the message given to the business sec-tor by Mr Tokyo Sexwale, the premierof Gauteng, during a Sunday luncheonheld in the Carletonville Civic Centre. He said that it was imperative for Car-letonville to broaden the base of its eco-nomy and not to overlook even thesmallest trader or hawker, as they allformed a vital part in the process ofsuccessfully revitalizing and recon-structing a vibrant community.

wat hierdie kindertjies by my ontvang.

Everyone wants to be rememberedafter they cease to exist.

It is everyone’s duty to make surethat they are a blessing or a gift toothers while they are still alive. Ma-king a mark does not necessarily me-an that you must be a “celebrity” ora very famous somebody because itis not about how well known you are.

Rather, it is a matter of how youuse your time on this earth to impactother people’s lives, and the valueyou have amongst those around you.

Sometimes, people seem to missthe very essence of life. We drift sofar away with our own problems orambitions that we forget that we arehere to just live, above everything el-se. We have somehow disconnectedfrom the simple things of nature andwe place our attention on things that

do not lead us to happiness. In my ana-lysis, most people do notlive to benefit a majority, itis all about their personalambitions.

There are fewer indivi-duals who want to be “he-roes” of the country be-cause modern-day life ischannelled into a specificroutine of “survival”. Lifeis more about survivingthan actually living to thefullest, doing the thingsyou love and making a dif-ference in your own way.

In my own observationsI think that reality hasbeen replaced with toomuch fantasy, peoplechoose to ignore the realissues that are tearing humanity downand more emphasis is being placed on

entertainment. People would ratherspend their time ha-ving fun than volun-teer to help others ordo something positive.

If you want to makeyour mark in thisworld, you have to so-mehow place other pe-ople above yourself. You need to sacrificeyour time, energy andthoughts on someoneelse besides you. It ta-kes someone with a ve-ry big and special he-art to devote themsel-ves in that manner andsometimes, that iswhere the fountains ofjoy are found - in self-

less acts where you have been willingto compromise yourself.

Maybe life is not that bad. In myanalysis, it is not bad at all. It is peo-ple who make it complicated. Our li-ves are so complex that we forgetwhat the whole thing is about. We arealways in a state of worry, and stresscan make even the person with thekindest heart, cruel.

We could make it easier with kind-ness and humility. These are the bestway of making a mark because, whenyou are nice to others, you heal themspiritually and give them some formof hope to go forward.

Everyone can make a mark in so-meone else’s life. The question is,what kind of mark do you want toleave? Whether it is a scar or a smile, depends on you alone.

Start where you are, with a sim-ple, “Hi, and how are you today?

Don’t hold back. Play your partand make your mark.

Let’s talk about it -Make yourmark in theworld

reeds in ongelukke dood.

mense se lewens in ‘n oogwinkonherroeplikkan verandernie.

Wysneus se kollega was só stomge-

vullis in oop erwe huishoudelike vullis

Stones went flying as Extension 5 resi-dents, who are unhappy with munici-pal service, once again blocked the ro-ad between Oberholzer and Welver-diend on Tuesday. One of the angry residents said they

closed the road at about 08:00 on Tu-esday morning to show their unhappi-ness with the service they are receivingfrom the Merafong City Local Munici-pality.“Some people have been staying in

Ext. 5 for two to three years but stilldon’t have electricity. We have also notreceived dustbins at all,” one of the pe-ople taking part in the march told theHerald.“Many of the people who stay here

have the money to pay for electricity. We have also heard that there is a go-vernment subsidy for those who aretoo poor to pay for basic electricity,”the protester went on.He said the roads in the area are also

in a bad state, especially when it rains, and there are no sports facilities oropen grounds where children can playsports.Residents also complain that, while

contractors in the area do employ lo-cal people, residents of the areas inwhich the work is physically done, donot benefit from these employment

opportunities.When the Herald’s journalist arri-

ved at the scene in Welverdiend atabout 10:15, a large group of protes-ters had blockade the road that leadsto Oberholzer. There were no policeor traffic officers to warn motorists atthat time, and vehicles travelling overthe railway tracks on their way to Wel-

verdiend were also stoned.“It can’t carry on like this. The residents ofWelverdiend are be-

ing held hostage in our own homes be-cause the protesters block off the roadto, and out of, town,” said one Welver-diend resident who had had an en-counter with the protesters, later themorning. According to a protester to

whom the newspaper spoke, their aimwas to keep the road closed until so-meone from the municipality came tolisten to them and attend to their grie-vances. As far as could be determined, the road was already open again byWednesday morning. The municipali-ty had not answered questions aboutthe matter by printing time.

