDEVIDEAN MOSES

Generous donation to VEP programmeTheDownstreamWomen’sNetwork (DAWN) of ShellSouth Africa, visited PaarlPolice on Friday wherethey made a generous do-nation to the Paarl VictimEmpowerment Pro-gramme (VEP).

According to StationCommander, BrigadierNeville Malila, the dona-tion consisted of caregiverpacks consisting of neces-sities as well as toiletries,non-perishable groceriesand clothing to give to vic-tims in case of need.

The donation was ac-cepted by Malila, VEP co-ordinator, sergeant Sa-mantha Smith and volun-teers.

Shell SA was represent-ed by Celetia Charles andLetitia Faure. Charles saidthat most of the clothing and other items werecollected and donated by Shell SA employeesin their Cape Town office. They also handeda small gift to all the volunteers.

During the programme one of the volun-teers, Zuleka Maquma, described the servicesoffered at the centre and the type of care pro-vided to victims.

Victims of crime, especially those of sexualoffences and family-related violence, are re-

ferred to the Victim Support Room for assist-ance. It is at this centre where victims can talkopenly and are put at ease before their state-mentsaretaken.Arrangementsformedicalas-sistance when needed, is also made at the cen-tre.

Malila further said there is an excellentworking relationship between the local policeand the volunteers.

Two of the recent survivors of crime that

were assisted by the victimsupport volunteers, toldtheir stories and thankedthe police and volunteers fortheir help. The women arestill receiving assistanceand counselling from the po-lice and volunteers, and aspart of the referral pro-gramme, both were placed atthe AHOS centre in PaarlEast, where they are receiv-ing further assistance.

Smith indicated that the10 volunteers at Paarl Policereceive an average of 20 peo-ple in the centre per monthwho’s ages range from 18years onwards. Some ofthem at times visit the cen-tre with babies in their armsand shelter must then be ar-ranged for them. Most refer-rals are victims in family vi-olence incidents.

Sheapplaudthevolunteers fortheworktheydo and the passion they do it with – free ofcharge.

Malila thanked the representatives of ShellSA for their generous donation which he saidwill be used to assist victims of crime in theVictim Support Room. He mentioned that theprogramme is dear to everyone’s heart andthe prevention of violence directed to womenand children is a key priority of the police.

Volgens Maxwell se tannie, Sandra Williams(31), was die rede vir die treurspel onduidelik-heid oor die vaderskap van Maxwell.

field in South Africa with recent re-search showing that demand faroutstrips supply in South Africa.Eric Swarts, a local organic farm-

at the Sustainability Institute says:“Nationally youth unemploymentsits at around 60%. But, statistical-ly, a young adult with some form oftertiary qualification is six timesless likely to be unemployed thanonewithoutmatric. This highlightsthe need to train young people in ar-eas where there is a skills shortage.“Our vision for this programme

is to create a supportive environ-ment in which youth, who wouldotherwise battle to find any form ofmeaningful employment, can em-bark on a skills development jour-ney. This not only sets them on ameaningful career path but alsohelps to make agriculture and thewider food systemmore sustainablein the long run. Drakenstein Gazette General - Algemeen Friday 3 April 20154

SSttaarr SSiiggnnssStar Signs22 December to21 JanuaryCAPRICORN

You have an abundance of physical energy and self-confidence right now and can take on new projects and

challenges with ease. You feel bolder and lessdependent on others' affirmation and approval. Taking

a strong stand or striking out on your own in somemanner is likely to work out well for you.

21 January To20 FebruaryAQUARIUS

This is not a period when you feel like pushing your own interestsor one in which you are especially energetic. Other people's

concerns and needs receive more attention from you now, and youare more motivated to do something which serves others, perhapsa group you are affiliated with. Cooperating with others for some

idealistic purpose is very satisfying for you at this time.

20 February to21 MarchPISCES

You are likely to come up with a clever solution or a veryworkable plan, especially if you brainstorm with others. You

also tend to make up your mind very quickly and decisively nowand to translate your ideas into action. You can't stand beingidle now; you are ready for challenging, intellectual activities

and attacking difficult problems on the job.

