The aim of this project was to apply the recommendations of a Safety Hazard Study of the Dragline. The primary aim was to satisfy the requirements of AS1657, the Australian Standard for Fixed platforms, walkways, stairways and ladders. CMP Engineers provided complete Project Management including:
• Initial consultations with Tarong Maintenance staff;
• Development of budget for project;
• Preliminary design;
• Presentation of designs to Tarong staff; Completion of designs;
• Design for fabrication;
• Supervision of fabrication and delivery to site;
• Supervision of installation during routine shutdown July 1996.

The major component of this project was to replace completely the existing stairway system on the Dragline Boom which failed to satisfy AS1657 on many counts. The new stairway system was designed to meet the Standard and also to be installed in a two week period during a routinely scheduled maintenance shutdown.

Another requirement was to design a stairway to access the roof of the Dragline. These stairs provide access to a doorway via an auxiliary platform used for entering the house. From inside the house a new walkway for accessing an overhead crane and lights can be reached.

Other modifications not shown here include:
• Platform for inspecting boom foot.
• New walkways on roof of house.
• Walkway at rear of house.
• Walkways over propel gear.
• Platforms in lube room.
• Raised walkway over drag ropes.
Other aspects of the project requiring design and supervision included:
• Guards for the MG Sets.
• An access system within the house around the Drag & Hoist Motors.
• Platforms for inspecting welds on the front wall.