Dit was eers toe ‘n kollega,me. Annett

keerdelike diskonneksie by Wulfs-

A new project is helping young peopleto improve their skills so that they candeveloped agriculture in the area. The Primary Agriculture Short Skills

project is currently taking place at theKhutsong Youth Development Centreand it is a special agricultural projectaiming to benefit some 150 unemploy-ed Grade 9-12 youngsters from Khuts-ong, Wedela and Kokosi townships. The project commenced on Monday,

16 March. The Marang Incorporaedare the project owners, appointed bythe Gauteng Department of Education(GDE) and the agricultural training isdone by an accredited training provi-der from Shoshanguve at Tshwane. The aim of the project is to bridge the

unemployment gap in theGauteng Pro-vince through activation of structuredand meaningful training interventionsthat provide sustainability and quasi-employment for peripheral or semi-ru-ral communities such as Merafong. The short coursewill run for approx-

imately three months, after which thelearners will be trained in forming co-operatives to run sustainable agricul-tural processing businesses that canhopefully support them for the rest oftheir lives..A hundred and fifty unemployed yo-

uthswere identified through communi-cation with Mike Msukwini, the youthcoordinator based at theMerafongmu-nicipality. Theywere then inducted andrequested to fill bursary applicationforms, which were submitted to theGDE for processing.Once approved, the learners were in-

formed about their bursaries, enrolled

by both Marang Inc. and the GRCA(Gauteng City Region Academy) afterwhich the training commenced. The criteria used to select the indivi-

duals who are currently in the trainingprocess was evaluated by their age andonly unemployed young people from18 to 25 years were allowed to partici-pate in the programme. Some of the key subjects in the cour-

se course builds academic knowledgeand theory integratedwith thepracticalskills and values necessary for self-ful-filment and meaningful participationin society as citizens of a free country. It also provides access to further lear-ning in a specific vocational sector cho-

sen by the learner and facilities thetransition of learners from formal edu-cation to the workplace. After completing the course, lear-

ners will receive certificates. The project focuses on primary agri-

culture.The GCRA, through the training,

contributes to the reduction of unem-ployment and enables the school lea-vers and youths who are out of schooland those already employed by theGauteng provincial government andmunicipalities to becomehighly skilledofficials who can provide outcomes-fo-cused service delivery in the provinceand bring life to the slogan “Akushesh-

we” meaning “let’s make a move on”.Their future plans are to turn Mera-

fong into an agricultural productionprocessing hub, as per mandate of theWest Rand District Municipality as an-nounced by Lebogang Maile, the MECfor Local Economic Development ofGauteng, at the recently-held GautengAgricultural summit.According to the organisers the start

of the Primary Agriculture is a sign ofgood things to come out of the Mera-fong grid, to support and eradicateunemployment through sustainabletraining interventions that lead to occu-pational excellence and employment.

The Merafong City Local Municipalityhas, for the first time, openly discus-sed the fact that it is experiencing fi-nancial difficulties.

During her recent State of the CityAddress, the executive mayor, Ma-phefo Mogale Letsie, acknowledgedthat the municipality is struggling topay the bills.

“This is due to a number of reasons, butmainly because of the negative out-come of the mines’ appeals,” she said.

TheHerald has previously reportedthat mining houses in the area have ta-ken themunicipality to court over pro-perty valuations that they consider tobe excessive.

The mayor said the matter had ta-ken 18 months to finalise, after whichthe valuation appeal board found in fa-vour of the mines in November.

“This has resulted in a R12 milliondecrease in revenue per month, andthe matter has been taken up for re-view,” she said.

She also pointed out that Blyvoor

Gold Mine currently owes the munici-pality about R170million, and that thepayment rate for municipal serviceshas dropped by about 20 percent overthe past two years. The biggest challenges of credit

control come from areas such as Ko-kosi, Khutsong, Wedela and Green-spark,where residents are reluctant topay for services.Themunicipality’s difficult financial

situation once again came to the foreduring a council meeting on Tuesday. As Council discussed the proposed

first draft of the 2015/16 budget, DAcouncillor, Blackie Zwart, expressedhis concern over how this significantloss of incomewould affect themunici-pality’s operations. Not only is there expected to be a re-

duction in the number of essential va-cancies that will be filled, there is unli-kely to be a budget for training of per-sonnel.The capital and maintenance bud-

gets will also have to be reduced tosuch an extent that service deliverywillsuffer.

