Cancer is Not a Death Sentence! : Keep Vigilance on Your Health!

Moment we see our cancer positive report, we are half dead, not because of cancer but because of psychological fear and economic constraints of cancer treatment. Besides remarkable advancements in the diagnosis and treatment, cancer is still embracing millions of peoples across the world. Perhaps, this is the second most common life taking disease after cardiovascular disorders in the world. Comparatively the west world has more incidence of variety of cancers as compared to India, for example, overall 23% deaths accounts due to cancer in USA as compared to 7% deaths in India. It is speculated that the world’s population will reach to 7.5 billion by the year 2020 and the forecast predicts that around 15.0 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed, out of which around 12.0 million cancer patients may succumb to death. The incidence of cancer in India is estimated to be approximately 2.5 million (we have no effective National cancer registry system), out of which around 8.0 laks new registries with 5.5 lakhs mortality per annum. Therefore in near future the number of cancer patients will dramatically increase in the developing and under developed countries, which perhaps may cross 70%. Surprisingly the incidence of cancer sufferings in the Indian Sub-continent have been strongly associated with poor to moderate living standards of our people having poor medical facilities (Govt. agencies should take note of these facts)

As long as we diagnose the cancer in early stage and refer it for treatment, we can certainly save life, however if we delay in diagnosis (there are several factors involved in delay) and refer the patient in advanced stage of cancer (post metastasis), perhaps we may succeed in giving few months or at the most a year’s bonus life to the patient. Therefore we all should be alert, aware and very actively engage our self in regulating and monitoring our own health before cancer make a guerrilla attack. In this task, individuals, society, medical facilitation agencies, government health agencies, media etc. should join hands together for effective management of this dangerous life ending disease. Govt. of India should priorities development of early diagnosis and awareness programmes and refers the patients for treatment.

Unfortunately, nature has given promise of survival to cancer cells as well and that to in an uncontrolled manner. Tumor is behaving like a heterogeneous colony of different cells, which

are constantly undergoing mutations, eliminating the non surviving cells, overall obeying the Darwin’s theory of "Survival of the fittest". Variety of cells in the tumor body are equipped and trained for the welfare and sustainable tumor growth. These educated cancer cells takes care of cancer survival even under the influence of present day cancer chemotherapy, what we commonly call as drug resistance.

On the eve of emerging clonal heterogeneity and drug resistance towards the present day chemotherapy, our lab is interested in understanding how cancer cells survive under the treatment of natural products especially dietary Flavonoids and we are interested to know whether flavonoids have any role in combating drug resistance ? We have tested series of dietary flavonoids as effective agents in inhibiting tumor angiogenesis. Flavonoids are rich in fruits and vegetables and this natural group has been to be effective in demonstrating various biological activities against variety of therapeutic targets. We have evaluated series of multi hydroxylated Flavonoids as possible inhibitors of cancer cells in general and inhibitors of tumor angiogenesis in particular. We have published our finding in reputed journals like Nature-Oncogenesis (Nature Publications), Cell Biochemistry & Biophysics, Eur. J. Pharmaceutical Sciences, Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, BBA Cancer, AAPham Sci etc.

Basic flavonoid scaffold

Structures of potential anti-cancer flavonoids Our lab is interested in understanding how cancer cells acquire drug resistance towards

present day chemotherapy in general and under the influence of anti-angiogenic agents in specific. Formation of new Blood vessel is called as angiogenesis. It is known that if we could arrest the blood supply of tumor, it may either die or will may not grow beyond a size of 1-2 mm. We have demonstrated that the major cause of the drug resistance towards anti-angiogenic agents is the activation of compensatory angogenic pathways. We are using in silico approach for

validating the mechanism of action of Flavonoids towards inhibition of cancer cell growth in general and angiogenesis in perticular. In the current state of the art, we are interested to identify biomolecules from natural sources, which will combat the emerging drug resistance.

13 projects for final recommendation (at evaluation stage). The basis of assigning team

leader is the in-depth evaluation of the projects.
