Sorting out of desirable fish seed from mixed collection made from field at early fry stage is a cumbersome job.

Fish seed collection centres are located at faraway places, so there are problems for transportation as well as there is high mortality.

Dearth of fish seed for stocking ponds is a persistent problem

Major carps do not breed in confined waters as they are essentially riverine fishes.

“The process of producing quality fish seed by inducing major carps to breed in ponds by use of pituitary

hormone injections is called as INDUCED BREEDING”

1. Collection of eggs is a cumbersome process.

1. During collection, unwanted fish spawns arealso collected.

1. Survival of hatchlings up to fry stage is poor.

1. Pituitary gland secretes the FSH and the LH which play animportant role in the development and maturity of gonadsleading to spawning in fishes.

1. External environmental factors like Temperature, rain waterand light induce these hormones to be released, thusregulating the reproductive cycle of the fish.

1. POTENCY OF PITUITARY GLAND – greatest in the ripe fishand almost nil when the fish has spawned, therefore thecollection of pituitary starts at the begining of the maturityseason.

1. Preferably from a fresh fish.

2. Donor should be of same species again preferably

3. Damage to the pituitary should beminimum.

4. Preservation in absolute alcohol – Changes for longerpreservation.

5. To make injections, glands put on a filter paper, dried, weighed and then homogenized. Distilled water is used tomake the solution. Weight of gland and volume is recorded.