Residents of Khutsong Extension 3are complaining that the area’s sewe-rage problems are still far from over.

Earlier this year, residents com-plained, forweeks, about huge sewageleaks inmany of Extension 3’s streets. After they got worse, residents took tothe streets in protest.

According to the Merafong City Lo-cal Municipality, the problems stem-med from a sinkhole that damaged amunicipal sewage pipeline.Although the sewage problems in

the streets were cleared up, residentsonce again complained earlier in theweek that all was not well aroundHlanganani Primary School. This has been the site where there

have been many instances of groundsagging, mostly as a result of badly-built municipal sewerage pipelines.

About three years ago a big sinkho-le fell in opposite the school’smain ga-te. Two sinkholes also appeared next

to the school toward the end of last ye-ar. The newest one which, accordingto themunicipality, was the reason forthe sewage chaos in the rest of Exten-sion 3 earlier this year, also appearedin the same area near the school.MrChukuKerileng from theKhuts-

ong Crisis and Development Resoluti-onCommittee, also stays inExtension3.He says residents are worried that

a massive sewage leak from amanho-le near the school is going to causeeven more sinkholes.

When the Herald visited the site onMonday morning, a strong stream ofsewage was flowing from a manhole, which looks as if it had been delibera-tely opened, into a man-made trench. The trench channelled the sewage

from the site in a southerly direction.A group of workers were busy at thesite at the time of the newspaper’s vi-sit.

“The contractor anticipates thatthe sewage pipeline will be completed

by 13 April 2015 if everything goes ac-cording to schedule. The area hasbeen isolated and a honeysucker(truck) is on site to prevent sinkholes

from forming on a regular basis,” aspokesperson of the Merafong CityLocal Municipality told the Herald onTuesday.

Residents worried about new sewage leak(truck) is on site to prevent sinkholes Tuesday.

Compensation for miners who havecontracted tuberculosis (TB) duringthe course of their work was one of themain issues raised by speakers duringaWorld TBDay event thisweek.

World TB Day is cele-brated annually on 24March and a function lin-ked to this event was heldat Sibanye Gold’s KloofMine last Saturday. Vari-ous speakers highlightedissues related to the linkbetween this deadly, butcurable disease and mi-ning.

“In the past TB spreadunchecked in the mines.Mines put lots of moneyinto the development ofassets, but not into thedevelopment of their hu-man assets,” the firstspeaker of the event, la-bour representative MrBokang Lethala of the NUM(National Union of Mine-workers) told those who at-tended.

“We want TB fatalities tobe treated in the same way as other mi-ning fatalities becausemanyminers getthe disease through their work. Fami-lies must receive compensation. Mi-ners who lose their hearing as a resultof taking TB medication must also becompensated for it,” he continued.

They main speaker of the event, Dr

Patrick Osewe of the World Bank, alsosaid that a lack of compensation forthose who contract TB is one of themain issues in dealing with the diseasein mines.

He said that the World Bank is con-cerned about the link between mining

and TB and has, for thisreason, established vari-ous actions in countriesthat are part of the SADC(Southern African Deve-lopment Community) tocombat thedisease. The-se include ensuring thatthe same TB treatmentis given to patients in allSADCcountries so that amineworkerwho goes tohis home in a neighbou-ring country on holidaydoes not develop resis-tance to his TB treat-ment because he doesnot have access to hismedication. An effort isalso underway to ensurethat all known TB pa-

tients can be traced, even af-ter leaving the mines wherethey were first diagnosed.

“The fight against TB re-quires very strong collabo-

ration between governments, unions, mines and other institutions,” saysOsewe.

In order to help fight TB, the WorldBank has already given millions ofrands and is considering a proposaldrawn up by countries and institutionsfighting thedisease. Theywant tomake

an additional R600million available tofight the disease, he says. The WorldBank has also pledged an additionalR700million to the cause. World Bankfunding has helped set up a one-stopservice centre for current and formermine workers at Carletonville Hospi-tal.