21 March to21 AprilARIES

This is a good time to travel, especially to places you'venever experienced before, where you will be exposed tonew ideas and different ways of looking at the world.Studying new concepts is also favored; your ability tounderstand abstract ideas and your desire to grow

intellectually is strong now.

21 April to21 MayTAURUS

You seesaw between caution and impatience, which generates a greatdeal of stress and inner anguish. You may blame your feelings ofoppression and barely contained hostility on an unjust situation, acorrupt society, or your childhood conditioning (any or all of whichmay be valid) but it is your choices and your own internal struggles

which are the real issue at present.

22 June to23 JulyCANCER

Your amorous feelings and passions are strong andcompelling at this time, and you tend to be very demanding

of a lover's energy and affection. Tensions may erupt inclose relationships because one of you feels that you havebeen giving more and not receiving enough in return, or

one of you is more amorous than the other.

21 May to22 JuneGEMINI

A fast pace, with many letters, phone calls, errands, meetings,or discussions, is on the agenda. You may feel mentally

restless, impatient, and overly eager to get your own ideasacross. Also, a situation may arise which requires you to saywhat is on your mind, to make a decision, or to clearly voice

your personal opinion on some issue.

23 Julie to24 AugustLEO

You are fascinated by the mysterious now. Unsolved orpuzzling problems and the hidden or behind the scenes

aspects of a situation interest you most, and you delve andprobe until you discover the truth. An interest in

psychology or other peoples' secrets comes to the fore. Youenjoy spy, mystery, and supernatural stories.

24 August to23 SeptemberVIRGO

Your choices and decisions may lack prudence, realism, or soundjudgment right now. Be wary of overly optimistic plans which are

presented to you, signing contracts without doing thoroughbackground work or reading the fine print, or promising somethingwhich will be difficult for you to fulfill. Questions of honor, ethics, law,

or morality arise in your mind at this time.

23 September to23 OctoberLIBRA

Don't just sit and wait for your ship to come in. You mayhear about opportunities and possibilities at this time and

wonder whether you should take the time to look into them.Don't overlook any opportunity that comes your way nowbecause at this time it is more likely to prove worthwhile

that at most other times.

23 October to23 NovemberSCORPIO

You are very congenial and cooperative now and more interested inthe similarities than in the differences between yourself and others. This is a very good time to let people know you care about them:send a card, write a note of appreciation or even a love letter! Youmay also want to buy something beautiful, pleasing, and frivolous

which simply makes you feel good.

23 November to22 DecemberSAGITTARIUS

Your needs for love, companionship, friendship, and sharing are very strong now, and you won'twant to be alone or go off to do solitary work. In

fact, you feel like relaxing and enjoying thebeautiful side of life rather than laboring or

concentrating on difficult tasks.

You the entrepreneur: Spottingbusiness opportunitiesDAVID MALHERBE

Many people say “I wouldlovetostartmyownbusiness, but I do not know what kindof business to do.” There aredifferentwaysto lookintothematter, but some guidelinesmay just help you to move inthe right direction.

Sometimes it is worthwhile tolook for kinds of work that mostpeople are reluctant to do, andyou can do business by offeringthat service. Because people do not like todo it, they are usually willing to pay some-body else to do it for them, for examplecleaning services or removing gardenrefuse.

One can also look at the quality of prod-ucts or services. Say you look at washingpegs and you know that you have the skilltoproducebetterqualitypegs thantheonesavailable, it means the possibility for abusiness exists. Or you are not satisfiedwith the service you receive from your gar-den services company and you know youcan do a better job.

Or be on the lookout for a specific prob-lem or need for which many people do notreally have a solution. Maybe they have a

need for transport to the airport or to haveelectric equipment repaired, like hair dryers, washing ma-chines, etc. If you have the abili-ty or skills to supply the need,it may become your business.

One of the most important as-pects though to consider, iswhether your business willmatch your personality andwhether you have adequateskills and experience to supplyqualityproductsand/orservicein the particular kind of busi-ness.

It will not work to start a food-relatedbusiness like baking or catering if you hatethe idea of working in a kitchen. Similarly,do not consider building cupboards if youare not at all practical.

Second to personality and skill, is to con-sider whether there is a market and a needfor what you would like to offer or produce. There must be a need for large enoughquantities of your product or service at areasonable profit to make for a viable busi-ness.