Speaking on behalf of SibanyeGold,a member of its executive committee,Mr Shadwick Bessit, said Sibanye ack-nowledges the various problems. It isbusywith an action to ensure thatmostemployees are screened and tested,

and also receive treatment every year. The mine also ensures that TB medici-nes are used until every possible em-ployee is cured.

As part of the event, John Motole,a Sibanye employee that has been cu-red, discussed how his employer hadassisted him to be treated and cured.Motole, together with other speakers, called on all mine workers to make su-re that they are tested regularly and, iftesting is positive, to ensure that theydiligently stickwith their treatment un-til they are cured.

‘Minersmust be compensated for TB and related problems’

The Sibanye Gold choir opened the event.

Dr Patrick Osewe ofthe World Bank wasthemain speaker during the event.

The North West Winter League started recentlyand the Fochville Squash Club was eager to getgoing in their defense of their position as ReserveLeague Champions.

The team was hosted by PCC5 at the PotchCountry Club. What looked like an easy night forthe guests at the start had them worried towardsthe end of the first game. First up was GerhardPretorius from Fochville against Sanet Meiring. Af-ter two almost non contested games Gerhard wason his way to a 3-0 win, but Sanet had other ideas. She fought back to win the next two games, tyingthe match at 2-2 with one game left to decide the

outcome of the match. In a nail biting finish, whichsaw the last game swing both ways, firstly in Ger-hard’s favor and then into Sanet’s favor, it eventu-ally Gerhard that claimed the last game and wonthe match 3-2 for Fochville.

The next three games all went in favor of Foch-ville 3-0, but also with some resilience from thePotchefstroom players as they nearly claimed a ga-me or two from the Fochvillers. Mark Metcalfe be-at Bennie van Wyk, Wouter Nel beat a previousteam mate Albert Schutte and Gavin Haringtonagain proved to be too strong for Philip Schle-busch. The final evening saw Fochville return ho-me with a full allocation of 16 points for the night, while PCC5 earned two.

Members of Kaizer Chiefs recently visi-tedMerafong in the first of many outre-aches to develop young soccer playersin the area.

Three u.17 teams from the Mera-fong area recently had the opportunityto play against their junior KaizerChiefs counterparts during a specialevent held by the Carletonville FootballClub at the PopoMolefe Stadium in Ko-kosi.

The teams, consisting of playersfrom Carletonville, Fochville, Kokosiand Blybank, were also coached by theChiefs visitors during the course of theday.

The visitors, headed by KaizerChiefs’ head of youth development,Kenneth “Conti” Kubheka, played 40-minute games against the local teams.

Although the local youngsters sho-wed much talent, they had to concedetheir games with scores of 1 - 0, 2 - 0and 1 - 0 to the strong Chiefs visitors.

“We cannot have a strong nationalteam if young players, especially thosefrom townships, are not developed. It

is also high time that schools get moreinvolved in soccer again,” ‘Coach Conti’told the Herald during his visit. He saidthe visit toKokosiwas only one ofmanyto come, as Kaizer Chiefs has develo-ped a good relationship with Carleton-ville Football Club.

‘CoachConti’ is well respected in thesoccer community, not only as the for-mer team coach of the u.23 nationalteam, but also as national director, technical manager and coach educati-on manager of SAFA (South AfricanFootball Association).

The relationship between the twoclubs started after one of the Carleton-ville FC coaches, Albert Kometsi, is aformer professional player who hadpreviously been coached by ‘CoachConti’.

One of the other coaches, TebogoKeitebetse, said this led to representa-tives of Kaizer Chiefs also travelling toCarletonville to attend the officiallaunch of Carletonville FC last year.Carletonville FC, which trains at Carle-ton Jones High School, said it wouldlike to get more talented young playersinvolved in future trainingmatches and

sessions with Kaizer Chiefs.“Wewould like to expose kids inMe-

rafong to better training and experien-ces that come with playing and beingcoached by the Chiefs visitors. We real-ly believe that there is huge talentamong local players and our aim is forsome of them to be identified, and ta-ken up by Chiefs,” Keitebetse told theHerald.

He called on parents to becomemo-re involved and supportive of their chil-

dren’s soccer activities, a view whichwas reiterated by Conti.

“I have many parents phoning andaskingme to look out for their childrenduring trials. But, when I ask themwhat positions their boys play, theycan’t answer me. It is a disgrace,” hesaid during the visit.

People who would like to get in con-tact with Carletonville FC can phoneKeitebetse at 081 040 1486 or Kometsiat 083 690 7184.
